West Seattle Crime Watch: 1 arrested after Westwood stabbing

What was on the 911 log as an “aid response” – usually a minor-injury incident – early this morning turns out to have been a stabbing in the Westwood Village area, report Seattle Police:

Seattle Police and King County Deputies arrested a man Sunday who fled following a 4 AM stabbing … An employee of a restaurant in the 2500 block of SW Barton St. was attacked and stabbed twice, once in the chest and once in the head, before the 23-year-old suspect fled on foot.

A Seattle K-9 officer tracked the suspect toward an area in unincorporated King County and called King County Deputies for assistance. Deputy Cueva found the suspect at 25 Ave. SW and SW 100th St. where he was taken into custody without incident.

The employee suffered non-life threatening injuries and was treated and released at the scene. Officers located a four-inch folding blade knife at the scene. Officers have booked the suspect into King County Jail for investigation of Assault.

Oh my god…..what the hell is happening down here?

I am glad they caught this scumbag and the employee is ok.

While the SPD Blotter item in which this was announced does not ID the restaurant, we’re 99.9% sure it was McDonald’s, which is open 24 hours and so would have been open then: http://www.mcwashington.com/15338

Charged with assault? Why not charge him with attempted murder? I agree Smokey….scumbag!

You often see a pretty skeevy crowd hanging out in and around that place in the evenings and at night.

Between the bus stop across the way and this, it’s turning into a miniature 3rd & Pike.

I checked 911 incident report and looked up address Yes it was MacDonald’s

  • Matt May 11, 2015 (1:56 am)

They really need to have regular patrols around this area and others.

Also: Assault? That is ridiculous. That was BEYOND assault if someone got stabbed.

I don’t know why the MANAGEMENT at Westwood Village does not do a better job of security. University Village does not have these problems. Madison Marquette is the name of the property management company.

  • smokeycretin9 May 11, 2015 (8:57 am)

Maybe its time to tell Westwood Village that the public is tired of the street urchins and we wont shop at any of their retailers until they can clean up the trash?

  • DBurns May 11, 2015 (9:22 am)

Please feel free to contact the property manager at Westwood Village if you have concerns about security. His name is Andy Thompson and he is an awesome, long time West Seattle resident who cares very much for our community. (206.498-2864)
Our security service at WWV has been very attentive and effective, and has improved a lot over the years. We have been there over 8 years and have seen a solid increase in crime, and also in security. Blame the bus stops, the economy; whatever you think it may be, but please don’t take it out on the retailers. Empty stores are a much bigger problem for a community.
Please also note, as many are unaware, McDonald’s, Target, and the USPS are not actually part of Westwood Village – I know it seems odd but they are on their own property, and WWV management nor security has any impact on their decisions on how to operate their businesses.
SPD is on top of things in this area and we need to stick together and stay a strong community!

One reason U-village does not have the same problem is b/c it is immediately surrounded by different demographics.

  • Bradley May 11, 2015 (11:38 am)

Perhaps the main problem (besides the terrible bus stop and the lack of proper security) is the suspect being charged with assault instead of murder.

    • WSB May 11, 2015 (11:53 am)

We don’t have further details of the case beyond what SPD wrote up over the weekend. Assault versus attempted murder: To convict on the latter, it must be proven that the attacker intended to kill the victim. The victim in this case, according to SPD, didn’t even require hospitalization. (Of course, you CAN escape injury at all even if someone IS intending to kill you. Also, please note, what someone is booked for – investigation of assault – is NOT necessarily what they wind up being charged with. They might be charged with something more or less serious, or not at all. Police don’t file the charges; they just make the arrest and provide the evidence.)

I’m conflicted by Donna’s email. I definitely think she’s right, we need to shop there and keep it a vibrant place, yet I won’t even allow my family to walk there or go there after dark, due to the bus stop riff-raff. Clearly the transit center is the issue.

  • WestofJunction May 11, 2015 (2:32 pm)

Evergreen, you’ve got to be kidding – do you know how bad the U-District is?

  • ACG May 11, 2015 (6:38 pm)

WOJ- the U district (up the hill after the trestle) is a totally different neighborhood and environment compared to the Laurelhurst neighborhood where the U village is.

