West Seattle Crime Watch: Reader reports plus followups

Several reader reports from people who want to alert neighbors to recent break-ins/thefts, plus weekend followup notes, all ahead:

First, the followups. Still working to find out what the search west of The Junction on Saturday night was about; hope to find it in the latest sheaf of reports at the Southwest Precinct. Also got two notes about a traffic detour at Alki Ave/California Way late Saturday afternoon — Lt. Steve Paulsen says that’s SOP if things get too jammed up on Alki – they just reroute for a while. And we’re also checking on whether anyone was cited/arrested in a chain-reaction crash that happened in the 6900 block of Delridge this morning; no serious injuries reported but apparently more than a few cars were damaged.

Now, the reader reports. Stephanie is hoping you might have seen the items taken from her:

Last week we had a theft in front of our house on 44th between Fauntleroy and Holly. We were moving items to load into a car…. a few bags were left on the sidewalk for about 15 minutes (yes…we realize that was not smart) and were gone by the time we returned with more. The stuff was not really worth all that much….there is just a lot of sentimental value attached to some of the items. The important missing items were a pile of old family photographs. a hand-painted checkerboard on masonite, a bag of plastic chess pieces and a box of plastic checkers. The items were in either a blue ikea bag or a black and white striped bag.

From Michael in North Admiral:

We’ve been hit with a rash of incidences of vandalism and theft in our North Admiral neighborhood (42nd Ave SW between SW Walker and SW Ferry). Last week, neighbors discovered the air in the tires of their car parked in the alley (between 42nd and California) had been let out. There were also incidences of car break-ins (follow the thread below) and a large glazed ceramic pot taken from my front yard this past Friday (5/16).

From Pigeon Point, a report that a car was broken into within the past few days on 22nd SW, and a triathlon racing bicycle was taken.

And from Jessica:

I just wanted to tell you about a break in/burglary last Thursday … in the 6500 block of 37th Ave SW right off of Morgan. They broke in through the basement door in the back of the house by breaking the lock and stole mainly electronics. The big ticket items gone were a flat screen tv, bose surround sound system and a brand new laptop. The made a real mess of the place, drawers emptied all over the house, their belongings scattered around. The break-in occurred during the afternoon between the time my dad left at 3 pm and when his girlfriend got home at 8 pm. I just thought maybe the neighborhood would like to know!

If you have crime concerns — or want to be sure you’re doing everything you can to stay safe — don’t miss the West Seattle Community Safety Partnership meeting tomorrow night, 7 pm, Southwest Precinct meeting room. Among the agenda items is a police presentation on “casing” — certainly a hot topic here in recent weeks.

To Michael in North Admiral – On May 6 I had two ceramic (flower) pots taken right off our front steps. The dirt in them was even dumped out, on the steps. The next day, two pots (matching ours)belonging to our neighbor were taken. Maybe the same person took yours? We live in North Admiral as well.

On Friday 5/16 between 11a.m. and noon, our lawnmower was taken from the side of our house in Pigeon Point. We reported it to police.

What color were the stolen pots? Is there a color theme going on? Were any plants taken along with Michael’s pots?

I’ve had plants stolen, dug up from right beside a front door overnight (in another state). I also know a local woman whose entire brand new set of boxwoods (ack) were dug up, theived.

    Very rude.

Stolen mowers, planter pots, etc. might turn up at the pawn shops in WS and White Center as well as at buy-and-sell shops like the one on Delridge Way just north of the library.

To Irukandji, our pot was a dark brown pot with a ribbed design going from top to bottom. They were about 3 ft. high and had not plants or potting soil yet (we had just purchased them a day or two earlier, and it was to be my weekend project). Because of some trees, our front yard is not that overly visible from the street so it would really require someone on foot scoping out opportunities. The pot itself is quite heavy. It is possible that one person could lift it but it would be really awkward.

BTW, two other neighbors told us their cars were ransacked Sunday night.

Ours were also dark brown/bronze color and about a foot high. Nothing planted in them yet, but had potting soil from last year still in them (which was dumped on the step). I don’t understand why anyone would steal these – there surely isn’t any value at a pawn or resale shop, right?

Sorry, comment time is over.
