IMO holiday lights are a huge waste of electricity and another gross display of useless materialism. Skip it and donate instead if you have that kind of extra money.

compromise and use the new technology sparingly...
or donate as much as you spend for a guilt free display.
or add a donation barrel for the local food bank to the front of your display...
or...
mellaw6565.. i would hate to see many of those displays go. When i was young, those christmas displays were about all we had in the way of christmas entertainment... it was a big deal to pile in the car and cruise the local displays or pile on the bus to walk to one of the mega displays across town. We could never pay to ride the haywagon.. but walking was free... and we brought our own hot chocolate and snacks.
it was such a big deal that i piled the family chevy full of neighborhood kids when we went. you couldn't do that now with seat belt laws... but that chevy held a lot of kids.
it's easy to forget how much that can mean to someone without the the means to attend other events.
thos people who took the time and spent to create displays really brought festivity and sparkle to our christmas.
and those who do so today still bring sparkle to mine...

I personally love to see all the lights up. I contribute to the holiday lights and displays. I can remember taking my nephews out for a drive to look at all the lights and then going to Charlestown Cafe to have hot cocoa.

i am allowing myself two small christmas trees and three decorated windows with high efficiency lights...
luckily i don't have an outside plug for lights at this house or i might do more.
i confess that i favor cutesy lawn ornaments.. in Minnesota we had a small snowman on a sled that the neighbor kids starting bugging me to put out the day after thanksgiving... and lights for the bushes under the windows... but even those can be had somewhat inexpensively these days in LED.
i got an email from a neighbor who says that the decorations we left with the house are up again... it's nice to know a tradition lives on.

hey k, send us your Palm Springs light photo, we'll say it's from a WS expatriate!!!
editor@westseattleblog.comP.S. The new LED lights use vastly less electricity. I'll find a comparison somewhere but you can probably save more energy by dropping a car trip than by shutting down your holiday lights.

Personally, I HATE X-mas, but I LOVE the lights (as long as you take them down before New Years, that is) The lights are the only part of the holiday I can get behind, other than a day off work. I say keep 'em coming!

Thanks Zenguy!
From his link:
The following chart compares the cost to light an eight-foot tree for 30 days, five hours per day, the average Seattle City Light rate of 8 cents per kilowatt hour:
Light Type Electricity Costs
Standard C-7
(125 bulbs, 4 watts each) $6.00
Mini Lights
(300 bulbs, 0.4 watts each) $1.44
LED Lights
(280 bulbs, 0.04 watts each) $0.13Posted 3 years ago # -

One of my very few Christmastime traditions is to drive around and look at Christmas lights. (Especially on a foggy night when they're all glowy - I love that!) A good friend of mine and I now make the driving around extra special by delivering candles to our friends to celebrate the Winter Solstice. So, we get to look at lights in different neighborhoods, visit friends, and listen to Elvis singing Christmas Carols! It just doesn't get much better than that...

30th from Roxbury to Delridge has at least 3 very well lit houses.

I'm a traditionalist when it comes to Christmas lights. And I pay a little extra when the City Light bill comes in January. Retro style Christmas lights (the big ones!) make me happy. Of course, the more than 200 Santas around the house this time of year are uplifting too. I'm glad there is room for everyone to celebrate the holidays the way they want to.