  • West Seattle Hipster May 11, 2015 (7:56 pm)

U-Village and U-District are very different demographically. Evergreen was on point.

    .

McDonalds should do the right thing and hire security. It seems that area has deteriorated since Metro dumped the bus rest area there.

  • joel May 11, 2015 (10:59 pm)

mcdonalds probably can’t afford security with paying $15 an hour…………………

it’s funny metro puts the bus stop there and creates a large part of the problem. then the tenants have to solve the problem. if the county is creating the problem then the county can have the Sheriff patrol the area.

    • WSB May 12, 2015 (12:15 am)

Joel, perhaps you’re joking, but since this bit of misinformation has continued to spread unabated, the “$15/hour law” is NOT requiring ANYONE to pay $15 currently and won’t be for several years. McDonald’s is required to pay $11 right now. Here’s the implementation timeline: http://www.seattle.gov/civilrights/labor-standards/minimum-wage

  • WestofJunction May 12, 2015 (6:00 am)

Evergreen & West Seattle Hipster – U Village is not in Laurelhurst. U Village is further from Laurelhurst than it is from the U District, which has a high crime rate, lots of transients, open drug dealing on the main streets.

  • heather May 12, 2015 (7:15 am)

I had no idea McDonalds, Target and USPS were not part of Westwood. Thanks for that info DBurns.

  • joel May 12, 2015 (7:47 am)

    wsb…it’s called ramp up!

  • joel May 12, 2015 (8:41 am)

all of those merchants create a lot of sales tax money – they should not have to rely on private security considering the tax base they contribute….

  • West Seattle Hipster May 12, 2015 (8:57 am)

Westofjunction, it was actually ACG who pointed out where the Ave was in comparison to U-Village. And ACG is correct, U-Village and the Ave aren’t as close in proximity as Laurelhurst is to U-Village. Check google maps out as a reference.

  • WestofJunction May 12, 2015 (10:17 am)

West Seattle Hipster- the U District abuts the University Village directly on the west side. Surrounding U Village on the west side are cheap apartments and rooming houses. Lots of transients, tagging drugs and gang activity. The Ave is smack in the middle of the U District – ACG needs to look at boundary to boundary distances, not boundary to landmark.

But what I see are poor excuses – tyranny of low expectations. The residential areas (and it is mainly residential) surrounding Westwood are nice – mostly well maintained middle class homes. Not much different than the homes in Bryant and Ravenna, the two neighborhoods that abut U Village from the north and east.

    +1 Bradley. The cycle continues.

  • Friend O'Dinghus May 12, 2015 (3:11 pm)

IMHO a stab wound to the head, and another to the chest, with a four inch folding blade, should reasonably be expected to cause death; planned by the perpetrator beforehand or not. Attempted murder very much sounds like an appropriate charge to me.

  • anonyme May 13, 2015 (8:52 am)

I personally don’t care if McDonald’s is on its own property or not. It is still part of the Westwood Village complex, and that area has indeed become a real problem. I work near there, and won’t go to McDonald’s any more due to transients and drug addicts camped out and nodding off in the restaurant. Recently I was menaced out of the restroom by a woman eager to shoot up. My last visit, someone approached my table and demanded my empty cup so that they could get freebies on drinks. I saw at least 3 people in that time frame walk in the door with ‘recycled’ cups and fill ‘er up.

A few months ago I found a 6″ dagger on the sidewalk down from Taco del Mar and turned it in to security. The bus hub is most of the problem, but a perfect storm of crime was created when Nickelsville closed about the same time the hub went in. There is always someone ‘posted’ at the bench entry to Roxhill Park. BTW,ALL of this has been reported either to security, management, or SPD depending on circumstances.

The McDonald’s is a “company” owned site which means its corporate and not locally-owned. Most McDonald’s recently raised their prices due to the increase in hourly rates. Maybe we should all contact the corporation in Chicago!

  • joel May 16, 2015 (9:35 am)

westwood village mcdonald’s appears to be a franchise owned location from a company in Tacoma. they are not owned by corporate McDonalds.

Sorry, comment time is over.
