West Seattle Crime Watch: 2 robbed at gunpoint on Fauntleroy

12:43 PM: Two people told police they were robbed at gunpoint on Fauntleroy Way last night, north of Lincoln Park. We’ve just obtained the police report. They told police they were walking northbound on Fauntleroy just before 10 pm after walking in Lincoln Park when “they were accosted by several males, one of whom brandished a black handgun, who demanded their money and belongings.” (The report mentions that police were dispatched to the 6600 block of Fauntleroy, but that is some distance from the park, so it’s not clear whether it happened there or whether they kept walking afterward.)

After taking a wallet, phone, iPod, and keys, the report says, the robbers jumped into a white minivan that had pulled up to get them and then sped off northbound on Fauntleroy. The van is described in the report as older, possibly 1980s, Chevy Astro type of van with stripes on the side and damage on the driver’s side appearing as if the vehicle had scraped against something, with scratches and dents resulting all along that side of the van. The robbers were described as about 17 years old, all males around 5’7″ to 5’8″. They didn’t get good descriptions of all of them but did describe the one with the gun as “black, slender, with a shaved head, red sweatshirt, and baggy blue jeans” and another one as “Hispanic or Latino, stockier build, wearing a dark tank top and light-colored pants.” The victims told police they believe they had seen the robbers in the park earlier and believe they might have been followed. If you have any information that could help find the robbers, please call police.

4:47 PM UPDATE: One of the victims has posted a comment, confirming it was indeed near Fauntleroy/Holly, and mentioning some of the items to be on the lookout for.

Glad to see the victims weren’t harmed. Can’t go for an evening walk…

Great description of the getaway vehicle. This one should be pretty easy to find if people keep their eyes out for it. Hopefully the police can use traffic cams to get more details.

I say they should set up stings throuout the summer in Lincoln Park to catch and keep the bastards out. I like to go there but between having cars broken into and people being robbed and attacked nearby even me, a woman from the Bronx, is going to think twice about walking in that park.We need to take back that park with the help of police

I do want to reiterate here – the police report does not say that the robbery happened in Lincoln Park. Doesn’t truly matter, of course, no one should be robbed anywhere and we all should be able to walk all streets/parks/etc. safely at all times. I am still trying to verify whether the 6600 block of Fauntleroy on the report – which is around Fauntleroy/Holly, not far from the turn into the Morgan Junction business district – was indeed the robbery location OR was where police spoke with the victims. Just for accuracy’s sake. – TR

Ridiculous. I feel much more safe when I’m in LA.

I hear about this happening all the time, why would people target people walking/running? They usually have very little if anything on them

The lt. in charge of robbery spoke at the recent West Seattle Crime Prevention Council meeting – he was there accompanying a Gang Unit detective since he’s also lt. of the Gang Unit, but addressed a few other things, as we wrote in our subsequent report – smartphones, iPods, etc., which are carried by many people on foot, are a BIG magnet for robbers/thieves – TR

You’re kidding! This is crazy. Should be easy enough to identify the pathetic losers though.

For a frame of reference, 6600 Fauntleroy is basically either behind Starbucks or behind Zeeks.

we heard 6 shots last night on Delridge, then a car sped off, any idea what that was all about?

  • MEJ May 8, 2013 (3:42 pm)

Gee, maybe if the SPD’s security cams had been activated by now, the thugs might already be in custody.

Are the stripes on the van thin and brown? Other?
It may be wishful thinking, but I swear I’ve seen a dented white, striped van around.

I was one of the victims.

The incident happened near the intersection of Holly and Fauntleroy. My friend and I were walking back to catch the bus at Faunt/Calif after taking a sunset walk in the park.

The 4 guys, who we had seen earlier in the park, jumped us from behind yelling at us that they would shoot us if we didn’t give them our stuff, waving the gun around in our faces and patting us down to make sure they hadn’t missed anything. Then the van sped over and they ran across the street and hopped in. I wish I could have gotten the plate number, but I was unable to. We knocked on doors after in the neighborhood until we found some nice souls who let us in and allowed us to call the police.

There were two wallets and two sets of keys stolen, along with a red bag, orange water bottle, ipod, and a flowered day planner. If anyone finds anything in the area, maybe WSB can let me know? I’d be happy to describe in further detail as needed.

MEJ– don’t think the security cams were ever going to be placed there- certainly not the 6600 block of Fauntleroy!!

  • DLH May 8, 2013 (4:41 pm)

Once the location is identified, I’d be curious if there is lighting at that location.

  • Yesterday May 8, 2013 (4:58 pm)

There was a street light. It was at the NW corner of Holly and Fauntleroy. We were just walking past the light pole on the corner when they came running up behind us.

Anne, the SPD’s security cams needn’t be wherever a crime occurs but rather at key choke-points so any vehicle coming or going from WS could be identified. Judging from the victims’ highly detailed description, this might have been a slam-dunk if the perps had driven past a choke-point in their haste to leave.

Glad to hear that no one was hurt.

  • bestbets May 9, 2013 (7:59 am)

As a person who has been held up at gunpoint before (years ago in LA), my heart goes out to the victims. Glad to hear they are okay.

  • Spitting Llama May 9, 2013 (9:53 am)

I’m so glad no one was killed, or maimed. I hope there’s some way these animals can be apprehended and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. If they’re that brazen – the next step in their criminal resume might be murder (if it’s not already).

  • MRS.SR May 9, 2013 (9:56 am)

There was wallet items found near there on Southern and CA.
The initials of the name on the items are SMN.

  • WSmom May 10, 2013 (3:23 pm)

Could be unrelated, but yesterday around 6:30pm in the parking lot of the new castle park I was approached by a young black man fitting the description and asked if I wanted to buy an iPod for $20….maybe I should have called the police. :(

  • Yesterday May 16, 2013 (11:38 am)

Thanks to all those good people who returned items to me, I was lucky to get most of wallet items back, sans cash. If anyone finds any keys (VW) randomly lying around your neighborhood, let me know. I’m still on the hunt for those!

Sorry, comment time is over.
