While walking our dog today we encountered a portion of sidewalk outside of a bank on California Ave (near the Admiral intersection, across from Mud Bay and next door to Safeway) that was treated with some sort of de-icing chemical. Our dog started yelping seconds after his paws touched it. A nice man in the Safeway parking lot let us use a rag so we could wipe off his paws and that seemed to help.

I thought I’d share this with you pet owners out there who might want to avoid that spot and spare your dog the pain!

pbgirl1423: Lots of sidewalk de-ciers can be paw irritants. But even salt can be harmful, especially if your dogs lick their paws after a walk. It is probably not a bad idea to clean off your dog’s paws after you bring them inside after a walk.

I know, but this specific spot was horrible. It’s coated with a light blue rock salt…not the normal stuff I see on neighborhood sidewalks. It’s just a warning, not a lesson for myself :)

Wikipedia: “…rock salt…is typically colorless to yellow, but may also be light blue, dark blue, and pink depending on the amount and type of impurities.”

The entry doesn’t say what the impurity may be that makes the rock salt look light blue.

I’m lucky that my dog won’t get out in this stuff. He gets out to do his business, gives me this baleful look while he’s doing it and then rushes back inside as if to say “I dunno what this stuff is, mom, but I don’t like it.”

Anyone have a line on good dog boots (even home made ideas)? He’s itching for a walk but he’s also a wimp. Might help for those worried about de-icer too.

REI has several varieties of dog boots. Here’s a start:

The blue stuff is Icy Melt, the de-icer that Admiral Safeway got a shipment of. Since it is the only de-icer available, there will be a lot of it on Admiral area sidewalks.
