West Seattle Sunday scenes: Lupus walk; leukemia spin

At Anchor (Luna) Park on Alki Avenue, that video shows the scene as an enthusiastic woman (who told us she does this every year) and two kids greeted Walk with Us to Cure Lupus participants at the first turnaround point (for a shorter loop than the 5K walkers). While hundreds of people joined in that awareness- and money-raising event this morning, a trio of triathloners spent the afternoon under a tent in The Junction to fight leukemia and lymphoma — more on both events ahead:

You may not hear a lot about lupus, but according to the Alliance for Lupus Research, it affects as many as one million people in the U.S. — and 90 percent of them are women. Read more about it here. They have walks like this one around the country to raise money for research toward a cure. Here’s a longer look at the Alki crowd:

Not long after that event ended, this one began, right in front of West 5 in The Junction:

That’s Megan Jasper, Steve Manning (spinning), and Kerry Murphy (who proclaim themselves “die-hard West Seattleites”). They are participating in the Team in Training triathlon series for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society; in three weeks, they’ve got a race in Hawaii, and they’re still raising pledge and sponsorship money. They’re raising it online (links in this WSB post from earlier today) but they decided to get right out into the middle of the Sunday crowds, with West 5’s support. Here’s a little bit of the whimsical pitch they made to passersby:

They told us they’re going to do this again in two weeks, so you might get to hear the line about the Spandex again – in person. Maybe you’ll even see the mascot who accompanied them today – Denali:
