Another SODO traffic alert: 4th Avenue South repaving

From the city’s traffic-alert list for the SODO area (you can sign up for the list from the bottom of this page):

Repaving 4th Ave S between S Royal Brougham Way and Airport Way S begins tonight, Monday, June 29, and will continue through the end of July. In order to minimize traffic interruptions, most work will occur during the evening hours between 6 p.m. and 7:00 a.m.

does this mean they are done with 1st ave? or are both going to be a mess now?

  • WSB June 29, 2009 (1:53 pm)

No, 1st Ave is scheduled to continue into August, per this city update page:

Good timing by SDOT…make all of the major roads through Sodo difficult to get through during baseball season!

  • Robert June 29, 2009 (2:39 pm)

Given that baseball season is smack dab in the middle of construction season, not sure if there is much of a workaround. At least when done 1st and 4th will be smooth as silk…for about 2 weeks. :-)

the section of 1st that’s “done” is graded all wonky. It’s definitely NOT flat – more like wobbly. I’m hoping they’re not thinking it’s finished…

Can you just shoot me? Seriously can the city think about how this effects people who work in the SODO district. Overlapping the paving of 1st and 4th Ave s is just dumb. And yes, as Robert said, it is even dumber to be doing it during Baeball season which then flows right into football season. Nice work SDOT!

SDOT is an unenviable position – we’ll complain if they don’t build transportation improvements and we’ll complain if they do.
    .
I think it makes sense to complete the paving of 1st and 4th, and construction of the Royal Brougham overpass prior to the south end viaduct work slated for spring 2010. That means all have to happen now, and unfortunately concurrently. If they waited for a gap in the sports seasons, they’d be stuck with January and February – which are not particularly good months for paving.
    .
On the plus side, the bike lanes on Alaskan Way just got restriped – adding a clearly marked southbound bike lane for the first time!

I wonder if we will be able to get home from Costco now, it’s been almost impossible lately. I might have to start using Beacon Hill and the good ol’ (new) Lucile Street Bridge.

MMWaaaa hah ahaha! It is all part of Mayor McCheese’s master plan. Make it harder to get around, take away parking and make public transportation look even better. Meanwhile we have a gang war, infrastructure that is falling apart and a drug problem downtown. So lets focus on the Green things shall we?

maybe the gang bangers will switch over to mountain bikes and Segways.

Repaving 4th Ave S between S Royal Brougham Way and Airport Way S begins…

Where does 4th Ave S intersect Airport Way?

  • eigenwijs June 30, 2009 (9:03 am)

So the section of 4th they will work on isn’t parallel to the mess on 1st? That’s good!

    Re: 1st Ave uneven pavement

I’m assuming that once the other side is done, another layer of pavement will be poured over the whole thing.

  • Milo June 30, 2009 (10:14 am)

Wow !!! A month to pave about 3 blocks? Must be a government job.

  • JAT June 30, 2009 (1:23 pm)

Nice kneejerk Rightist reaction Milo! Who other than the government provides roads?…

Having said that, 4th Ave S was mighty unpleasant on my bicycle this morning. I’m looking forward to the new surface – hopefully the contractors will sweep up after themselves.

Sorry, comment time is over.
