West Seattle Weather Watch: Snow now, rain (supposedly) later

(CLICK HERE TO GO TO THE NEW OVERNIGHT COVERAGE POST - THIS ONE IS "CLOSED")

(video added 5:13 pm, shot just after 5 o'clock in Upper Fauntleroy)
ORIGINAL 3:26 PM POST: Multiple reports from various areas of West Seattle (and, via Twitter, elsewhere in the city). Web/radio weather celebrity Cliff Mass explains what it's all about. The official National Weather Service "forecast discussion" posted minutes ago alludes to it too - insists it'll turn to rain by midnight - and warns of a windy night ahead. Keep us updated on what's happening where you are ...

4:55 PM UPDATE: Sticking on the top of the car now. (minutes later) And on the street.

5:26 PM UPDATE: Thanks for sending photos! First one, from Lari at 53rd/Charlestown (map):

And this one from Creighton, taken in The Junction:

We're getting lots of snow reports via Facebook (we're WS Blog) and Twitter (@westseattleblog), too. Some areas say they have almost an inch already!

6:07 PM UPDATE: If you haven't gone outside, do note that - as some have observed already - this is NOT the same snow that fell last month. This is wet, slippery, slushy, and sloppy. But to reiterate, this is what the 3:30 forecast update said - half an hour after this started:

TONIGHT...RAIN OR SNOW THIS EVENING BECOMING ALL RAIN BY MIDNIGHT. BECOMING WINDY. SNOW ACCUMULATION UP TO 1 INCH...EXCEPT UP TO 2 INCHES WEST OF PUGET SOUND. TEMPERATURES RISING INTO THE UPPER 30S TO LOWER 40S. SOUTHWEST WIND RISING TO 20 TO 30 MPH WITH GUSTS TO NEAR 45 MPH.

MONDAY...WINDY. RAIN IN THE MORNING...THEN SHOWERS LIKELY IN THE AFTERNOON. HIGHS IN THE MID TO UPPER 40S. SOUTHWEST WIND 20 TO 30 MPH.

6:25 PM UPDATE: Reminder that if you are wondering about the bridge, the cameras (and others) are all on our WSB Traffic page. From Morgan Junction, Tamsen sent this photo taken within the past half-hour:

Pamela sent this photo captioned "High Point snow" with the note, "We ARE going to school tomorrow - no matter what!"

6:52 PM UPDATE: Scott C has measured more than an inch already (he says the mark is "submerged"):

At least two inches of snow on Pigeon Point, according to Lora from Hotwire Coffee (WSB sponsor) - here's her photographic proof:

Via Twitter, Nathan just reported: "gnarly driving on the west seattle bridge now, about 10 feet of visibility, wind and lots of snow." Here's the latest live image from the camera pointing east on The Bridge (refresh for the latest view):

7:03 PM UPDATE: Guess what! The National Weather Service updated its forecast last hour (which usually isn't done between mid-afternoon and late evening) to add a "Winter Weather Advisory," in effect till 9 pm.

7:20 PM UPDATE: Also rest assured, we're watching the various official sources for any hint of possible changes tomorrow, but given that the forecast continues to insist this will go away, don't expect any decisions to be made before very early morning. We'll be on watch here well into the night, and then again very early. Meantime - besides the Twitter-watching link we shared earlier, you can also see some of the West Seattle snow tweets on the WSB Twitter page (also catching others' tweets that mention WS). And let us know if you see a snowplow/sander - we're still awaiting any official city word of deployment.

7:33 PM UPDATE: Multiple reports of satellite-TV (DirecTV) outage. On a forecast note: Cliff Mass has published an update - he says it will continue snowing till 10 or 11 pm.

7:45 PM UPDATE: From the scanner, all police precincts are "chaining up." Comment from Dan reports a power outage:

Power is out on Sylvan Way between 16th and (it looks like) at least 28th SW. No power at the traffic lights or for the ARCO/Shell stations @Delridge and Sylvan.

City Light power-outage phone line says there are "numerous" storm-related outages citywide - too numerous to list specifically. The City Light website for power outages, meantime, lists nothing. Also NOT reflecting any storm-related trouble, the Metro home page (at least as of now). And another road report via Twitter: "SW Oregon to SW Dawson very slippery uphill btw delridge and 16th SW." Also for the record, just re-timestamped this post to 5:22 pm (it originally was published at 3:26 pm) so it will appear at the top of the home page TFN (we'll open a late-night post in a few hours, but this will keep going till then). Another photo now from Scott C, who says his "neighbors have been busy!"

This snowman photo's from Lisa L, who reports "We built a Shriner snowman!"

Just measured almost 2" of snow at WSB HQ in Upper Fauntleroy.

8:19 PM UPDATE: Two things - First, in comments, Yumpears reports seeing sand trucks on The Bridge, going eastbound:

Just drove home from Children’s Theater in lower Queen Anne. We were in an old toyota camry and made it just fine. Saw two sand truck on the high bridge heading east about 15 minutes ago. The westbound lanes don’t appear to be sanded yet.

Second, since we currently are using the "newest info at the bottom of the post" format to keep it close to the comments, which are full of important information too, we are going to try something new for the people who keep refreshing and then having to scroll down - We are putting a link at the top of the post (right under the headline) that will always take you to the start of the newest thing we've added. Might help a little. It will be in place in a few minutes. But right now, the first city news release of the night:

Facing the first major snowfall of 2009, the Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) is aggressively plowing, de-icing and sanding arterials around the city. The department advises motorists to drive with care as they move around Seattle on Sunday evening. Currently, the main arterials are slushy but passable.

