Comcast digital/HD changes in West Seattle, starting today

Three months ago, Comcast‘s Shauna Causey (a West Seattleite) sent word of upgrades on the way – here’s the story we published then. She just e-mailed word that they’re taking effect starting today – “In West Seattle: Comcast is converting channels 30 and above to a digital format today. We’re launching the HD channels in West Seattle on Nov. 24.” It’s part of what Comcast calls “The World of More,” explained here.

They sent us the digital boxes to hook up to our tv sets for the conversion and it’s a real pain to get it to work. I tried several times and failed. I’m still not hooked up.

I guess this means I’ll be losing my ‘free’ cable comcast forgot to disconnect when the last renter left…

  • Diane October 27, 2009 (12:21 pm)

my anger/frustration with comcast cable is off the charts; it took me nearly a year to get them to get my reception working properly and to fix many overcharges/incorrect billings
    ~
and now; if it were not for westseattleblog, I wouldn’t have even known these channels 30+ are blocked as of today without their now required hd box
    ~
comcast sure has no problem sending me an email every month to let me know it’s time to pay my bill, but I received no notice that today is the day that channels 30+ are now converted to hd only; and btw, I see absolutely no value in hd
    ~
thank you westseattleblog; no thanks comcast

  • Squareeyes October 27, 2009 (12:24 pm)

I’ve had the box for two months, guess I’d better attempt to hook it up. Good thing there’s nothing to watch (or TiVo) on Tuesdays.

  • Fiwa Jcbbb October 27, 2009 (12:25 pm)

Which,…, is probably why Comcast hasn’t been going after cable pirates such as yourself and …ahem…others who have slipped through the cracks. They’ll no doubt be picking up a few more customers, but considering the number of watchable channels (do they really expect us to PAY for wacko right wing religious channels, home shopping channels..3 of each…and stuff that is actively ruining our nation like Faux News?) and the ever-increasing number of commercials…often commercial breaks are longer than the segments of programming between them… I’ll be getting an antenna and Netflix.

  • kittylove October 27, 2009 (12:26 pm)

i think this is actually their way to weed out people with “free” cable.

  • Celeste17 October 27, 2009 (12:56 pm)

I called and had them walk me through hooking up the boxes. Ended up having to have them come out and fix one thing. But now I am good to go.

  • Slider October 27, 2009 (1:30 pm)

Direct TV is much cheaper (especially if you bundle with Qwest), I’m saving $30 a month with over 300 channels vs.Comcasts 99 channels. I’ve had no problems since I switched from Comcast in March.

  • mark October 27, 2009 (1:38 pm)

I LOATHE Comcast. It is possible to “dicker” with them on price. Call them up, tell them you wish to discontinue service. They ask why, tell them you are going with DirectTV or DishNework because they gave you a better deal. Their first response is you need to sign a 1 year or 2 year contract to get that pricing. Tell them no problem, you will sign back with Comcast if they will give you the same deal. At that point they transfer you to an agent who’s job it is to keep you are a customer. They drop the price right away. They only do it for 6 months, but its easy enough and I save about $45 a month and I only have high speed internet and the HD Digital package.

  • bsmomma October 27, 2009 (1:40 pm)

We have the fancy digital converter thing….. the reception in the upstairs front bedroom is a hit or miss….. just like cell phone reception. Maybe if we put the TV in the Alley right about where our cell phone works, we’d be good to go!

  • Diane October 27, 2009 (2:04 pm)

hey Slider; good to hear about Direct TV
    ~
how much is the monthly rate for your service?

  • Sue October 27, 2009 (2:08 pm)

I also received no notice from comcast about these changes. I have the $12.50 a month cable with no converter box. Very few of my channels are above 30, but I am assuming I no longer have access to them. Nice of them to let me know I need a box.

  • Michael October 27, 2009 (2:42 pm)

@Diane: I dislike Comcast’s monopoly as much as the next guy, but they HEAVILY flyered their users (to the point of junk mail, I thought) with offers to bring you a FREE digital box if you need one. Use the link WSB provided.
    .
This is NOT a conversion to HD. You won’t get HD if you weren’t signed up for it already. And if you have an HD box this update will simply add more channels, with no work required of you. If you don’t have an HD package but have a digital box (digital is NOT HD) again, you don’t need to do anything.
    .
Use the link WSB provided. The box (if needed) is free.
    .
Sometimes I think people just want an excuse to vent.

