West Seattle Crime Watch: St. John’s luminarias vandalized

West Seattle’s St. John the Baptist Church has just sent in a Crime Watch report, hoping you might know who damaged its luminarias, which were meant to light the way from Christmas to New Year’s. From St. John’s rector, Rev. Peter DeVeau:

We were saddened to discover that our Christmas luminarias had been vandalized between 1-6 p.m. on Sunday, December 27, 2009. All but one light bulb were removed and several light bulbs had been smashed on the walkway outside the main entrance to the church. A couple of the luminarias had also been damaged.

The luminaria display was put in place to brighten the entrance to the church during the twelve days of Christmas through the Epiphany on January 6, and would be a beacon of light for the Emerald City Wanderers’ New Year’s Eve & New Year’s Day walks which begin and end at the church. The display is especially meaningful to many members in the congregation, as it surrounds the Churchyard where many loved ones are buried.

How sad. This is the season to be joyous and someone has to do something mean and destroy property on a church. If it doesn’t belong to you leave it alone is what I was I learned.

Bored kids fed mainly violence and destruction through mainstream media, computer games and gung-ho cinema. The resulting weakening of community values (and experience) means vandalism against core values. All very sad. 8-(

Speaking for the greater community, we all condemn the fools that did this malicious and ignorant act. If any good is to come of this, it’s to drive awareness of this (and other) church’s efforts to bring beauty, reflection and peace to our community during the holidays and on. Thanks WSB and St John’s for illuminating these efforts, as the efforts stand taller than the vandal’s acts. I’ll do what I can to pay it forward as you’ve inspired me.

Shame, shame, shame on you punks. If you’re reading these posts, look up the word “karma”. The results that you will receive because of your actions, will come back to you, with much worse actions. Change your behavior before you continue to live your life full of hell. Do good things in life instead of tearing apart things, you’ll have more fun…….