SDOT currently has 16 trucks plowing, sanding and de-icing city streets, with two devoted solely to the West Seattle Bridge and the Alaskan Way Viaduct. Within the next hour there will be 24 trucks total clearing major city roadways. Though rain and rising temperatures are forecasted, the department will work through the night to clear primary and secondary arterials, with an eye on routes for the morning commute.

8:37 PM UPDATE: Photo and bus update from Paul Gould:

Paul says: "Metro 54 bus stuck on Barton at 38th (by water tower) heading uphill. It is one of the articulated buses, apparently with bald tires, as the rear tires have zero traction. The driver has been trying for quite a while and some of the residents had to move their cars out of the way. He has now slid his back wheels into the curb. He may have to wait until it starts raining." No weather updates on Metro home page yet, if you're wondering. We sent County Executive Ron Sims a message via Twitter asking if the Metro web team is heading in to do something about that; no reply - most recent tweet was about a Shoreline blog post re: jail-site fight. (later note: he did reply at 8:52, "We're working on it")

8:55 PM UPDATE: First word of a closure/change for tomorrow morning - Jason at The Bohemian e-mailed this:

Due to the weather, and the possibility of a more severe development... We are closed tomorrow for a.m. service. The Bohemian will be open at 4 pm for Happy Hour and Supper service @ 5 pm.

As many West Seattleites are all too well aware, tomorrow is supposed to be trash and yard-waste pickup day for many neighborhoods - also, recycling catch-up day for many who are still awaiting the delayed Friday (Saturday) pickup - here's what we reported about that earlier today. No word YET of any city changes on that front; we'll of course be on the lookout. For now, trash cans and Christmas trees are gathering a fresh coat of snow:

Second photo is courtesy Jack Loblaw. Inspires us to suggest we may be to blame for First Snow '09 - we took down and put out our tree this afternoon, shortly before the snow began; back on December 13th, the first round of snow started hours after we BOUGHT said tree and brought it home.

9:04 PM UPDATE: Both the county and city have finally started sending out some snow info via Twitter. (You can find the county at @kingcountynews and the city at @sdotsnow - those links take you to the websites that archive the Twitter messages, so you can read them even if you don't have a Twitter account.) Uh oh - our favorite ex-co-worker meteorologist Walter Kelley from Channel 13 (they do a 9 pm newscast on cable channel 10) says up to three MORE inches before the snow stops?! 2 bus tidbits in the past few minutes from that King County Twitter account:

Some of the buses on the road this evening are encountering difficult driving conditions, but none are on snow routing yet ... KC Staff will be working overnight to chain buses if necessary and to drive the bus routes to see where problems await the buses

9:33 PM UPDATE: More info via Twitter. First, from the county (@kingcountynews): "Metro Transit is experiencing some snow-related service disruptions this evening, but there are not many buses on the road at this time." Second, from the City of Tacoma (@CityofTacoma), a note that the snow has changed to rain down there; that's the direction this came from at mid-afternoon, so perhaps there indeed is hope! (Also, the county info has just appeared here in short news-release form.)

9:45 PM UPDATE: New video clip from outside WSB HQ a short time ago - just in case you haven't gone outside in a few hours and are wondering what it looks like up close:

Dunsany e-mails from Highland Park about something that you're likely seeing too - branches heavy with snow, in danger of snapping and breaking power and phone lines, among other potential problems. Illustrated, in fact, by another photo from Hotwire's Lora on Pigeon Point:

10:01 PM UPDATE: First bus-route changes listed here. For WS, 21 "is not operating south of Roxbury."

10:21 PM UPDATE: More than seven hours of snow now; many people are reporting at least five inches on the ground. Definitely enough for snowmen - we showed you a few earlier, and here's another one: Alison and her husband made this one at 44th/Admiral and call your attention in particular to the sign:

Still no word of any school delays for tomorrow; we expect those (if any) to be decided early in the morning, so we'll be updating live starting around 4 am. We'll also be switching to an "overnight snow notes" post sometime after 11 pm.

10:36 PM UPDATE: Power is out here at WSB HQ in Upper Fauntleroy. We have a big supply of batteries plus two forms of wireless Internet backup, so we'll be continuing our coverage. Not sure how far this outage extends; we'll go outside and look down California in a moment.

10:55 PM UPDATE: We’re closing this post – had planned to open a new one right about now for overnight coverage anyway. The new one is focused right now on the power outages but we can and will also report on, and discuss, other snow effects. Click here to go there.

Let me guess. The schools are going to announce now that they are closed tomorrow because of these few flakes. If so, anyone know of a good babysitter?

  • JanS January 4, 2009 (4:00 pm)

Kind of a snowy/rainy yuck falling form the sky in the Admiral District…and really, really dreary looking outside…

Snow is getting right up there with some of the worst four letter words I can think of. I might have to start using it in my road rage buzz words.

  • yoda January 4, 2009 (4:54 pm)

Hope this won’t scare off garbage pick up. sticking on grass and gravel in upper Schmitz Park

  • Scott January 4, 2009 (4:58 pm)

    Ground is all white here.
    Grass, driveway, roof, street.
    Darn global warming!

  • JBL January 4, 2009 (4:58 pm)

Oh great! Another reason the city has NOT to pick up all the trash they were “suppose” to pick up yesterday.

  • lag January 4, 2009 (5:04 pm)

our street in Highland Park is completely white!

