ospreygirlParticipantHello West Seattle Community,
I’ve set up this on-line petition to urge Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) to seriously consider an immersed tube tunnel (ITT) similar to the system that supports BART and many other underwater thoroughfares worldwide. Per a presentation from local engineers, the ITT solution has numerous benefits including lower cost, faster construction, a good safety record, longevity, and earthquake resilience.
From what I understand, SDOT is focused on repair or replacement of the bridge and may have “tunnel vision†– pun intended! It’s unclear what political and business pressures will influence a decision; we must avoid another lengthy, costly bridge option unless it’s the only solution. Proper evaluation of an ITT requires SDOT to bring in outside experts and think outside of the box. We MUST keep up the pressure on them!
On September 27th, I will submit this petition to our Councilwoman Lisa Herbold who can bring our collective voice to the SDOT bridge replacement task force of which she is a member.
Petition to SDOT – DEADLINE SEPT 26
If you want to learn about the ITT, here is some information from the local engineer who has done much analysis of this option.
Thank you for your interest and support!

snaParticipantThey already are seriously vetting an ITT tunnel. It’s one of the formal options under consideration along with the other repair and replace solutions. Personally, I think it’s a terrible idea for many reasons.

JoblessFutureParticipantDon’t build any bridges to W.Seattle, save the money and fund the police.
Less traffic, less crime, quiet and make W Seattle a Paradise island full of coconut and palm trees.September 10, 2020 at 6:08 pm #987487
peelandpresswsParticipantHi, I am a member of the CTF and I can tell you they are fully vetting the tunnel. It is one of the replacement options being considered in the CBA. They added an extra 250k to the process to ensure it was fully vetted even though it is something that should be looked at during the ‘size, scope, location” discussion that happens after the CBA. They moved it up to calm peoples fears of it being left out and put a quarter million dollars down to back that move. Whoever told you it wasn’t being consider hasn’t been closely following the project.

ospreygirlParticipantThanks for the responses! The info I received must have been dated. Glad to know that they are seriously vetting it.
