Reminder: Many Seattle Public Schools students off all next week

The arrival of the latest School Beat e-newsletter from Seattle Public Schools provides another reminder: This year for the first time, all elementary and K-8 schools in the district are closed for the entire Thanksgiving week — parent/teacher conferences Monday-Wednesday, holiday break Thursday-Friday. In School Beat, the district says, “The new schedule will be less disruptive to student learning while also providing greater consistency and predictability for families.”

I think this is a great idea. It gives many families a chance to travel, and visit family across the country, without their children having to miss any school. There is just one major flaw. If your family has a middle/high schooler, that child is expected to be at school, while their younger sibling gets the week off. Why not just let all off the students in the district off for the week? Just wondering.

My elementary school daughter and I love it! We’ll do holiday crafts, bake, prep the house for the onslaught of relatives at Thanksgiving…it’s gonna be great. Those half days made no sense to us, but this is fantastic. :-)

Sorry, comment time is over.
