West Seattle Weather Watch: Monday morning post-snow updates

(CLICK HERE TO JUMP TO THE NEWEST UPDATE; SCHOOL STATUS: SEATTLE PUBLIC SCHOOLS, OPEN ON TIME, RUNNING REGULAR BUS ROUTES; VASHON SCHOOLS 2-HR DELAY FOR POWER OUTAGE)

ORIGINAL 4 AM POST: We’ll be on the live-update beat in the 5 am hour, but we’re setting this up sooner so you can start checking the latest commute and school info early, and sharing the situation where you’re at (watch out for the wind, which started to pick up after 2 am):

METRO ROUTE CHANGES: Before the snow began to melt in the wee hours, it had affected myriad bus routes. Go here for the latest list of changes.

TRAFFIC CAMS: All the cams of specific West Seattle interest (including routes out of/into WS) can be found on the WSB Traffic page.

LIVE 911 LOG: Check it here, just in case you hear a siren or see a fire/aid crew. (Remember, this site shows Fire Department responses only, not police.)

TRASH/YARD WASTE/ETC.: No updates from Seattle Public Utilities since the snow, so we’ll refer you to the story we published at midday Sunday.

5:54 AM UPDATE: Back live. Just finishing a phone conversation with a Seattle City Light spokesperson. They have no estimated time for restoration of this outage, nor any specific information so far on where it originated. As for schools – no word of any changes, so far, for Seattle Public Schools, per either online source. Here’s the latest Metro overview, saying “most” routes are normal this morning (use the link above to see whether yours is among the exceptions).

6:05 AM UPDATE: As “Cheeky” points out in comments, Seattle Public Schools just updated its homepage to say “All Seattle Public Schools will open on time today, Monday, January 5, and buses will operate on regular routes.” Wait! Power just came back on! (6:07 am)

6:21 AM UPDATE: Co-publisher Patrick is going out to see if any outage pockets remain. A couple reports of restored power have come in via Twitter, so we’re hopeful that means everyone is back on. Regarding buses – several West Seattle routes are listed in the latest Metro update on route changes – so check this list before you go. We have a road-condition report from Scott C, who commuted to Everett about an hour ago – 35th a little slushy, bridge OK, I-5 just fine. (Lou says the same thing in comments re: the drive to downtown.) One more school note – Vashon mentions a 2-hour delay, with the possibility that might change if power there remains out.

6:40 AM UPDATE: From SDOT, via Twitter: “SDOT has 20 plows clearing city streets. 3 dedicated to the WS Bridge and the Alaskan Way Viaduct. Roads in downtown in very good shape.” Patrick is just back from driving around the area and says it looks like the power is back on for everyone — if not for you, be sure City Light knows (684-3000) — but some stoplights haven’t returned to normal yet; 26th and Barton, by Westwood Village, for example, was “flashing red and yellow simultaneously,” he reports. Roads are slushy but drivable; the walkway outside your home may be your biggest troublespot, so keep that in mind.

7:35 AM UPDATE: Still watching the commute overall. No major problems, aside from the aforementioned bus reroutes. Our nearest arterial (California SW, south through Gatewood) is mostly bare and wet – quite a difference from previous post-snow situations, but then again, circumstances were different too – warmer temperatures, wetter snow. The latest forecast is resolute that temperatures will stay higher for quite some time, but also mentions breeziness today. Online note: WSDOT says via Twitter that its website is having trouble today because of a cooling problem in the server room.

7:51 AM UPDATE: Two notes: Marilyn Mar from City Light just called to say that not everybody’s back on — about 300 homes/businesses in West Seattle remain without power. Also, a trash truck just turned up in our neighborhood, on what you would consider a side street, so that could be a good omen for everyone expecting pickup today.

8:04 AM UPDATE: Medic/fire crews have just been dispatched to a “motor vehicle accident” call at West Marginal Way/Highland Park Way. Meanwhile, another arterial report: Brian at Stor-More Self-Storage (WSB sponsor) says Avalon’s “slush and blacktop” (they’re midway up the Avalon hill, at Yancy).