  • Michael October 27, 2009 (2:44 pm)

@Sue, if you have limited basic cable these changes are irrelevant to you.

  • Greg October 27, 2009 (2:49 pm)

No cable here, small indoor antenna all the way. I canceled Comcast TV (kept the internet) about 3 months ago and have not looked back.

I bought a $20 antenna that I put on top of my TV. In West Seattle I get about 20 channels, many of which are HD, and they are all clearer and better looking then I ever got from comcast since the TV stations don’t compress the signals like Comcast does.

I still use my TiVo, everything else I get with Netflix.

    Life is good.

  • Sue October 27, 2009 (2:50 pm)

I just spoke with someone at Comcast, and they told me that at my level of service (uber basic) that this is not affected and I will not need a box for those very upper channels (weather channel, CBC, etc.). We’ll see if that’s true when I get home…
(Michael – didn’t see your reply before I called them to check)

  • chas redmond October 27, 2009 (3:41 pm)

and, for those who do have the digital box but haven’t used it before – it does have one advantage for you and Comcast – it can be seen from the other end, which means in the event of a failure they – Comcast tech – can verify whether it’s your box, your line or the whole neighborhood – this has led to a few speedier recoveries after recent power outages. Bitch all you want, digital set boxes are smart boxes and have talk-forward and talk-back – and, yes, they know what you’re watching.

  • mark October 27, 2009 (3:44 pm)

    Greg,

I have thought about doing the same. Between Hulu and the ability to stream so many channels you can almost get the same stuff for free. I have even heard you can pretty much download any premium channel content for free if you have the skills, but I would never do that.

  • Shauna Causey October 27, 2009 (3:58 pm)

    Hi. Shauna here.

If you have channels 30 and above on any TV without a box and you have Comcast service, you get two free DTAs and one advanced set top box for free as part of the World of More project. For more info, this is a great place to go: http://www.comcast.com/digitalnow.

If you have any questions, please call us. We’d like to help: 1-800-COMCAST.

A lot of customers have been asking for more HD channels and this project allows the launch of new HD channels next month.

MSW, we’d like to help you with your box if you are having any problems at all. Feel free to call us. Thanks!

  • Born To Be Mild October 27, 2009 (4:14 pm)

Comcast service sucks. It took 3 service calls to determine that I had to exchange a cable box by driving to 93rd and Aurora. So I finally get my cable service fixed and the digital conversion means that I have to install new boxes that add to the complexity of the system. I don’t mind paying for the service, I really resent the amount of time that I need to spend maintaining Comcast’s equipment.

  • Slider October 27, 2009 (4:15 pm)

@Diane I pay $48 per month for Direct TV, but I bundle with Qwest and get just about every service they offer i.e. internet, cell & home phone. I know some people don’t like Qwest, but they’ve always been really good to me.

  • Fred October 27, 2009 (4:23 pm)

Good luck exiting your Direct TV service. I tried for 8 wks but endless phone menu trees never led to a human. I finally sent a certified letter telling them to stop billing me. Still had a satellite dish on my roof years later until roofers did me a favor. Did I tell you the heavy rains of Seattle make viewing impossible during those times? I like Comcast fine, could be cheaper, internet speed seems to be about 1/3 the speed it was. Its always something…those new boxes took about 2 hours of undivided attention to install, but they seem to work and reception digital clear today.

  • Karl October 27, 2009 (5:11 pm)

We got the two free DTA boxes and I think the whole thing sucks. Yes, we can still view our channels above 30, but where are all the digital/HD channels. I could watch the local HD digital channels before the switch (i.e. 4.1, 5.1, 7.1 etc) now we don’t get any of those. Everything is 4:3 with pillar box and the audio is much quieter than before.

I think they have done a terrible job with this “transition”. They said the change to digital was coming, but didn’t spell out what it really would entail. So many went and bought digital TVs only to be told they’ll need a box, but don’t worry, it’s free! That box puts out an analog signal, not making the host of your digital TV. To do that you’ll need the BIG HD BOX. Great for them, because they want you to have access to ON DEMAND so you can rack up a bigger bill and give Comcast more $$$.

