VanessaParticipantI know I should do them myself, but if I had the lot of them sharpened, I would be so much happier every night slicing and dicing and singing with supper. Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

jamminjMemberI always wondered about this. How often should they be done? I only have 1 ‘good’ knife, but sure isn’t as sharp as it once was.

ghar72ParticipantThere’s usually a guy at WS Farmers Market. I’ve never used him, but I’ve talked with him. Very nice. Pretty sure he does pruning scissors too. Sorry don’t know his price, but remember it seeming reasonable. Maybe $5/knife? It used to be you could take your knives to the meat dept at the grocery store and they’d sharpen for you. Not sure if that still happens or not.

CMPParticipantI took one of my knives to the Westwood QFC years ago and it was an odd experience. It was low priority and I swear they told me to come back an hour later (or maybe a day later??)…and the knife didn’t seem much sharper when I got it back. Makes me want to go buy a nice set with my own sharpening device, but I may have to check out the farmer’s market before making that investment! If I go on Sunday I’ll report back with more info.

HydrangeaMemberI believe you can get knives sharpened at the JF Henry kitchen/china store at the Junction.

cjboffoliParticipantI’ve used the guy at the WS Farmers Market. He IS a nice guy. But I think I made the mistake of bringing him too many knives at one time and it feels like he rushed it. I’ve checked with JF Henry too a while back and, if I recall correctly, they told me they have someone come in and do this on a certain schedule (once a month?). If anyone finds out and could follow-up here I’d be grateful as I need to have my knives sharpened again.

KatherineLParticipantA man comes to the West Seattle Nursery once a month and picks up knives, shears, pruners and loppers to sharpen. I’ve used him for years. He does a good job. I think it’s $5 a knife. He returns them by the weekend.
I used the man at the Farmers’ Market just once. The knife came back duller than it started. I haven’t tried him again.

mpentoParticipantI have been messing around with this for a while (mostly looking at YouTube videos but I bought a set of waterstones to play with) Unless you have some serious nicks in the blade you might just need to run over it with a honing steel a few times to straighten the edge. This is good practice to do fairly frequently depending on how often and how hard you use the knife. I got a nice ceramic honing rod that works well for regular maintenance. The quality of the knife is something to consider. If you have good quality knifes you DO NOT want to give them to some guy who uses a power grinder to sharpen garden tools. 99% of the time you do not want to create a new bevel on the edge and the heat generated by powered sharpener can do harm to the knife. I have not used a sharpening service but this guy was recommended to me. http://www.epicedge.com/shopcontent.asp?type=sharpening The shop is over in Kirkland if you ever want to see some expensive kitchen knives.

WS PersonParticipantCommercial sharpening company on 4th Ave S. I can’t remember their name off the top of my head. Barely a block south of Cash and Carry. They are awesome! 4 knives (2 lg, 2 pairing) $25. They do sharpening for restaurants, etc and sell knives as well. My knives were SHARP! Took a couple of days if I remember correctly.

biankatParticipantI’m thinking the same thing as mpento. It’s possible you just need a honer to straighten the edge.

bettytheyetiParticipantNella Cutlery Seattle, 1917 4th Avenue South 800-400-3658.
They sharpen many of downtown restaurants knives. If you have several knives then this is the place to sharpen. While you wait or come back in an hour. Yes this is the one mentioned by Wolfie. They also have the best prices on all kind of high end knives if you are shopping for them.