8:14 AM UPDATE: The Marginal/HP Way call has closed already, which at the very least indicates no serious injuries.

9:09 AM UPDATE: Streets near us are now mostly just puddled. Commute still fairly uneventful, though some scattered reports of bus delays. We’ll add word here if anything else major happens but otherwise, in 20 minutes we’ll be covering the City Council briefing about last month’s storm response, first of several. Today’s briefing — 9:30 am, you can watch live on cable or online via Seattle Channel — is described as follows:

An overview from Office of Emergency Management and Seattle Department of Transportation on the Storm Response, including information from the Seattle Fire Department and Seattle Police Department.

I’ve visited the metro list (http://metro.kingcounty.gov/up/rr/adverseweather.html), but am interested in info from bus passengers. Is a trip from Ballard to WS (Arbor Heights) doable this morning?

  • AIE January 5, 2009 (5:18 am)

Any word as to if any of the WS schools are impacted by power outages?

  • Ken January 5, 2009 (5:45 am)

Since it is 42 degrees and radar shows more rain moving in from the north, we should assume this will be a classic Seattle Snow storm and the streets will be bare and wet.

Seattle schools would have called it by now if there were any delays or closures. I can’t think of a reason for one at the moment unless a specific school was in an power outage area.

Plot your particular school on google maps and then check the outage page.

Woke up at 12:45, had begun to rain, 4:15 to let the cat out, about half of the snow gone..now, maybe an inch left and very slushy..I guess it can warm up significantly at night..over 10 degrees. I am not unhappy to see the rain. Hopefully metro has its you know what together this am.

  • Cheeky January 5, 2009 (6:02 am)

Seattle Public Schools homepage states that all Seattle District schools will be running on time with buses running on their regular routes.

My son won’t be pleased, but I certainly am. ;)

  • WSB January 5, 2009 (6:09 am)

Posted this in main post too but … power JUST came back on here at 6:07 am. Hallelujah. If you’re online via battery/generator and do NOT have power back, please report in!

  • Giyen January 5, 2009 (6:10 am)

Vashon School District says 2 hour delay but I am a little skeptical that they will get the power up and running by that time.

School Report says “stay tuned” for additional updates.

Daughter is frustrated she got up at 5 am. Lots of groaning. :)

  • Lou January 5, 2009 (6:22 am)

Just drove from 35th and Webster to Downtown…all streets wet, no snow in driving lanes – only in middle of road and on sides. Bridges is fine, downtown streets are fine.

  • Lou January 5, 2009 (6:24 am)

Our power flickered last night but only went out for a short time. The extent of the outage went up to 35th and Austin, but lights were on from 35th/Webster north.

We did lose our cable/internet – apparently, that is dependent on the power to our south (this is what happened in the Dec/2006 windstorm – we had power but no cable until the streets to our south had power).

  • J January 5, 2009 (6:29 am)

Any word on the Queen Anne area? I have an important dr’s appt up there this morning.

  • eigenwijs January 5, 2009 (6:43 am)

Main power line to Vashon has been been restored – the town has power. But many outlying areas still in the dark.

  • WSB January 5, 2009 (6:46 am)

J – there’s nothing remaining on the City Light outage-list page that looks like Queen Anne
    http://www2.seattle.gov/light/outage2/
although those boundaries are notoriously imprecise to say the least.

  • Lou January 5, 2009 (7:06 am)

WSB: what is the point of calling SCL if they tell you no ETA but 15 minutes later your power returns? I would think they could provide a better estimate/idea over the phone or is that asking for too much.

  • WSB January 5, 2009 (7:16 am)

Well, as opposed to not calling, that’s all I could do. The communications folks at various public agencies don’t necessarily get specifics of which crew is where and when. No ETA sometimes means an absence of specific information more than “we’ve checked with them and they don’t know how long it will take.” Which once again speaks to the point we made after Snowmare ’08 … what would it take to get specifics, and what’s currently in the way of those specifics being available? This morning’s the first City Council briefing about the last round of snow – we’ll be watching (9:30 am, should be live online and on TV, and we’ll post about it; tomorrow, another one at 9:30 am, with public-comment opportunities).