  • RobertSeattle January 4, 2009 (5:04 pm)

Slushy rain at Alki. Not really sticking in the Admiral District. Just back from the Met.

  • JH January 4, 2009 (5:09 pm)

I can’t believe I just noticed the snow and it’s already covering everything. Yoda, we must be neighbors!

  • BG39 January 4, 2009 (5:11 pm)

    AARRGH!!

  • Cami January 4, 2009 (5:17 pm)

Okay, since we made it inside at Alki, it’s now sticking to the cars and lawn. No snow on the road or sidewalks. WILL THIS EVER END????

  • Jeff January 4, 2009 (5:19 pm)

All white here in Highland park. Kids were singing “Let it Snow” this morning, I blame them. The just don’t want to go back to school tomorrow, even though they’ve have 3 weeks off.

Here’s to hoping it melts quickly.

  • B'sMomma January 4, 2009 (5:20 pm)

Uuuugghhhh! My car is covered in snow! The grass is white and the street (48th Ave. S.W. off of Waite & Admiral)is white. It seems to be 100% snow….no rain. Please please please make it STOP!!!!!!

  • Stephen January 4, 2009 (5:21 pm)

It’s a blanket of white on 30th just South of Holden (Westwood). Splendid.

  • Traci January 4, 2009 (5:21 pm)

Seriously if SNOW prevents me from going back to work tomorrow I’m going to be so pissed! I’m getting so bored!!

  • GreenSpaces January 4, 2009 (5:24 pm)

All white and snowing in High Point. And yeah I am a snow-hater these days. And so’s my dog.

  • GenHillOne January 4, 2009 (5:26 pm)

Coming down steadily and sticking to everything here. Got home about 15 minutes ago now and my tracks in the street are nearly covered. Really? I’m so hoping the rain comes as predicted.

  • GenHillOne January 4, 2009 (5:27 pm)

p.s. – big pretty stuff makes visibility crap. That white tunnel effect.

  • Sue January 4, 2009 (5:33 pm)

We were having coffee on Alki when it started. I just wanted to scream. I talked myself into the fact that it’s nothing … won’t even stick … total nonevent. So I’m sitting here at home, typing away, not really paying attention, until I just looked up and out onto Fauntleroy, saw all he white and literally started screaming. I am not amused.

  • Gina January 4, 2009 (5:36 pm)

tap heels together 3 times and repeat, it will melt in the morning…

  • Minoru January 4, 2009 (5:36 pm)

There isn’t much (seeing about 1/4 to 1/2 inch in High Point), but it’s definitely making it slippery. We were crazy enough to take a walk with our stroller but quickly cut it short after seeing an SUV fishtail as it made a turn.

  • Caselli78 January 4, 2009 (5:54 pm)

    More snow??? N0000000!!!

Pure white covering the road and sidewalk here. Hope this doens’t keep me from work AGAIN.

  • kevin January 4, 2009 (5:55 pm)

I have Monday’s off! Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow… :)
    .
Coming down heavy and sticking in Arbor Heights.

  • Que January 4, 2009 (5:55 pm)

7-year old daughter’s comment on seeing is snowing again was, “Oh, come ON!!”. Even she doesn’t want to see any more snow.

Ugh. Winter Break for school has been 1/3rd the length of summer vacation at this point. It sure better warm up before they have to make the call about having school tomorrow.

  • jsrekd January 4, 2009 (6:00 pm)

at least 1/2″ at 41st & Holly – the boys are hoping for a 2 hour delay!! Mom & Dad moved the car down near Fauntleroy so we don’t have to depend on Metro in the morning! Just in case.

  • Babs January 4, 2009 (6:03 pm)

I went skiing to Crystal on 12.28/29 and I did not have a good time…because one reason to go is to enjoy snow…not this season – I’m so OVER snow and now its back and I want to scream. By the way Avalon Way has a light white cover. Repeat: “Tomorrow I shall wake up to sun and no snow, “Tomorrow I shall wake up to sun and no snow.”

  • AD January 4, 2009 (6:03 pm)

Was just out driving, and yes, visibility is CRAP. And then my car barely made it up Genesee Hill… :(

I WANT TO GO TO WORK TOMORROW!!!!

  • BG39 January 4, 2009 (6:13 pm)

AD, I’m with you I want and NEED to go to work tomorrow!

  • AlkiRagdoll January 4, 2009 (6:26 pm)

achu… achu… I think I am developing an alergic reaction to SNOW…. It cant keep doing this….. and I called True Value at 4pm to see if they had gotten snow shovels…. guess what the answer was????? NO.

  • p January 4, 2009 (6:26 pm)

west sea bridge is slightly slippery. Just came back from the U district…and btw, to amuse myself while driving I counted 88 street lights that are out. Now, does City Light remember that we are a part of their system?????

  • Rachel January 4, 2009 (6:41 pm)

Looks like an inch, maybe inch and a half at California and Spokane…sooo angry with the weather…

  • pigeonmom January 4, 2009 (6:44 pm)

Sticking on beach @ Fauntleroy Cove

  • WSB January 4, 2009 (6:44 pm)

Paul, re: the street lights – City Light communications department working on that one but told me over the weekend they wouldn’t be able to find out till Monday what the plan is for fixing. I will send them the number you counted.
On the topic of snow – anyone seen a plow or sander truck yet? Leave a comment here (or e-mail us at
    editor@westseattleblog.com
    )
    when you do! – TR

  • LoHo January 4, 2009 (6:48 pm)

I just can’t believe it is happening again.

  • Rhonda January 4, 2009 (6:49 pm)

Drat! The rain is snow now and it is sticking on Beach! :(

  • s January 4, 2009 (6:59 pm)

my neighbor upstairs has been called in. he is a snowplow driver.

  • Pete January 4, 2009 (7:00 pm)

two feet of snow in Pigoen Point and we have hired a private snow plow for tomorrow morning…not taking any chances this time…ok….nightmare is over….right?

  • 22blades January 4, 2009 (7:03 pm)

Worse than struggling to get to work, my vacation just started today. NNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!

  • WSB January 4, 2009 (7:07 pm)

Private snowplow sounds like a GREAT idea – be sure to send photos. I’m trying to figure out how to confirm whether SDOT has indeed dispatched snowplows tonight or not. Our scanner has random frequencies from elsewhere in the county, and it’s clear some Eastside communities have called theirs in (though the crews won’t arrive for another halfhour or so).

  • Peaches January 4, 2009 (7:07 pm)

Might be just wishful thinking, but the area of rain/snow mix colors on weather.com radar is growing, while the area of all snow color is starting to shrink. Temps just might be starting to tick upward. . .

  • AlkiRagdoll January 4, 2009 (7:07 pm)

Anyone in the Alki area loose their satellite connection??? I really want to watch TV tonight…. Rebooted and it zes retrieving satellyte info… 0% for 10 minutes.,,,,,,

  • Cait January 4, 2009 (7:09 pm)

Friend of mine just couldn’t get up Holden. ALREADY??!?!?! And she passed a stuck bus. This is absolutely ridiculous. NEW New years resolution: listen to Al Gore.

  • Peaches January 4, 2009 (7:10 pm)

AlkiRagdoll–snow is collecting on your dish. Try brushing it off with a broom or washing it off with a hose (newly learned trick from a forum thread!).

  • ToddinWestwood January 4, 2009 (7:11 pm)

Our daughter Eloise loves the snow. Mommy is not so excited as Swedish Med. Center. expects then to be in, no excuses.

  • GenHillOne January 4, 2009 (7:13 pm)

Picture isn’t working out, but wanted to warn folks – Dakota end of alley (and adjacent sidewalk) between 44th & 45th currently blocked by a car that is tucked between a retaining wall and the telephone pole. Same place where there were problems last go-around. In that spot, if you can’t get up the incline, you slide sideways. It’s coned now and I think the owner is getting help (not there), so here’s hoping the tow trucks aren’t busy yet. It’s deceivingly slick out there!

  • homedk January 4, 2009 (7:14 pm)

We lost our satellite connection. We’re in Hansen View/Fairmount not Alki though.

  • Scott January 4, 2009 (7:16 pm)

Still lots of dark blue (snow) out there!

  • A neighbor January 4, 2009 (7:17 pm)

Super snowy drive home from downtown. Slicky sticky on Admiral with a small crash right at the lookout curve.

  • Mo January 4, 2009 (7:22 pm)

Just came back to West Seattle from Capitol Hill.

Please use extreme caution going southbound on I-5 near the 6th Ave/Forest exit . . . there is a large amount of fairly deep water that has collected on the freeway, and it is hard to see until you are in it.

  • brittany January 4, 2009 (7:22 pm)

my satellite is out in north delridge. never went out with all the snow before….. yikes. maybe this is stickier stuff?

  • Julian January 4, 2009 (7:24 pm)

Do I need to go out and shovel the snow….AGAIN? Hope it starts raining and melt all the snow away so I don’t have to.

  • Stella January 4, 2009 (7:26 pm)

We lost our satellite too, our kids are loving watching the snow…I can’t afford to miss any more work!!

  • Mary January 4, 2009 (7:28 pm)

There’s a disabled vehicle southbound on 35th Av SW, blocking the middle of both lanes.

  • KH January 4, 2009 (7:28 pm)

I lost satellite also, I’m on 56th just south of Admiral.

  • Magpie January 4, 2009 (7:32 pm)

I’m getting close to a nervous breakdown..how often does it get warmer at night? I have 2 inches on my deck..and I don’t think I can take another 15 hour total commute..plus, I have a nasty cold…arghhh!!

  • celeste17 January 4, 2009 (7:34 pm)

Just drove back from Bothell, Saw two snow trucks on I-5 just before Spokane street exit. Just sitting in the far right lane as if waiting for something.

  • Dan January 4, 2009 (7:37 pm)

Power is out on Sylvan Way between 16th and (it looks like) at least 28th SW. No power at the traffic lights or for the ARCO/Shell stations @Delridge and Sylvan.

People are blowing through the dark intersection, even though it’s a) supposed to be treated as a 4-way stop; and b) it’s within earshot of the police station…

  • pigeonmom January 4, 2009 (7:44 pm)

    Mary, 35th and what?

  • p January 4, 2009 (7:44 pm)

    WSB, thanks on the lights.
Where is the 35th accident? what is the cross street please.
Oh, and I forgot about that HUGE puddle on I5, its bad! Wonder if WDOT can get out and unblock the drain. If memory serves me, there are a few drains there and they must be plugged.

  • Westwood Resident January 4, 2009 (7:45 pm)

    I LOVE THIS!!!!!
    MORE SNOW!!!!!!
I want to see a foot AGAIN!!!
Believe it or not, Sat TV signals CAN be affected by the falling snow. Depends on the wavelength and size of the snow. I know that when I was in the Navy and it rained heavy we used to loose our EHF Sat link. The rain drops were the same size as the wavelength of the signal and would interfere with it. So it might not be snow on the dish, but I would clean it anyway. Any change to the shape of the prabula of your dish will affect the signal.

