Speeder-catching van @ Gatewood Elementary on Monday

Just announced by the mayor’s office: A new van using photo radar to crack down on school-zone speeders will be introduced by Mayor Nickels, Seattle Police Chief Gil Kerlikowske, and City Councilmember Nick Licata at Gatewood Elementary on Monday. That’ll be the fourth WS mayoral event in less than four weeks (click these links for coverage of the previous three: Alki Elementary walk, the Sanislo Elementary sidewalk, the Orchard Street Ravine dedication). P.S. Next week’s a big one for Gatewood – on Friday, the school hosts Seattle Green Schools‘ Earth Summit.

That van was out on Fauntleroy Way a block or two north of Gatewood on Tuesday morning at around 8:30am. Unfortunately the little flash went off as I drove by, so I hope I don’t get a ticket. I was trying to read all the signs saying “photo enforced” and wondering what it was all about as I passed the van, and yes, I was going over the 20mph speed limit (maybe about 25-28). I’ll let you know if I get a nice little somethin’ in the mail later!

I just sent a request to SDOT, pointing out that the two school zones on 16th SW between Barton and SSCC (for Highland Park and Sanislo, I believe) have no signs indicating the end of the school zone. I really appreciate having those signs on Fauntleroy, so I don’t have to think about where 300 ft ends, and I know where I can return to 30 mph. I think they’d be helpful on 16th, too.

I am SO thankful that SPD is cracking down on Fauntleroy at Gatewood School. When visiting family at The Kenney we see really stupid, inconsiderate and dangerous drivers in this zone. Putting children and the elderly at risk to save a few seconds makes no sense to me.

And don’t forget that California ave East of Gatewood is also a school zone, although no formal 20 mpg signs are posted. The area is to the North and South of Caffe Ladro.

My wife got a warning in the mail yesterday – nabbed 10/10 at 50th and Charlestown going like a bat of of hell 26 in a 20 zone. Just a warning this time but it would be a $186 ticket… I knew flames on the side of the mini-van was a bad idea.

Sorry, comment time is over.