  • Lou January 5, 2009 (7:25 am)

fyi…my snarky comment was directed at SCL…not you :-) just to be clear.

  • Jill Loblaw January 5, 2009 (7:29 am)

Commute to Issaquah from W.S. is fine. All roadways encountered from California Ave. SW and Charlestown to 1-5 via high bridge to 1-90 and onward were only wet with some slush on sides. It is still very dark out limiting visibility.

  • Jill Loblaw January 5, 2009 (7:31 am)

Also I-90 eastbound after North Bend is closed currently (per freeway sign).

  • AlkiRagdoll January 5, 2009 (7:54 am)

    Any reports on Admiral way?

  • WSB January 5, 2009 (8:09 am)

We haven’t seen anything yet but all arterial reports we’ve received in other areas are essentially what we just heard from Brian along Avalon: “Slush and blacktop.” It’s warmed up so much that ice is not an option, though slush certainly can be as slippery when it’s packed.

  • HTS January 5, 2009 (8:10 am)

Our nanny said she can’t make it from the U District to WS – buses are either full, not showing up, or jack-knifed up there.

  • Al January 5, 2009 (8:23 am)

Sidewalks were treacherous at about 6:45 this morning.

  • Mollis January 5, 2009 (9:15 am)

FYI – Caught the 21x this morning right on time and made it to work with minutes to spare. Seem to be no problems once you’re out on the main roads. The hike to the bus stop was a different story – 2+ inches of wet snowy slush. My feet are soaked! :)

  • Jenava January 5, 2009 (9:16 am)

My bus didn’t show at 8:54 at Fauntleroy and Alaska, so I had to wait and extra 20 minutes. No wonder most people don’t take the bus! I am thinking I need to buy a car so I can get to work in the Winter! Metro needs to step up their game. Very disappointing.

  • AlkiRagdoll January 5, 2009 (9:19 am)

Just made it to work (Edmunds and 41st). Trash is being collected in the Jeff Square area, and the roads were fine. Cars are even getting up Edmunds between 41st and 42nd…….
Admiral Way was as good as I could ask, as was California…. and peeps were even driving cautiously… yeahh….Lets hope this is the last.

  • fiz January 5, 2009 (9:43 am)

Watch out for two downed trees on southbound West Marginal Way. I didn’t see the first one in the dark and rain this morning and hit it, fortunately with little damage. Vehichles may be swerving to miss it.

  • Sue January 5, 2009 (9:50 am)

I had no problem on the 54X this morning. And my garbage was picked up as it usually is, early on Monday mornings. Now if only my UPS package comes today, then life might be back to normal!

  • JH January 5, 2009 (9:58 am)

My commute from near Schmitz Park to downtown was fine! Once I got to Admiral Way, everything was totally clear. They must have plowed Admiral last night because there was snow in the middle (going towards the bridge), and some dumba** truck drive drove into it and threw snow all over my car. I was blinded for about two seconds! That’s the only thing to watch out for. No snow downtown at all.

  • JenV January 5, 2009 (9:59 am)

they just collected our garbage & recycle – California/Findlay area.

  • Roland January 5, 2009 (10:15 am)

Not sure if this is snow related, but my Comcast Internet and TV signals are down (using backup connection through my phone). The Comcast service rep said it was an area-wide outage. This is in the neighborhood just west of the PCC.

  • WSB January 5, 2009 (10:18 am)

Roland – we did have some reports last night about outages concurrent with the power going out. We have Comcast in Upper Fauntleroy and both the cable and internet are working now (our power came back on four hours ago, don’t know what happened with them in the interim).