  • Julia January 4, 2009 (7:46 pm)

Just went outside, measuring a little over 3 inches with the tape measure and still coming down lots in southwest vashon island.

If the weatherman is right and it all gets rained away by morning I’ll be happy. Otherwise, back to the tire chains.

  • Mary January 4, 2009 (7:47 pm)

Sorry, that was disabled vehicle on southbound 35th Av SW at Holden St. Was right in the middle of both lanes at the top of the hill. Hopefully the vehicle has been moved to the side by now …

  • Alice January 4, 2009 (7:47 pm)

Can’t get up 42nd beyond Edmonds, I wouldn’t even consider driving on Edmunds.

  • Roguedelux January 4, 2009 (7:47 pm)

Husband driving right now (iPhone) on Roxbury and slippery in AWD Subaru. Seeing a few cars pulled off to the side on 35th near Morgan.

  • What The January 4, 2009 (7:48 pm)

I just bought the Mayor a Margarita with x-tra salt at one of our local haunts. He sent me on my way and come to find out that it’s actually a mix rain/snow west of the AK junction. Not drivable yet for kids under 11 but soon it will be….

  • lenamegan January 4, 2009 (7:49 pm)

Just drove up Admiral from Fremont. Coming up Admiral, cars stuck in both directions, one took out a tree on the medium in the middle of the street. Seemed fine with 4WD driving slowly but many without it having problems.

  • Magpie January 4, 2009 (7:49 pm)

Our direct tv satellite went out, but my spouse cleaned it off and then sprayed it with Pam (which the direct tv guy said would help if there was snow as it makes it slide right off)..got the signal back (he brushed the snow off with a feather duster)…hope that helps some of you with satellite.

  • Westwood Resident January 4, 2009 (7:51 pm)

Pam is a good idea. I spray on the bottom of our sleds before sledding.

  • *t* January 4, 2009 (7:51 pm)

Gnarly driving from Ravenna to West Seattle, with some idiot jumping his friend’s car battery, side-by-side cars in the right shoulder and a right lane at the top of the bridge. Hope his friend who was directing traffic in all dark clothing did not get creamed.

Serious snow up here in the Hokum Hall area, couldn’t get up Southern street’s 37th-39th block in our front wheel drive Jetta, had to back-down-of-shame.

And yes, OUR KID IS GOING TO SCHOOL TOMORROW or we’re gonna have a mom riot!

  • brittany January 4, 2009 (7:53 pm)

dish is waaaaay up on our roof. guess i’m going to bed early tonite! :)

  • Renaissance Red January 4, 2009 (7:58 pm)

Snow’s falling consistently at 36th and Genessee. Be careful though, I was just out sweeping off my steps and it’s very slippery. I think it’s up to 2 inches of snow on the ground now. The buses are to return to normal schedules I hope Metro doesn’t let me down tomorrow.

  • Mollis January 4, 2009 (8:00 pm)

    Any bus updates?

  • herongrrrl January 4, 2009 (8:02 pm)

Just came from Fauntleroy via Morgan Street Junction and Beach Drive. The worst we encountered was the Thriftway parking lot. Here on Beach Drive it is alternating rain and snow and the ever popular “winter mix”, but some snow is accumulating. Road is pretty slushy.

  • JayDee January 4, 2009 (8:02 pm)

I blame the family that left their inflatable Frosty the Snowman going way past New Years. Frosty is a snow-totem, and now we are all paying the price. ;-) I just hope it melts, and that the family puts Frosty out of our misery.

  • gwyn January 4, 2009 (8:07 pm)

My satellite’s out too, and like others, it never went out during the previous heavier snowfall, which is incredibly irritating. And there’s no way I can get up there to dust anything off. Really making me rethink my decision to give up on cable.

  • PP January 4, 2009 (8:08 pm)

Get your cell phones on the chargers in case we lose power!

  • BG39 January 4, 2009 (8:10 pm)

oh great, now it’s foggy AND snowing

  • flipjack January 4, 2009 (8:11 pm)

I hope it snows 8 feet and shuts down the whole damn internet.

  • Bonnie January 4, 2009 (8:13 pm)

Made it home from Montlake in my non snow driving car. I ended up ditching my car on the side of the road and walked the last 6 blocks though. I’m a snow driving weenie.

  • yumpears January 4, 2009 (8:14 pm)

Just drove home from Children’s Theater in lower Queen Anne. We were in an old toyota camry and made it just fine. Saw two sand truck on the high bridge heading east about 15 minutes ago. The westbound lanes don’t appear to be sanded yet.

  • md January 4, 2009 (8:15 pm)

Live on Barton, near 38th. There’s an articulated #54 bus that’s stuck. Been inching up the hill for the past half hour.

  • BobLoblaw January 4, 2009 (8:18 pm)

    Greg: Where’s our salt?!?

  • pam January 4, 2009 (8:18 pm)

    Snowtastic. Snowriffic.

Heads up, folks, cars are doing a lot of wheel spinning at Holden at California on Holden – it’s tricky tricky driving. We came up 35th around 7pm and it was quite slippery in places. Please please please… slow down, give the cars around you plenty of room, and drive carefully.

  • JH January 4, 2009 (8:20 pm)

Just got back from Target/B&N. Very wet snow! Stupid drivers out like always. I didn’t see the disabled car on Holden so it’s gone or on the side. Saw a few cars stuck, but with 4WD it was okay! All the streets are covered.

