In March, the first organizing meeting was held for a brand-new West Seattle neighborhood association, the Genesee-Schmitz Neighborhood Council (WSB coverage here). Now organizers have scheduled the first official, general meeting and want to make sure people who live in the area know it’s coming up, one week from tomorrow! The first general meeting of the new Genesee-Schmitz Neighborhood Council (GSNC) will be held June 10 at 7PM. The neighborhood will gather at Westside Presbyterian Church, Howell Auditorium at 3601 California Avenue.

This first general meeting will officially establish the Genesee-Schmitz Neighborhood Council with ratification of the boundaries and bylaws recommended by the organizing committee and election of officers. Neighbors will be asked to share their issues and help set priorities for the GSNC efforts. Information will be presented and discussion held in regard to “what’s next” for Genesee Hill school property. City officials will give background and listen to local input about the school property, crime prevention, and emergency preparedness.

“It has been wonderful to see neighbors working together, volunteering time and contributing their varied talents to establish the new GSNC council. This first meeting will provide both important information from city officials and set the foundation we need to have a stronger, united voice within Seattle City government,” said Dick Miller, Acting President of the Genesee-Schmitz Neighborhood Council.

GSNC joins a large network of neighborhood councils that are an integral part of Seattle City governing. Establishment of the GSNC allows the voices of the residents to better represent the issues and needs of those living in the Genesee-Schmitz area.

The organizing committee was established on March 17th. Since then, the volunteers have developed a set of bylaws and boundaries for approval in cooperation with adjacent neighborhood councils and the Southwest District Council. They have been researching viable options for the vacant Genesee school property.
