My 16 year old electric water heater died. I need to replace it. There is a gas line right next to it going into the furnace. Should I replace the old water heater with another electric one or a gas water heater? Thanks for any thoughts.

I don’t know about comparing the two appliances but wanted to point out that not only do you need a gas line you need a gas line large enough for all the appliances on it. So that is the first thing you want to check there.

Although it wouldn’t be a big deal in most cases (unfinished basements) to redo the line in larger pipe as well.

We replaced our electric water heater six or seven years ago with a Takagi tankless gas water heater. I love it. It generates hot water only when you need it, and you never run out. It’s on the wall right next to our gas furnace, and I think a typical gas feed line was sufficient for both.

    Wow, 16 years!

Maybe you will want to do some research on tankless gas water heaters, if you go with gas. They are much spendier at the outset, but if you know you will be in the house for awhile, I believe you can still save a fair amount of money in the longterm for overall energy costs. I have a tankless: Aquastar by Bosch, purchased at McLendon’s in WC six years ago. I like it because it is small and hangs on a wall, freeing up quite a bit of floor space for other uses. There are different sizes available, based on the amount of water usage. Another great thing is that water does not get heated until it is needed and that is where,I think, some serious cost saving is.

    Good luck.