  • Harmonic January 5, 2009 (10:23 am)

The downed tree on W.Marginal took out my passenger mirror this morning. It was too late and I couldn’t swerve since there was a car next to me.

  • fiz January 5, 2009 (10:47 am)

Ditto. My radio antenna now sits at a rather jaunty angle. Think I’ll leave it that way to remember the Winter of ’09.

  • fiz January 5, 2009 (2:21 pm)

Just discovered my windshield is broken as well.

    =

    Watch out for that tree!

  • WSB January 5, 2009 (2:25 pm)

Where on Marginal was it? Patrick went down looking around at midday and didn’t see anything …but we may not have gone far enough.

  • fiz January 5, 2009 (2:40 pm)

Southbound at the greenbelt on the curve. I wonder if it has been cleared. We were headed to the airport at 6:30 a.m. when I hit it. Sobering experience.

  • MargL January 5, 2009 (4:32 pm)

No yardwaste pickup in Arbor Heights yet – 34th and 104th. I’m gonna be annoyed if they skip this week. I took the tree down last night specifically so I could throw it in yardwaste today!

  • JH January 5, 2009 (4:54 pm)

I’m a little confused. My recycling was picked up today-it was picked up last week! So now the yard waste has been sitting what, a month or so? Why did they pick up recycling two weeks in a row? Are they stupid? Like Marg, I took my tree down also. I dragged it outside this morning and smelled like sap all day at work! Nice. At least no one got near me.

  • roland January 5, 2009 (5:37 pm)

JH, Last week’s recycling pickup was to catch up on the previous missed pickups. I was glad, because it would have been three missed recycling pickups… at a time when there are a lot of extra boxes, bottles, cans, and paper from the holiday celebrations.

On the other hand, like you I do not appreciate the fact that they deliberately skipped last week’s pickup of recycling waste either. On the plus side, the yard waste container is huge, has a fairly solid lid, we don’t have a lot of leaves and lawn clippings to store at this time of year, plus the cold weather keeps the odor and attraction to bugs at a minimum. I have also been adding shredded paper at planned intervals to cover the compost pile.

  • Courtney January 5, 2009 (6:49 pm)

Yeah I don’t get the whole yard waste/recycling thing either. I checked the SPU website last night to double check that today was my yard waste day. We put out the yard waste but it was never picked up. I have a garage full of recycling I would have put out had I known they would pick that up! So, does anyone know if they are going to come pick up my yard waste, or should I put it away again for a week? And next week says recycle, but is that correct? I’m confused!

  • JH January 5, 2009 (7:01 pm)

SPU makes me feel so sappy!

  • eileen January 5, 2009 (8:51 pm)

No trash pick up or yard waste pick up. It’s really a drag since we separate out our compostable food scraps. Our Yard waste bin is full, full, full. I had to put a brick on it because the wind keeps flipping the top open and the crows drag our food scraps around. Why didn’t they pick up – ’cause it rained?

  • eileen January 5, 2009 (8:52 pm)

Forgot to add this – they should give us all a rebate since they have not been providing services.

  • WSB January 5, 2009 (9:13 pm)

The mayor did announce last week that there would be rebates. No details (that’s the question I was shouting as he left the room, amid many other questions being shouted too, 15 minutes after the briefing began) – I spoke with our SPU contact immediately afterward and he said the numbers were still being crunched. If details (like, how much $ and how do you get it?) are not revealed when SPU participates in tomorrow’s City Council briefing (remember, this one’s open to public comment, if anyone happens to be free to go downtown at 9:30 tomorrow morning), we will be asking for an update immediately afterward.

  • MargL January 5, 2009 (11:15 pm)

I was driving home tonight thru the Arbor Heights area and many of my neighbors, and myself, never did get their yardwaste picked up. Some folks have quite a bit stacked up on their curb. I double checked the calendar on the website and we were supposed to have yardwaste picked up. I reported it thru the online form but it’s pretty annoying for SPU to say they’re on a ‘regular’ schedule when obviously they’re not caught up yet.

Sorry, comment time is over.
