So, with all the talk about White Center recently and the mention of a new owner at the Triangle, I thought I’d finally give it a try (I’ve been eyeing if for years now). Four friends and I showed up last Friday night around 10pm and were greeted with thumping hip-hop music from about a block away. Once inside, we had to yell in each other’s ears to decide whether to bail or stay. Basically, not being able to talk it over, we all sat down at the only available table that could accomodate all of us – the place is fairly small.

The staff was friendly enough and they have Manny’s on tap (Georgetown’s own). They had a great deal going on where you received two free Manny’s pint glasses if you ordered a pitcher. I also confirmed that t-shirts emblazoned with the “Living the Dream….In White Center” tagline were for sale (not sure about the price).

After getting our beer and sitting down, I surveyed the room. I realized that despite the eardrum rattling hip-hop playing there was a karaoke host over in the corner. A couple of patrons got up and served up horrendous versions of classic rock songs. It was a relief, though, as the music was turned way down for the karaoke performances – we could actually hear each other without shouting.

As for the clientele, a social worker in our group pointed out that the 15 year old girl sitting at the table next to us was a prostitute. Her pimp was sitting at the table as well handing her shots of liquor. The girl looked like she was on the verge of tears. They left shortly after she had downed her shots. Very sad. The rest of the clientele looked like your average hardcore alcoholics. Most seemed to be having an ok time and were non-threatening. Actually, no one spoke to us at all.

The pub itself was pretty clean and well lit. It definitely isn’t a dump and could appeal to a broader clientele than simply the average White Center drunk. As we left for the night, a guy on the sidewalk said, “Come back soon.” I assumed this was the owner.

My recommendation: don’t allow 15 year old prostitutes to drink at your bar. Try carding people and maybe not serving those that already sauced. Believe me, I know many people in White Center and south WS that would love to find a local bar to hang out at. The Triangle could be that bar, but not based on Friday night’s experience.

Anyone else have a better tale to tell?

Ever since the closure of the Pacific Rim Brewery, (RIP!) there has been a hole in W.C. for normal folk to get a beer and a burger.

I have been to the Triangle a few times ( living within crawling distance ), it is clean and well lit, but alas you are right, the folks that were there were unfriendly, almost like we were INVADING their hangout.

It really could be a great place , I am willing to give it another shot.

I vowed not to post on this forum again, but here goes.

In 1996, I lived in the building above Cafe Rozella. (Where cafe Rozella is now, there was a Samoan grocery store and a Vietnamese video store.) Chubby & Tubby was still on the corner.

One night, bored and still excited about being able to go into bars (I was only 22) I decided to walk to the nearest bar- the Triangle. I walked in and the 5 or 6 people in there stopped talking and stared at me. They were all old alcoholics, and here I was this fresh-faced little kid coming into their bar. These looked like some dangerous folks – (every one of them white, lest someone think I am re-fueling the WC race debate) I bravely sat down at the bar. The smell of urine wafting from the men’s room was overpowering, but it was the only seat. I ordered a $.75 Rainier, drank it down as quick as I could. No one spoke to me, but there were a lot of stares. I finished and walked the 1/2 block home, looking behind me the whole way to make sure I wasn’t being followed.

When I went to work the next day, I told my boss what I had done. He got a very serious look on his face and said “I don’t want to EVER hear about you going in that bar by yourself again- you hear me?”

I don’t mean this to contribute to whatever seems to be bothering you about the forum, JenV, and I sympathize with your experience back then, but 1996, really? I’m with Todd – willing to give it a try. Love Manny’s (although $.75 Rainiers – or better yet, Luckys in the bottle) might get me there too!

GHO- I was simply sharing a story about the Triangle and my memorable experience there. It sounds like it hasn’t changed much, but now that I am one of the old alcoholics….maybe I should give it another try. Although if there is karaoke, I am walking right back out the door. ;)

I am really disturbed by the scene described by villagegreen above about the 15 year old prostitute. Why didn’t anyone call the police? Am I naive or is it somehow OK for an adult to give a child liquor (in a bar no less) so she gets intoxicated and then raped all night long? Ugh.

