Cross-peninsula rivals, the rematch: Chief Sealth vs. West Seattle

Scores now, video and details to be added to this story later: In high-school varsity basketball at Chief Sealth High School tonight, both Sealth teams beat West Seattle High School – girls CSHS 40, WSHS 31; boys (just completed) CSHS 50, WSHS 39.

(Added 12:36 am Saturday, the details) GIRLS’ VARSITY: Chief Sealth’s Lady Seahawks combined a near perfect night of free throw shooting and a big defensive outing to beat West Seattle 40-31. The game was largely decided in the third quarter when Sealth managed to keep the Wildcats from moving the ball upcourt. Between effective rebounding and sharp passes, the Lady Wildcats found themselves spending most of their evening under Sealth’s basket. At times, both teams tried to shoot the ball from the perimeter, but neither had any success.

High scorer of the night for Sealth was Natalie Mackey with 11 points, five of which came as free throws. Close behind her was Victoria Elleby with 10. For West Seattle, Anna Hobby led with nine points, followed by Brianne Goulet with eight.

BOYS’ VARSITY: The boys’ game was all about Sealth senior Tomas Ogbaslassie‘s 26 points on the night which gave the Seahawks a 50-39 win. Very early in the night West Seattle was quickly up on Sealth by eight points, but after a quick timeout called by Sealth to cool things down, the Seahawks came back to be up by 10 points at the half. Part of the first quarter and part of the second saw West Seattle shut out due to Ogbaslassie’s shooting and Daniel Davis’s ability to routinely pull down rebounds.

At the start of the second half, West Seattle climbed back into the game off of four successive three-point shots. But as the third quarter progressed, Sealth began to control the pace of the game and forced West Seattle to take the ball inside.

After Ogbaslassie’s 26 points the next highest Sealth player was Korwin Flowers with eight points. For West Seattle, Joe Bell Austin had 12 points, with nine of those coming as three-point shots and Sonny Mensur with 10.