Anyone notice branches drooping to the ground? This crap is going to take down trees! I could barely get into my driveway coming home!

  • JH January 4, 2009 (8:20 pm)

Sand trucks on the bridge? HUH? Where are the salt trucks??!!!!

  • AlkiRagdoll January 4, 2009 (8:24 pm)

Thanks for the dish suggestions… was able to get an extended pole to wipe the snow…. and now I can veg in front of the TV having finished my good book…. need reading materials…. so I’m busy here reading the blog. This is really wet snow… much heavier than before…. I am not a weatherman, but I suspect htat unless its a heavy rain, that tomorrow’s commute is going to a wild ride.

  • Westwood Resident January 4, 2009 (8:26 pm)

    AlkiRagdoll,

Get the Twilight series. GOOD books and a fun read!!!

  • flipjack January 4, 2009 (8:27 pm)

Man you people who want salt don’t really know what you are asking for….in a couple years you’ll be complaining about your car panels rusting from the inside out. RUST. that’s why salt is bad.
The Midwest is full of car rust proofing businesses..because they salt the roads.

  • WSB January 4, 2009 (8:30 pm)

Thank you all for the updates, keep ’em coming. We will probably switch to an “Overnight” post around 11 pm. We are continuing to add the newest info at the END of our post so that it’s closer to your comments, which include important information too – but to make it easier for people to get to the newest information we’ve posted, at any time, we’ve embedded a bit of code so that this link will take you to our newest item any time – you’ll also find the link at the top of the post, above the video box. This is the URL:
    https://westseattleblog.com/blog/?p=13281#update
The latest info, fwiw, includes the first city news release of the night.

  • AlkiRagdoll January 4, 2009 (8:30 pm)

Thanks WestResid – when Square One Books opens tomorrow, if I can get out, I’ll try them. Wish I had bought the salt yesterday at Safeway when I noticed their shelvess are stocked. I lived in the midwest (Chicago) for 10 years, and saw very few rusted cars…. give me salt….. uh,,, I think there is a book called Salt.

  • HTS January 4, 2009 (8:36 pm)

I am very sad to see so many people dreading the snow. I – a native eastcoaster who loves the snow – am also freaked out to see the flakes tonight. If SDOT and Mayor Nickles would properly plan, prepare, and plow, we could go about our business as usual, and enjoy the snow – as they do in every other major city in the US that receives snow.

    Remember, there is a meeting re: the snow “response” tomorrow;

    Date: Monday, January 5, 2009
    Time: 9:30am – 12:30pm
    Location: Seattle City Council Chambers
    Street: 600 4th Avenue
    City/Town: Seattle, WA

It will be quite ironic – and hopefully policy-altering – if none of us can get there because of snow on the roads. Oy!

  • DB January 4, 2009 (8:43 pm)

Hey thanks for the Direct TV tip – my husband was going crazy missing the Laker game – we brushed off the snow and there it was!! Thanks WSB Community!

  • alki_2008 January 4, 2009 (8:52 pm)

For those expecting to see salt used tonight – the policy of using salt was that salt would be used in cases where specific conditions are met. I don’t recall those conditions now, but you could do an online search for them. I think there has to be a certain amount of snow, and a forecast that it will stick for a period of multiple days. If the forecasts call for tonight’s snow to be rained away tomorrow, then there won’t be any salt.

People wanted salt under the extreme conditions of a couple weeks ago, and now we’re calling for salt at the first drop of snow?!

  • CarolPB January 4, 2009 (8:53 pm)

I called 911 after going through the HUMONGOUS puddle on I-5 south near 6th South. Was hoping the State Patrol would have taken care of it. We were totally blind for a few very scary seconds. It seemed to me to be an extremely dangerous situation, though my daughter accused me of being dramatic when warning her about the drive home. Coming home to WS from Kirkland between 5:30-6:30 we saw a 3 car accident, one car spin-out and then this flood on I-5.

  • Cait January 4, 2009 (8:58 pm)

I definitely recommend Twilight, Alki. It’s GREAT snow day reading. I read the whole series in about three weeks.

UGH! This snow is not letting up and I’m not happy about it. I don’t need to come back to yet another week’s worth of work after playing in the snow for too long.

  • Lou January 4, 2009 (8:59 pm)

I love the snow! This has been a wonderful winter. I only hope that the Seattle Public Schools don’t freak and cancel classes cuz I need a break from the lil guys ;-)

BTW, just saw the 21 head down 35th SW and Webster (going north) with no chains. Good luck.

  • p January 4, 2009 (9:06 pm)

Give me cable ANY day! My friend in Auburn is out with his dish too. At least with cable we still have ABC!

  • WSB January 4, 2009 (9:08 pm)

@alki_2008 One of the conditions involved 4″ or more being forecast. The forecast here called for no more than 1″. However, if what we just heard is accurate, we’ll have 4″ before it’s all done. I’ll go haul out the link to our coverage from the mayor’s briefing last week (we included the full video clips too if anyone cares) and add it here.
(added) This was our main report on the briefing:
    https://westseattleblog.com/blog/?p=13214

  • Jake January 4, 2009 (9:12 pm)

Just measured 4″ accumulation in the front yard (Hinds & California, block south of West Seattle High). Measured 3″ an hour ago and it’s still coming down steady here.