  • Michael October 27, 2009 (5:40 pm)

@Karl, if you specifically had HD service with Comcast you need tech support.
    .
    So much confusion about digital.
    .
    – “Digital” means any channel that uses digital compression to encode the signal. It can be HDTV, but it is usually NOT HDTV. A plain old analog camera signal can be compressed and sent digitally – and often is.
    – Over-the-air WAS analog but recently changed to digital. This has nothing to do with the Comcast change.
    – BUT “digital” in this case means the cable company itself sending your signal digitally. This enables them to “fit” more bandwidth down the line. That’s why they’re making this change – to add the extra HD channels (for HD subscribers).
    – All channels for anyone with a cable box (the kind with the “on screen guide”) have been digital for years.
    – Channels for anyone plugging the coaxial cable directly from the wall to the TV are not digital (unless you have a set with the equivalent of a built-in box – rare).
    .
    – Finally: HD is digital, but digital is NOT HD!

  • SH October 27, 2009 (6:05 pm)

I’ve been a Comcast customer for two years now and I’m a little p.o.’ed that I have to pay two or three times as much for service as people who haven’t been paying customers. Could you imagine going to Talarico’s for pizza every day for two years and paying the full price only to have some new person saunter in and be offered the same thing for half? You’d probably go somewhere else! Hmmm, wait, you can’t really go anywhere else for cable. The last couple times I’ve called Comcast to see if I could get a break like all the new people, they were incredibly rude to me. I think it’s time to look at satellite.

  • Scott October 27, 2009 (6:16 pm)

I’ll be calling Dish… bye Comworst.

  • GenHillOne October 27, 2009 (6:53 pm)

I’d like to know when someone is going to offer an aftermarket DTA box. NOT the HD boxes you can get on the internet that work with an antenna, but the “second” box we now need to get cable channels above 30 that we pay for. Yes, you get 2 free, but we have 4 TVs (we’re not tv junkies necessarily, but it’s too long to explain). Comcast wants us to pay $4/mo. indefinitely (we’re told we can’t buy them) for the boxes we need on the 2 other tvs. What a racket. They don’t seem to want us as longterm customers at all.

  • Lou October 27, 2009 (7:09 pm)

BTW, comcast had advertised this change daily in September (since I recall the actual changeover date being in late September) as a scrolling ad on the now digital tv stations (eg, espn).

Any good solution for that kitchen tv where a box is completely inconvenient? I spend my time in there cooking and watching football on espn. Any under the counter TVs with a digital tuner that would work?

  • Lou October 27, 2009 (7:20 pm)

Nevermind…looks like I answered my own question. Comcast referred to Tru2way: http://www.ctam.com/html/tru2way/default.htm

    ARghh…guess I need a few boxes…maybe it’s time to get tivo.

  • Donn October 27, 2009 (8:13 pm)

Comcast has really poor service. They are still trying to bill me for equipment and service after I cancelled my contract and returned my equipment over 2 years ago. All I get from them when I talk to them is that “we’ll look into that” and never get a resolution.

  • H October 27, 2009 (8:23 pm)

Just hooked up the digital boxes to 2 HDTVs and discovered a big drawback that was not advertised by Comcast.

Both of these HDTVs have built-in tuners, and we have the expanded cable (i.e. channels 2-99). But we’d always gotten the local HD channels also (i.e. channels 4.1, 5.1, 9.1-9.4, etc). After activating the new boxes and talking to Comcast, they say that we can’t get those local HD channels anymore when using these boxes. We have 2 options to get back the HD channels we were watching before: 1) pay Comcast and upgrade to a HD package 2) get splitters and run two cables to each of the HDTVs, one direct coax from the wall, the other from the new boxes. When we want to watch local HD, change over to the direct coax, otherwise watch from the new boxes.

Pain in the butt. I don’t mind paying for the HD package and getting channels like HD Theater etc, I do that at my other place along with DVR. But it sure would’ve been nice if Comcast had given us a little bit more information about the capabilities (or lack thereof) in these new boxes before we got them. They make no mention whatsoever about how this upgrade affects those with HDTVs.

  • susan October 27, 2009 (8:54 pm)

I guess I ignored all the mailings, too, so will need to decide what’s next for my tv viewing. Did anyone else have the experience, that when signal went from analog to digital, that Ch.
9 and Ch. 11 got fuzzy? A question about Tivo; do you still have to have cable, in order to watch, and record shows?

  • East Coaster October 27, 2009 (8:55 pm)

What about those of us who have our flat panel LCD HDTV mounted on a wall? Where is the cable box suppose to go?

