Free plants!

Too good not to share immediately (the deadline to apply is Friday) – someone in West Seattle just might be perfect:

This just came in on the Camp Long info list, but please note, the contact info – including where you send the application – is a different agency, the Northwest Environmental Education Council, with the relevant e-mail address at the very bottom:

The Northwest Environmental Education Council is offering free native plants and installation support to Seattle homeowners wanting to turn their yard into native plant habitat.

Application Deadline: All requests must be received by Friday, February 22, 2008 at 5 P.M. Early submittal is strongly encouraged.

How does this work?
– Interested Seattle homeowners will reply to this email [WSB NOTE: Send to the address at the bottom of this post] answering the questions listed below.
– The Council will review all applicants and inform the successful applicant of their acceptance by February 27, 2008.
– The Council will provide a consultation with the landowner to help them plan their native plant habitat and to provide instructions on how to prepare their yard.
– On Saturday, March 29, 2008, the Council will host a native plant gardening workshop at the successful applicant’s home during which the applicant and workshop participants will learn how to garden with native plants (including installing some plants in the successful applicant’s yard). The Council will provide approximately 100 native trees, shrubs, and ground cover in accordance with the homeowner’s preference.
– The successful applicant will install the remainder of the plants in their yard by April 14, 2008 to ensure they are in the ground before the “warm season.”

Required Qualifications:
– Seattle home owner (no other applicants will be accepted).
– Area for planting must comprise a major component of the entire yard (all of the front or backyard for example).

Desired Qualifications (not required):
– Applicants wanting to replace their lawn with native plants;
– Applicants with homes adjacent to parks and greenbelts;
– Applicants who have been in their home for more than ten years; and,
– Applicants who have prior experience gardening with native plants.

    Oh, so cool! I’ve been wanting blackberry bushes, too! ;-) Actually, very sweet deal!

Sorry, comment time is over.