  • ML January 4, 2009 (9:12 pm)

Still dumping down in Admiral (44th Ave SW)! Awesome! -(notice my use of sarcasam)

  • AlkiRagdoll January 4, 2009 (9:15 pm)

I took a short walk (to the end of the driveway and back as I slid on by tush) and I measure 3 inches,,,, and the weather advisory was to end at 9pm…. calling for 2 inches west of the sound (guess thats us in WS) and its 9:15 and still snowing so hard I cant see Alki. Guess they will update that also…..
I dont expect salt this winter (doubt that they could have ordered and got enuf so soon…. I mean its Nickels… and his B grade). But there sure should be salt by next winter.

  • Cheri January 4, 2009 (9:22 pm)

im worried about the heavy wet snow takin down tree branches onto the power lines… im pluggin in my cell phone right now!!

  • Megen January 4, 2009 (9:23 pm)

Just saw a plow on 35th and Dawson heading southbound. :)

  • bangles January 4, 2009 (9:24 pm)

4+ inches here in Badmiral and still coming down.

  • HTS January 4, 2009 (9:29 pm)

    2″ in Arbor Heights.

  • WTF January 4, 2009 (9:35 pm)

God save the queen!! 5″ 35th/Webster; still coming down. For the first time in 25 years, I WANT to go to work. I ski & grew up in this stuff, but here it’s extremely painful. SUVers are SOBs. I’ve been relegated to watching The Girls Next Door in Aspen; how ironic is that? Please, oh please melt before 6 a.m.

  • JH January 4, 2009 (9:36 pm)

4 1/2 inches in my backyard bordering Schmitz Park! Okay, I’m really not that excited…

  • Jack Loblaw January 4, 2009 (9:40 pm)

I have a 4 letter word for Gridlock Greg: S-A-L-T

  • Mookie January 4, 2009 (9:41 pm)

Still snowing. Got my fingers crossed it melts overnight.

At least this time I can hear water trickling down the drain pipes – no ice!

  • AD January 4, 2009 (9:41 pm)

Cait, I grabbed the Twilight books for “snowed in” reading. I’m currently on the 3rd book…and very annoyed with Bella. She’s such a weak girl sometimes. And I don’t know if I can read “his perfect face” or “crooked smile” one more time. :) But, I will, because I’m addicted.

I’m going to bed now, and hope that I wake to see beautiful, wet, green grass. I haven’t worked in over 2 weeks and I REALLY want to (and need to so I can pay rent next month).

  • WTF January 4, 2009 (9:43 pm)

P.S. And, I’m out of wine!!

  • bangles January 4, 2009 (9:44 pm)

I just wanna know what the meteorologists were smoking today…1 inch…hmmm. I’m glad we have the WSB for reliable reporting. At this rate my boss is going to think I made the whole thing up if I can’t get in to work tomorrow!

  • Jake January 4, 2009 (9:47 pm)

I know I just posted 30 minutes ago, however we now have 1″ more snow than at last measure & it’s still coming down (we’re up to 5″ now here in Admiral District – 1 block from Prost).

  • Jill January 4, 2009 (9:56 pm)

Haven’t read any earlier comments, so this may be a repeat. I don’t know what that King County twitter message at 9:04 was about, but my hubby took the 5/54 from Greenwood at 6:30, and he said it took the snow route even then.

  • andrea January 4, 2009 (9:57 pm)

eeek! we’re up on Genesee Hill and our neighbors very large tree whose many limbs extend over into our yard has already snapped 3 big branches (very loud booms as they cracked aqnd fell) into our yard under the weight of this snow…there are now lose wires hanging all over my yard…we luckily haven’t lost power or any other connections, so I’m assuming the wires in my yard go to my neighbors house who have the tree…my neighbors are out of town however so I don’t know for sure, and I can’t get through to the city on their emergency line (706-0051) to report the breakage as it just rings as a busy signal every time I call…I’ve tried over 100 times!…I’m concerned because there are still many more branches covered in snow hanging over my yard and many more power lines and selfishly I don’t want to lose my power!! No WSB?! Noooo!! Anyway, any thoughts on what else we should be doing? p.s…its still snowing up here and my husband just said there’s at least 3in or more on the ground.

  • Westwood Resident January 4, 2009 (9:57 pm)

I read all four Twilight books in 5 days. Then read them again in another 5 days. If you really like it you should go to Stephanie Meyer’s site and read the outakes and Midnight Sun, it’s from Edward’s point of view.
BTW – The movie is pretty good also. New Moon is due to be released Nov 20, 2009.
Oh, and it’s STILL coming down pretty good in Westwood. Haven’t measured it, but looks like a good 3-4 inches.

  • datamuse January 4, 2009 (9:59 pm)

Four inches and still coming down in Highland Park. If this keeps up I might be getting another day off work (been out for a couple of weeks at this point).

  • pigeonmom January 4, 2009 (10:04 pm)

    1 inch @ ferry dock

  • nuni January 4, 2009 (10:04 pm)

I wish I had the other Twilight books. I just finished the first and I’m dying to read the next!!! Then again, if I start now I won’t be asleep until 3am and I have to work tomorrow.

  • JH January 4, 2009 (10:04 pm)

Well, my prediction was right. I just heard a tree crash in Schmitz Park. That was not a fun thing to hear.

I’d go measure the snow again but I’m not going in my backyard!

  • pigeonmom January 4, 2009 (10:07 pm)

1 inch of snow @ ferry dock. Rain/snow mix now.

