I’ve even asked the mail carrier what the best way is to indicate that I have mail to be picked up (since my box is on the side of the house, not at the street with a little flag). She indicated that I should put it in the box with the top sticking out. I did that…no pick up. Why?

guess you have to ask her. I’m in a small secure apt. bldg. and we leave mail simply stuck between the mailboxes, and they always take it.

I guess – I’m not usually around when they come by my house, though. I know I can just go to the post office, but it can be hard to find time. I was just wondering if anyone else has this problem, and whether there’s a way to communicate with the USPS about it. (Other than this:

My old carrier retired not long ago and she was awesome. Above and beyond. The new oneS, as they’re not often the same now, have still managed to pick up outgoing mail if I leave it half out of the slot with the uncancelled stamp showing. So I’m thankful for that.

3 for 3 so far. Hopefully that will continue.

Unfortunately, this is a crazy thing to do these days in single family residential areas, and mail theft is prevalent in West Seattle. My old carrier was awesome, as well. Now I don’t know who delivers my mail or when. Or if.

Over a year ago, I called the supervisor at the Westwood PO to find out why my outgoing mail was not picked up. The carrier had to pick up the outgoing as it was covering the slot for the security mailbox, insert new mail, then replace the outgoing over the slot – without taking it. The supervisor told me that carriers “do not pick up outgoing mail”.

I contacted the PO Headquarters in Washington D.C. to demand clarification of rules regarding residential mail pick up. They forwarded me somewhere else, and then I was forwarded again. All this took about a month, before I received an email stating that the issue should be handled by my local P.O. – the original source of the problem – and that I would be contacted within 48 hours by them.

That was over a year ago.

Anonyme, that’s very interesting. I see the WV post office has some pretty poor reviews online:

Update: after putting my outgoing mail in the box for four days straight, it was picked up. I know, I should have just taken it to work or to the post office, but I was curious to see if it would ever happen. Of course, someone other than the postal carrier may have picked it up, but good luck to them trying to cash my dentist’s co-pay.