Maybe we should try a meetup there. I didn’t get to go to the BPP happy hour and I definitely wanted to meet all you peoples. Plus the Triangle is “crawling distance” to me too! Todd, Socl, Aim, I think you’re all close to White Center, would you be down? Villagegreen, GenHillOne, JenV, could we tempt you out again?

    #628755

If I can ever face a beer again, I would be happy to. Are the beers less than 10% alcohol there? BPP kicked my butt.

Two Manny’s glasses with a pitcher is cool, normally they’re $2 each from the brewery.

socl…you can have…umm…coke – lol…there is no requirement ever to have a few drinks. You could just wear a sign saying ” designated driver” – lol…bet they’d pay for your non-alcoholic drinks, too….and maybe a meet-up would show the owners that there’s a big world out there, and derelicts don’t have to be the only clientele…

    just old alcoholics ;-)

and, by the way, I agree…seeing a 15 yo girl in a bar being plied with alcohol is a scene that I don’t want to see…have cell phone in hand…we should NOT be afraid to get involved…it can be anonymous..

The Rim is reopening July first as Big Al’s Brewery. I keep teasing him that it reminds me of Big Gay Al’s Big Gay Boat Ride. He finds little humour in that.

The Triangle is a great bar except for Friday nights. That is Karaoke night. And the woman who runs that always, always turns it to 11. Mac is the owner. Big barrel chested fellow. I think if enough people point out that it is just to damm loud he will listen.

I would so be into a meet up there.

    I think this sounds great!

We probably wouldn’t want to go on a Friday, due to the Karaoke. Would everyone be up to meeting on a Saturday?

Which Saturday works best for everyone???

I know nuthin’ about dlisted.com, nor do I know much about beer. And, I am older than 30-something. But, I DO know I would like to meet you all. Good for you guys for checking the pub out as the possible South Delridge neighborhood pub.

And, I think JanS makes a very good point about how to address particular kinds of lingering unsavories, btw. But, I have to say when I was in there during the day, I had no weird vibe from anyone in or around there. However, there was no one in there! They need day traffic too!!

I picked up the menu on my own reconnaisance walk-through. Seems that the pub’s kitchen is open until 1:00 AM. And, it open’s at 11:00 am, so folks could try lunch there. Now, I have NOT tried the food, but it is a fairly extensive sandwich menu of classic, artery-clogging pub food – including reubens and philly cheese steaks!!!But, they do have few salads listed. What more could folks possible want? Aside from a 4-7 Happy Hour with specials, I mean.

You build the meetup there and I will try to make it.

We walked by the pub last night and saw folks outside wearing the “Living the Dream” t-shirts! I’ve really missed Pac Rim, so it would also be fun to go to Big Gay Al’s New BrewPub. But first things first! Next Saturday is right after the forth, are people around then?

Hey all. We’ll be moved over by then and are game. We used to frequent the dive bars in Portland pretty often and are not afraid. If I see a 15 year old prostitute, however, that’d be rough.

    ellenator…

if we see any underage person in the bar we will be informing the management and dialing 911 after taking a pic with our cell phones because we are very good citizens.

So, is it decided that the get-together is the Saturday after the 4th?

    What time is everyone thinking?

I have been wanting to check it out after reading the review in The Seattle Weekly http://www.seattleweekly.com/2008-05-14/food/white-center-s-true-burger-giant.php

    #628771

I’ll be there. And if I see a child “working” in there, I d*** sure will be calling police (and giving the child my card, if I can find a way not to jeopardize her safety).

The other thought is she is older than she looks, and then I am still going to give her my card. (Cuz I am a meddler, perhaps?)

It’s a great review. And I like dives, although I had better stick to one beer. :)