I was told I can use a cablecard and that will solve the issue but not sure if that is free or not. I’m going to have to waste my time to go to comcast in north seattle to figure this out.

Welcome to the world of more……(more headaches, more time wasted, more money out of my pocket)

  • Todd October 27, 2009 (9:10 pm)

I feel that every year or so Comcast announces great additions to the current line up but then a few months later, your bill goes up. Just seems kind of shady..

  • Mookie October 27, 2009 (9:31 pm)

I have expanded basic digital cable, and a Tivo, and a couple months ago Comcast fellow came out and installed the digital converter box. (Incorrectly. Friend had to come over and straighten it all out.)

Worked fine til tonight, now can’t see channels above 30. Hoping that changing some settings in Tivo will help, but basically thrashing around in the dark here. Or should I change all the channels in the Tivo setting to “box” now?

    Sigh.

  • ann October 27, 2009 (9:42 pm)

I found channels, 30 and above, up in the 80’s and above. I think most of them are there without these boxes. For instance, cnn ch 44 is now 116-7. Also if you hook up the boxes you can’t record one channel and watch another without getting a dvd player from comcast!

  • Diane October 27, 2009 (9:51 pm)

that’s another part I hate; I have their main box on my #1 tv, and yeh, always feel like big brother is watching

  • Lou October 27, 2009 (10:13 pm)

The tivo hd with a cable card should work. I would assume TVs that utilize a cable card would work as well. I’d suggest contacting comcast but the advice would totally be dependent on the quality of the customer service rep helping you.

I suspect for my under the counter kitchen tv, I’ll request the free converter (is it small at least). For the bedroom, I’ll request an HD box. Oh joy, more money to spend.

  • Chris October 28, 2009 (12:02 am)

There’s a complaint form for the city here:
    .
    http://www.seattle.gov/cable/comments.htm
    .
    .
I put together a PDF of Comcast’s digital (and analog) lineup a month or so ago, when they first turned on the new digital tier. I haven’t confirmed all the channels today, but it’s a start:
    .
    http://www.mischiefblog.com/uploads/comcast.pdf
    .
Ignore the analog channels unless you have a DTA installed. For the digital channels, you’ll need a Digital QAM receiver (most HDTVs have them, including many lower end LCD models) and you’ll need to be directly connected to the coaxial cable to receive digital channels: no DTA. This is what I’m doing for my wife so we don’t have an extra remote control or clunky box on the wall-mounted TV.

  • East Coaster October 28, 2009 (12:29 am)

@Chris – thank you for the PDF of the digital lineup. Some of the channels are switched but it’s an awesome start and will make life ALOT easier.

  • oddreality October 28, 2009 (1:53 am)

Do any of you with expanded basic get channel 4’s 11AM news on channel 114 where they moved it when they put yet another doctor show on their day time line up? We cannot get channel 114. I really HATE Comcast now and I did not feel that way till the digital change over.
We are thinking of dropping them and using a box of our own and getting an antenna…We’ll miss Comedy Central,TLC, Discovery and MSNBC though. Not sure what to do. I have monopolies more than I hate Comcast. No choices.

  • Jose October 28, 2009 (2:19 am)

I’ve had DirecTV for years and never had an outage – NEVER. If you experience outages, call.
DirecTV is the only way to go for me.

  • brown October 28, 2009 (4:21 am)

I have THE solution. Kill your TV. Or at the very least, don’t buy anything other than the tv and an antanae.

  • Blasty October 28, 2009 (2:23 pm)

Wow, a lot of whiners here. I thank god for Comcast, after having Broadstripe (formerly Milennium) in the CD before I moved to West Seattle. Talk about a joke of an operation, comcast is tops in comparison.

  • Eric October 28, 2009 (2:44 pm)

I get the uber-basic level of service and am still receiving channels 99 (CBC) and 78 (Weather Channel). These are most important channels higher than 30 that I want, so I am still happy w/out a converter.

  • Ashley October 28, 2009 (3:15 pm)

@Blasty – looks like you’re whining about Broadstripe.

We’re not whining – we’re not happy with what comcast is dishing out which we have every right to not be happy about. If you’re happy being a doormat, then that’s your choice.

