Update: House fire on 26th SW in North Delridge

(WSB photo by Christopher Boffoli, substituted for earlier camphone photo @ 8:19 pm)
Single-family residence fire call in 4800 block of 26th SW (map). More to come. 7:54 PM UPDATE: WSB contributing photojournalist Christopher Boffoli says it’s suspected the fire started in the kitchen; it’s tapped now, and the family who was home got out OK (as also reported in comments). 8:14 PM UPDATE: Fire investigators at the scene confirm the kitchen is where it started, but they haven’t yet figured out exactly what sparked the fire. They also say the family will not be able to go back into the house tonight.

ADDED 9:27 PM: Christopher’s video:

No official cause announced yet; whenever it is, tonight or tomorrow, we’ll add it here. TUESDAY 12:30 PM: According to Helen Fitzpatrick with Seattle Fire, the cause was food on the stove catching fire accidentally; the flames spread to cabinets and then the attic. Damage = $30,000.

My Mom lives across the street and just called me. She said they can see flames coming from the top of the house. She also mentioned that the family is not in the house and has already moved vehicles away, etc. Sounds like the whole neighborhood is out to watch. Hope they can put it out before too much damage is done!s

Some fire trucks are leaving now. There was a huge response. Firefighters cut a hole in the roof and were spraying water in the hole, and seemed to get the fire out pretty quickly.

A lot of excitement for little old 26th Ave…

Fyi, the house in the street view of the linked map is not the house that was on fire, just so no one gets confused.

Even if we used the specific address in the G-Map, it wouldn’t show the right house anyway, fwiw – I use Street View multiple times a day and it’s usually about half a block off. But thanks.

My comment really wasn’t to correct you or point out that you did anything wrong. My intent was simply to remind people that the house in the picture is not the one that was on fire so that no one mistakenly panicked if they recognized the house. That’s all.

We live 4 houses south of this home on 26th. I saw smoke through our living room window at 7 pm and asked my husband to go check it out. When he got to the house, it was clear that the house was on fire and he immediately called 911 and yelled into the house to see if anyone was home. The neighbor was home alone and came out in a panic, not sure what to do. Thankfully, the fire was still pretty small at that point, so she got out and was able to move her car out of the garage. The fire dept. was here within 5 minutes and got the fire contained quickly. Kudos to them for the fast response. Hopefully, our neighbors can find a place to stay tonight and get back home soon.

It is a really good idea to keep a small fire extinguisher in your kitchen. They don’t cost very much and take up very little space.

Glad nobody was hurt, I hope they had insurance.

Sorry, comment time is over.
