VCSinWSMemberA sweet 80-year-old living in West Seattle near High Point is desperate for a friendly visitor to help her stay living independently in her own apartment. She does have occasional help from volunteers, but is finding that she really need a visit once a week. Her wishes are simple: someone to help with some very light housework, laundry, and to check in on her and chat. A visit twice a month for an hour or two would be wonderful to help this dear senior in need.
Another senior woman lives alone in her apartment in West Seattle, also near High Point. She has bad knees, arthritis, and diabetes, uses a walker, and is on oxygen due to asthma and COPD. She’d like help with dusting, vacuuming, dishes, changing her bed, cleaning the bathroom and organizing. She just feels like she can’t keep up with it without hurting herself. She currently has a volunteer who takes her grocery shopping, but that volunteer is unable to help with housework. An hour or two a month is all it takes to help this woman feel safe in her own home.
Group project opportunity – adopt this West Seattle apartment building. A low-income apartment building in West Seattle near Morgan Junction houses several residents who are seniors, adults with disabilities, or are living with chronic illnesses. Would you like to volunteer with a group of friends or coworkers? Even three volunteers working together would be able to accomplish so much in just a couple of hours a month. The residents would be extremely grateful. This is an excellent opportunity for to interact with elders and disabled individuals while providing essential help to enable these members of our community to remain living independently in their homes. You may choose the day, time and location for your service. Call us to sign up as a group to make a difference. (We will provide training, insurance, tools, project coordination and support.)Great for service learning, or families to volunteer together.
Help with simple tasks like these can make a real difference in someone’s life.
Volunteer Chore Services, a program of Catholic Community Services, is a “safety net” for elders and adults living with disabilities who are alone in the world and are unable to pay for chore help. All recipients are low-income, have health problems or difficulty with mobility, and most live alone.
We carefully match volunteers to opportunities based on their personalities, neighborhood, and preferences.
There are unfortunately a huge number of people waiting for help, and a shortage of volunteers. As the budgets for human services are in trouble all over the country, programs like Volunteer Chore Services are essential to help our most vulnerable citizens. Volunteers are needed all over Seattle and South King County, but especially in areas like West Seattle.
For more information on how you can help in West Seattle, please call Kerrie Carbary, the volunteer coordinator in your area, at 206-328-6858, Volunteer Chore Services main intake line at 206-328-5787, or email kerriec@ccsww.org.
Thank you. :)