  • c.c October 28, 2009 (3:39 pm)

ever since comcast started with this “free” upgrade talk we knew there would be problems and costs involved ( if you have more than two t.v’s.) Not to mention that comcast has raised their cost to the customer by about five dollars a year. We started out at about 30 dollars a month 5-7 years ago and now are at 65 dollars a month for basic expanded cable. As far as I know we have not gotten anything more from them, just things taken away. I have heard rumors that comcast has gotten in some types of trouble in other states? I just want to say thanks comcast for giving us all the excuses we need to go to direct tv-we won’t miss you at all. I also have to wonder how many customers you have and will lose when all is said and done!

  • flowerpetal October 28, 2009 (3:42 pm)

I had been a defender of Comcast… until yesterday. That’s when we no longer got channels 30 and above. We have the basic plan and were told in June when we signed up that these were part of the plan. I even have a reference # from Comcast and that June conversation. Now they tell me that I should never have had those channels and that it was a mistake. Mistake on the sales person’s part? I ask. Mistake on the installer’s part? I ask.
I am not a fan of t.v. but my partner has been home for much of the year recovering from cancer treatment and the t.v. (for better or worse) has been a companion.
It makes me spitting mad that I was lied to last June when we switched our phone to Comcast, got the t.v. cable plan… and continued with our computer cable which we have had for nine years.
I’m at a loss at what to do now. We did look at the DirectTV flyer in the newspaper this morning. Timing is everything!

  • mar3c October 29, 2009 (6:27 am)

yeah, we all lost a big game of chicken with comcast. did the conversion; it was easy. that’s not my gripe. but let me pile on anyway…
    .
the two-way medium is disturbing; having to fill out an online form to prevent them from selling what i watch to third parties for marketing purposes was even creepier.
    .
ever notice how much advertising comcast does in a market where a lot of us can’t get dishes easily anyway? billboard, radio, television, fliers, internet ads. how much are our bills affected by their multi-million-dollar ad campaign – to a captive (or hostage) audience?
    .
oh, and to those of you with “fuzzy” channels, that’s usually signal loss from inferior coax cable, shoddy connectors, or loose connections. make sure those connectors are screwed down before calling tech support in india…
    .
i got tired of looking at the whiskey tango coax on the exterior, so i ripped comcasts’s crap off of the outside of my house and ran it through the attic. the installer had to have wasted a good 200 feet of coax, and it completely circumnavigated the house. it went to outside walls, where i can’t or don’t want to put teevees. so i started making my own cable. it’s easy, i did a pro job, the house looks better, and no more signal loss.
    .
    just my $.02.

  • Halloween Spirit October 29, 2009 (11:13 am)

oddreality, yes we get channel 114 on the new cable boxes with expanded basic service.

Is anyone in WS able to get the “On Demand” programs?

  • austin68 October 29, 2009 (5:45 pm)

Can you beleive that compost can keep charging and charging …..time for a dish, why not, the gougers at compost need a sharp stick in their pie hole

  • austin68 October 29, 2009 (5:50 pm)

  • MA October 29, 2009 (8:44 pm)

26 years ago my future-husband moved into his (now our) house and plugged a cable dangling from the ceiling to his 20″ tv and voila! all the basic channels. The service would go out every once and a while but we would just wait and it would eventually come back. Now, after 26 years of “blessings” and and going through a couple of small televisions we’re suddenly plunged into what sounds like the cesspool of the satellite/cable company world. Believe me, I’m not complaining, we we’re lucky and always on borrowed time. We never gave a hoot about picture quality, only the quality of a programs we watched. End of an era -now which hell to pick?

  • tjd4229 October 31, 2009 (1:55 pm)

Spent two hours today installing three of the new DTA boxes. Two needed for digital TVs connected directly to cable and one to handle the Picture-in-Picture tuner on my LCD projection big screen. First of all, I now have to rent one DTA box for service that was included in the small fortune I was paying before. Second, I had a similar experience to one above with volume being too low. Third, just what I needed; one more remote control that only controls on/off, volume and channels. Have to keep the original remote for anything else. What will Comcast come up with next?

  • Byron November 4, 2009 (9:27 am)

You can find most of those channels without the DTA box, if you have a TV with a built-in digital tuner — ASTM. What comcast isn’t telling you is you can get the local HD channels without the DTA box, when you plug it in, you lose them and also get a degraded picture.

