charlabobParticipantI really value the hyperlocal focus of the news covered by the WSB — but I don’t agree with the notion of some forum posters that our discussions should be limited to the confines of our peninsular border.
What happens in Afghanistan or the Gulf of Mexico or Fremont (fire) often has a direct affect on folks who live in WS. There’s a difference between focus (good) and provincialism (imnho, bad). Once we chose to be part of the global political economy, we had to accept the idea that what “they” do impacts us.

TheHouseMemberI was affected last night on my evening commute. It took me almost 3 hours to drive from Union Street in Downtown Seattle to my house in WS yesterday afternoon. Although I had no idea what was going on at the time, I came home to find out that 23 people illegally were blocking 2nd Avenue. The ironic thing is that they were doing something illegally to support others that have entered the country illegally.
I was effected, not by their cause but by their actions.
In addition, Seattle Police Department handled the situation poorly. They allowed the issue to fester for hours and didn’t even make an effort to expedite traffic on parallel streets. A fantastic blunder by Seattle PD.

charlabobParticipantYou’re right, House — you were affected. I have a feeling that we’re not on the same side of the protest (though I’m not as sure as you might be), but this is a perfect example of what I’m talking about. And welcome back.

JanSParticipantHouse…I feel your pain…I remember being so inconvenienced by the tear gas during some of the riots in Wash, DC, in the late 60’s….
(sarcasm)..
but…yes, they really didn’t need to let yesterday’s action go on as long as it did. Civil disobedience is civil disobedience…they ended up in jail…maybe they should have a half hour earlier?

KenParticipantThe participants stated they wanted to be arrested. SPD should have expedited the process.
While the tactic is classic in some countries, it, along with the “general strike” are strategies that are gah-run-teed to not only fail in the USA, the backfire is now inevitable.
When I figured out that U4P&J were mostly anti-military rather than anti-war, I quit supporting or marching with them.
The One America org is now exposed as equally stupid as well as politically naive.

HolyKowMemberWe do have an area like that, and it is the Politics section (where you have posted this thread….) I have to admit posting to a Politics thread with a ‘how does this affect WS’, thinking it was listed in one of the WS only ones and I was wrong. I was reminded of that by DP and have made a note to let the WSB people do their job without my ‘help’.
Now, that being said, there is more happening in the world than politics, so perhaps a general watering hole section for the ‘whatever’ posts would be a good thought. However, the good peeps at WSB seem to have a great deal to do already, so it would eventually be up to them as to if they wanted to open’er up even more….
