West Seattle Crime Watch: Alki window culprit(s) update; more

From the reports at the Southwest Precinct: Remember the car-window shooting on 61st SW reported by Mark two days ago? handcuffs_2.jpgA day later — yesterday around 3:30 pm — a passerby spotted “two juveniles” on the roof of a house in the same area, 3000 block of 61st SW, with suspected pellet/airsoft handguns. One of them was believed to be a 15-year-old boy who lives in that same house, but nobody was home when police arrived minutes later; no arrest yet but it’s a high-priority case. Now, the rest of the stories, including a drunken teen on the run, and stolen donations at a local school:

MORE TROUBLE ON “EARLY DISMISSAL” DAY: When we first discussed the Alki car-window attack (as mentioned above), it was noted that Wednesday was “early dismissal” day for local public schools. Here’s something else that happened early that afternoon: An officer caught two girls, 15 and 16, halfway through two 40-ounce bottles of Olde English HG 800 at a bus stop in the 4800 block of California. They were both visibly intoxicated; they both said an “adult male” had bought the beer for them. When police took them to the Southwest Precinct, the 15-year-old girl managed to bolt, and made it to neighboring Home Depot before officers recaptured her. She was booked into the Youth Services Center (aka Juvenile Hall).

MISSING MONEY: It wasn’t reported until today, but sometime between Monday morning and Wednesday afternoon, someone stole a large sum of cash from a cabinet at Holy Family School. The police report describes the money as having come from fundraising donations. A school leader told police they’d never had a theft like this before in her 20 years at the school.

NOT JUST STOLEN – STOLEN FROM POLICE: Just after 8 o’clock last night, at 10th SW and Trenton, an officer ran a routine check on the license plate of an SUV. It came back as stolen from the Port of Seattle Police Department. Needless to say, the officer promptly pulled over the SUV. The 29-year-old driver wouldn’t give his name, but two other officers recognized him — because they had arrested him within the past two weeks … for auto theft. His two passengers were allowed to go, but he was taken to the King County Jail. The jail register shows he’s still there, and it’s his fifth time there in the past seven months.

THE POLITICAL CAMPAIGN GETS UGLIER: Early last Saturday, in the 44400 block of 46th SW, someone stuck a drawing of a swastika under the wiper blade of a car that happened to have an Obama sign displayed on the dashboard on the other side of that wiper blade. The car’s owner didn’t feel threatened or in danger, but thought police should know.

DOUBLE (WEAPON) TROUBLE: Yesterday afternoon, police were summoned to 42nd/Charlestown to check out a “disturbance” involving teenagers. A 15-year-old boy was arrested after police found two illegal “butterfly knives” on him.

GUN TURNED IN TO POLICE (MAYBE JUST IN TIME): A man showed up at the Southwest Precinct at quarter till noon Wednesday with a 22-caliber handgun he wanted to turn in. It was a black Remington with the serial number sawed off; he said he didn’t want it in the house — it had belonged to his ex-roommate, who just moved out, heading for Nevada or Arizona, saying (according to the police report) “he had to leave Seattle before he kills someone.”

CRACK TURNED IN TO POLICE: Around lunchtime yesterday, someone working in the 6500 block of 35th called police to turn in a baggie of crack cocaine that a co-worker found on 32nd between Raymond and Juneau.

BURGLARS BUST WINDOW: Between 9:30 am and 3:42 pm Wednesday, someone used a rock to break a kitchen window in the 1600 block of SW Austin. They got away with a laptop, a video-game console, and jewelry.

MORE VIDEO-GAME CONSOLES STOLEN: Early Tuesday afternoon, a back door in the 7300 block of Dumar SW was pried open by burglar(s) who ransacked the residence and took a handgun, laptop, XBox, PlayStation, Wii, a purse, jewelry, and whiskey.

STOLEN WHILE SHE SLEPT: A woman living in the 3100 block of SW Spokane told police she awakened briefly around 3 am yesterday when she heard “the squeak of the front door opening.” A little while later, when she got up to use the bathroom, she realized her purse was gone. It contained a bank card, cell phone, dayplanner, and $160 cash.

LEAVING NOTHING BEHIND: Not only did two iPods get stolen out of an unlocked SUV in the 4000 block of SW 100th, the thief or thieves also took a pack of gum and what the police report describes as “a colorful rock.” This happened early last Saturday but wasn’t reported to police until this past Wednesday afternoon.

ADDING INSULT TO INJURY HERE TOO: Unusual loot also vanished in a car burglary reported Sunday — though it happened 2/28 or 2/29 — in the 8400 block of 26th SW. The victim told police that not only was a car stereo removed, so was a “crystal-like ball” that had been hanging from the rear-view mirror.

GARAGE BURGLARY: In the 8600 block of 10th SW, late Monday night or early Tuesday morning, someone jumped a fence to get into a detached garage and make off with a saw and cell phone.

As we always remind you – don’t hesitate to call police when you see or hear something suspicious, and of course when you believe a crime has been (or is being) committed. In addition to 911, there’s a non-emergency line at 206/625-5011. A big collection of Seattle Police crime-prevention resources is linked from the Southwest Precinct’s Crime Prevention page. Previous WSB police-report coverage is archived on our Crime Watch page.

This is the second time I’ve read of a home invasion resulting in a stolen gun. Please people lock your guns up.

Sorry, comment time is over.