  • George November 4, 2009 (11:01 pm)

Byron’s comment that a HD TV can tune the missing channels 30-70 on other sites is correct. Thanks to Chris for putting together a list of available channels for expanded basic.
    http://www.mischiefblog.com/uploads/comcast.pdf

On examining my last bill it appears that analogue sets can tune 1-30 which covers what we watch on our analogue sets. It appears that nothing needs to be done immediately with an HDTV

It will be interested to find out how long the present list of channels lasts.

    George

  • haha November 6, 2009 (6:13 am)

It’s amazing to see all the people complaining over things Comcast has been advertising for months! Channels 30+ that aren’t viewable without a digital converter has been advertised on TV for more than 6 months. I love how everyone procrastinates till the very last minute until they do something. Then blame it on Comcast. What idiots some customers are…

Oh, and you can get HD channels without the converter box. They are local over the air channels, which, Comcast has no control over. So, your 4-1, 5-1, 6-1, etc. are HD channels. So once you put the box on you will lose those channels. Don’t blame it on Comcast because they have nothing to do with those signals

  • Randall November 9, 2009 (10:55 am)

It’s hard to know what to do. Seems like a LOT of people have problems with Comcast service and products, but I don’t know of a better option without going to satellite. Unfortunately, satellite doesn’t seem like it would work in my new place (new to West Seattle as of Friday). There would be no clear shot to the southern sky from the yard and we cannot attach to the building.

I already miss my satellite and can’t believe how much more Comcast costs for less programming than what I had with Dish Network.

    Bah!

  • SkritchD November 9, 2009 (9:06 pm)

We ordered our DTA at 6:15 PM tonight, picked it up from Comcast at 6:45 PM at zero cost, came home and had it installed and activated 20 minutes later. Another remote, ugh, but setup was not difficult at all. There was no wait on activating the DTA. An automated voice asked 4 or 5 questions. I was not prompted to provide the ID of the DTA. Not difficult at all. Previously our second TV received channels 2-99, now we get a bunch more in the 100’s, plus the music channels. I am pleased about that.

  • East Coaster November 20, 2009 (4:09 pm)

OK – NOW there’s no signal above channel 100. WTF!!!!!!

  • bl@ster November 21, 2009 (11:09 pm)

So are these new HD channels still coming on Tuesday?

  • WSB November 22, 2009 (12:08 am)

    Checking.

Wow, thanks. “Working for you” is the KOMO tagline but I think it’s more fitting for WSB.

  • WSB November 22, 2009 (1:23 am)

Former employer :) (10 years gone now) Anyway, Shauna from Comcast tells me via Twitter, yes. She will either comment here or else I’ll get a little info and create a separate item, since Tuesday’s so close – TR

Great news! Finally I get to watch Olbermann and Maddow in glorious HD. Thanks.

  • Karl November 23, 2009 (11:43 am)

    @ haha
“It’s amazing to see all the people complaining over things Comcast has been advertising for months! Channels 30+ that aren’t viewable without a digital converter has been advertised on TV for more than 6 months. I love how everyone procrastinates till the very last minute until they do something. Then blame it on Comcast. What idiots some customers are…”

We got the dumb little boxes in plenty of time. The thing is, if you have a TV with a HD tuner, YOU CAN STILL GET THOSE CHANNELS! They’re there but you have to do some surfing to find out what channel is where because Comcast has given no channel listing to help you out. They know damn well what all they’re sending down their lines, but they seem to want us all hooked up to those crummy DTA boxes. Why is that? It’s a two way box so they can know what you’ve been watching and sell that info to advertisers. That is lame.

We called and asked them prior to the change if we’d still get our expanded basic channels with our digital HDTV and were told no, you need the DTA box. Were we misinformed? In a big way! They suck badly.

  • Ashley November 23, 2009 (4:00 pm)

    @Karl,

I have an HDTV with built in tuner and all the previous “new” channels from 100 on up are now no longer available so I don’t have channels like E! or TLC, etc. Do you have any idea where those channels went to?

Comcast is awful. I can’t believe the city/state allows this monopoly to occur.

  • Jeffrey November 23, 2009 (4:59 pm)

    @#$%#$&%$!!!

I had the same fight with Comcast after they changed to a new and improved digital signal–basically it meant that I had to get converter boxes for all four tvs, and still my Tivos didn’t work. They are all paid for, and I can’t use them!

I have paid Comcast $180/mo for the past ten years for tv and cable–last week I finally gave up and changed to Direct TV. I now have over 200 channels, great reception, and lowered my bill by $100/mo.