  • Big Al (No, Not THAT One) January 4, 2009 (10:10 pm)

Hey y’all. Having fun yet? Well, I know some of you think it is not a good idea for plow trucks to acttually use the plow (and I will resist digressing and calling you names) but I am glad to report that about a half hour ago a plow truck had the blade DOWN! And was plowing snow! Between Roxbury and Barton on 35th — both directions. (Of course, the truck driver still isn’t the brightest bulb on the tree, as he or she plowed the snow into the centerof the road, rather than to the side — but hey, it’s a start.) Remember folks, when it snows, there are two steps: (1) the snow must get plowed to the side where the cars are parked, and (2) the street must be salted (well, since we’re Seattle, sanded). OK, folks, drive safe, but don’t forget to build that snowperson before the white stuff goes away again!

  • JuJu January 4, 2009 (10:10 pm)

There is at least 4 inches here — we, in this neighborhood have at least 10 school age children. Wish us luck tomorrow and send wine, lots of wine.

  • LInda January 4, 2009 (10:13 pm)

We lost our satellite dish as well and, being 40′ up the side of the house, not possible to get with a hose or broom. Dug out the DVD of “The Day After Tomorrow”, seemed somehow appropo…

  • Cait January 4, 2009 (10:14 pm)

Nuni – I’m what is known as a “Twilight Peddler” – I have all the books and am willing to loan them to any and everyone. PM me if you’re interested. And AD – AMEN! As much as I love Twilight, the literary tics are a bit exhausting. My pet peeve – “pressed his mouth into a hard line” – can you even physically do that? What emotion is that supposed to BE? Pooping? Pooping isn’t an emotion. And Edward can’t do that anyway.

  • JH January 4, 2009 (10:15 pm)

There goes another one. Guess I’m sleeping in the basement tonight!

  • JH January 4, 2009 (10:17 pm)

PS The 2nd one could have just been a big branch…

  • Mary T January 4, 2009 (10:19 pm)

Nuni, i have the 4th Twilight and I am happy to get rid of it, I mean, share!

  • roundthesound January 4, 2009 (10:20 pm)

My roommate came home about 2 hours ago and said there was a tree blocking the uphill(Southbound) lane of California at Harbor Ave. Not sure if it’s still there but I would avoid that hill anyway. He also said there was someone inching along using their brakes going downhill-it’s snowing, drop your car into a low gear!

The snow on the ground seems to be turning into slush here at Alki/Harbor, but it’s still snowing.

  • Que January 4, 2009 (10:22 pm)

just saw a snowplow heading north on 35th at Trenton.

Just as an FYI, there is a big metal plate covering gas line construction in the southbound lanes of 35th at Trenton. It is over a great big hole and is bound to be slick and frozen.

  • Jen January 4, 2009 (10:23 pm)

Hey guys, anyone heard from Preggo? I know she was/is due right about now …

  • MargL January 4, 2009 (10:29 pm)

According to the PI salt is being used.

  • WSB January 4, 2009 (10:31 pm)

Que, good reminder. There are so many of those plates still in place – checking on that project is on my followup list, because even where the plates are gone, going down Barton, there is so much uneven asphalt …

  • Traci January 4, 2009 (10:33 pm)

Oh man, apparently my “Twilight radar” just went off because I was drawn back to this thread! I just finished Eclipse and agree with AD… Really could Bella be any more self deprecating??! Still hooked though!

I think the snow’s thinning out… I tried to drive in it about an hour ago and it was sketchy. Careful everyone, I’ve been hearing more sirens than usual tonight.

  • Traci January 4, 2009 (10:34 pm)

Also my power has been flickering. Uh-oh!

  • kirida January 4, 2009 (10:34 pm)

4 loud explosions, flickering lights and then a short power outage in High Point – creepy!!! What is going on?

  • alison January 4, 2009 (10:41 pm)

It’s the end of the world!

  • p January 4, 2009 (10:41 pm)

Ok, I was at the laundry cleaning it up and at 10:15 3, count them, 3 PLOWS, with BLADES DOWN! going south on 35th, and they were right behind each other, followed by an SDOT van. Then about 10:35 a single plow headed north on 35th. So, that is 1/9th of our plow force on 35th alone. Then while driving home on 28th ave sw just south of Roxbury Safeway power was flickering on and off.

  • p January 4, 2009 (10:43 pm)

and i forgot, my neighbors lines were hanging about mid windshield when I traveled out. So, while you are out driving around be careful!

Lights flickering here too, just east of the bridge

I just started a new post about the power – we were going to switch over to an overnight post anyway. Our power also is out; we’re at the junction of two arterials atop a hill and can’t see lights anywhere in view. We have major battery supplies plus two different wireless Internet providers so we’ll continue reporting. Trying to find out more about the extent of the outage – TR

power flickering at findlay/california, but not out yet. weather.com says it’s supposed to be in the upper 30s by midnight and 40s by morning. hopefully that will give this plenty of time to melt before the morning commute. if not, i guess west seattle will cease to exist again to buses, plows, ups service, power, sanitation trucks…

  • d January 4, 2009 (10:58 pm)

I was out walking the dog earlier –

Utility and phone lines are sagging really low. As are tree limbs.

Heads up & be careful everybody if you are out there walking!

And just a note to my fellow walkers of dogs in the snow: bring your bags and pick up their poop Dog’s won’t want to wade through the drift of accumulated snow to pee or poop, so they’ll do it on the sidewalk, if the snow is compressed at all.

Give your neighbors a break. Just a thought.

    Woof and good night ;).

  • Bounce January 4, 2009 (11:03 pm)

Power now stabilized (on) on Admiral hilltop. Snow gently falling. FWIW, it’s very pretty. You gotta give it that.

power out at 37th/Barton per report from family

Sorry, comment time is over.
