Admiral postal station closing after a quarter-century

That’s longtime West Seattle businessman Verne Valentine with (left to right in front) Janet Ives, Tina McLauchlan, and Linda Bagocki. They’re smiling but it’s not an entirely cheery time – Verne e-mailed WSB to ask that we share the news that the U.S. Postal Station that’s been at the same location as his Farmers’ Insurance office at 2237 California SW (north of Admiral) is closing next month after 25 1/2 years. He explains, “The U.S. Postal Service has drastically changed the operation parameters to the extent that Farmers Insurance Agency personnel have been forced to discontinue the association.” He says the postal annex will be ending operations July 12th but his Farmers’ Insurance office is not affected and, in fact, is expanding into the space that won’t be needed for postal operations any more.

Will the public mailbox remain on the sidewalk out front? That’s the one and only street mailbox I know about in the whole Admiral neighborhood. There used to be another on the east sidewalk of the Admiral Safeway, but it was supposedly knocked over by a car several years ago and the U.S. post office has never gotten around to replacing it.

    We’ll ask.

Did the USPS change the operation perimeters or the operation parameters?

    The latter, will fix.

Forest – we just checked and they don’t know whether the box will stay, as it’s there because of its proximity to the substation. We suspect that a few hours of chasing down the appropriate folks in the USPS media unit might yield this info – we’re off to some other events this afternoon but will start checking on that tomorrow if we don’t get a chance later today.

I guess these new “parameters” include eliminating all stamp machines. The WS station removed theirs a few months ago and won’t be replaced, according to the counter agent. Even the main PO on 4th has removed all the stamp machines except the one that takes credit/debit cards.
    .
I know that you can buy stamps at a lot of places besides toe PO, but what if you want, say, the flashy Sinatra stamps? The vending machines could sell those.

Sorry, comment time is over.