Comcast sucks. I still have their internet which they hosed me on by increasing my bill to 60/mo since I am not bundled…but with the Direct TV and my internet bill from Comcast it’s still about a hundred dollars less a month. I didn’t want to have to change my email address…that’s why I kept Comcast for email. The worst part was that when I called to cancel my cable TV the phone rep was actually mad at me for not calling him sooner! He said I hadn’t had a visit by a technician for over a year, yet there was one in my home just two weeks ago. Ugh!

  • Russ November 23, 2009 (7:03 pm)

@haha- The point being, those with HD Tuners should not be forced to use a converter box. Only people with an analog tuner should need a converter box. Comcast is manipulating us. I’m in a condo, so cannot switch to Direct TV, otherwise, I would.

  • Russ November 23, 2009 (7:04 pm)

They want a box on every TV to sell On Demand or Pay Per View content, and to prevent us from recording without renting their DVR (which won’t record or transfer shows to an external device.

  • Karl November 26, 2009 (9:40 am)

    @Ashley

I don’t think these are the “new” digital channels per se. They are expanded basic service. They are analog source/content that is converted to digital before being sent through the cable system. Yes you need a digital QAM tuner in your tv to receive those signals. They will appear on your digital tv in a 3:4 format. In other words, you’ll have the black pillar boxing on the sides of the screen. Does that make sense?

    I found E! on 83.2
    Comedy Central on 84.9
    History on 91.5
    MSNBC on 35.1

I just started surfing around and made my own list since Comcast isn’t providing one. I’d never considered getting a dish system before, but we are so frustrated with Comcast over this that we are exploring that option. If/when there is a better internet option we will drop them all together.

  • Karl November 26, 2009 (9:48 am)

    @ Ashley

I forgot to mention that (after unplugging the DTA box and plugging the cable line directly into my HDTV) I ran the tv through it’s auto channel find in the set up menu. It takes a while for it to go through and find all of the channels (about 5 min), but it worked for me.

    Good luck!

  • Karl November 26, 2009 (10:02 am)

    @ Russ

    You are very correct!

Years ago I worked for TCI/AT&T when they first launched digital cable with On Demand. They wanted us to get as many of those boxes in each house as we could so people would have those remotes in-hand and start racking up movie order$.

Years ago they also talked about someday providing a la carte service. That idea was ditched b/c they wouldn’t be able to make money off of the many crappy channels that no one would subscribe to. They bundle them in with channels people DO want and charge you more.

  • Ashley November 28, 2009 (10:53 pm)

    @Karl

Thanks for the info! I’m with you on dropping comcast but still need internet (and don’t have land line) so I’m forced to keep them for now until something better comes along.

  • Karl November 30, 2009 (10:02 am)

Thanks Wes! That’s most of them. There’s some other ones in there that I’d found by surfing, but that list has most of them. Now I don’t have to waste time making one in Excel.

So, can someone explain why Comcast hasn’t released such a channel list?

  • stacy December 1, 2009 (11:37 pm)

Does anyone else have a Tivo Series 2 that you’re able to use with the “new and improved” Comcast digital channels? My Tivo hasn’t been able to change channels since the Comcast “upgrade”.
    thanks!

  • Ashley December 11, 2009 (11:34 pm)

UNBELIEVABLE!!!! Now they’ve scrambled everything so you HAVE to get their special equipment! Has anyone been able to find the other channels????

  • WesCAddle December 13, 2009 (11:37 am)

The free ride is over. You are right Ashley, Comcast is now scrambling their QAM digital channels.

    Just because they can.

  • Ashley December 13, 2009 (1:39 pm)

There isn’t a strong enough word in the English language to describe how I feel about Comcast. The other options (satellite) aren’t much better since you still need a box. Where am I suppose to put a box when my tv is mounted on the wall on top of my fireplace?

  • Karl December 21, 2009 (8:49 am)

    F-ing Bastards.

Can’t wait to see how I’m going mount that POS to my little wall mounted set in the kitchen.

I don’t like the option of the stupid dish either. But we are now seriously exploring that option because I loathe Comcast sooooooooooooooooo much.

  • stef December 21, 2009 (1:01 pm)

Nooooo! has anyone figured out a way around the scrambled channels??

I used to be able to find them the way mentioned above but now they are really gone :(

I also have a wall mounted TV and would love if someone knows away around the latest change

Sorry, comment time is over.
