SHORT STORY: BEWARE of middle-aged man lurking around, approaching anyone he encounters and yelling obscenities (racial slurs, derogatory words) around the Holy Rosary neighborhood! He appears unstable and as of today, very dangerous.

He repeatedly makes his rounds throughout the morning, day and night.

While the neighborhood has seen and encountered him before in the past few months, his frequency is increasing, as is his aggression.

LONG STORY: I am writing this warning because just tonight around 5:00 pm I had a fearful run-in with him. I had seen and heard him throughout the day, and thankfully my guard was up as I had just been hearing him what sounded like banging on cars down 41st, off Dakota.

He aggressively approached as I was going from my alley gate to my car parked in front of my garage. As I closed my gate, he quickened his pace coming off Dakota, coming at me, yelling obscenities I can’t repeat here but also saying, “I’m going to shred you.” I didn’t turn around and quickly got in my car and locked the door, to find him already at the trunk. He had (again, he did it just 30 minutes earlier and I put it back) ripped out something in the ground on our property, and was yelling at me in the car and waving the object, before he threw it. Worried he was going to break my window in but also not wanting to aggravate him more by nearly running him over to back up, I let the car roll and thankfully the movement got him also to meander on.

He continued down the alley, screaming about me, approaching the neighbor’s fence and then fiddling with their garage. I reversed and watched him continue to wander around, yelling.

He was wearing a black t-shirt with a white graphic on it, a grey sweatshirt with the hood up, black gloves with white skeletons on the tops of the hands and a small duffle like bag.

I moved my car to the front of my house and as I was totally shaken, went to the neighbors house to calm down. I did call the police, but not soon enough. Police said if he returns to call immediately.

Well, he returned just an hour or so later, harassing another neighbor woman when thankfully the same neighbor I ran to after my incident came out to try and protect her and take a picture of him. He quickly fled to the Holy Rosary playground.

BEWARE EVERYONE, BUT ESPECIALLY WOMEN AND CHILDREN!

He’s been seen before lurking around, watching young girls at the playground. I also believe this is the same person who tried to break into my front door in the early evening, with all my lights on, almost this same time last year, because the suspect who did that was talking aggressively under his breath, had the same shuffle/schlep and that incident had an eerily similar feeling to today’s.

CALL THE POLICE IF YOU SEE HIM.

Dear CJPH, this sounds horrible and very frightening. I hope there has been some resolve to this situation. I am so sorry this has happened to you and you neighbors. What have the police said?

    Hi CJPH,

I’m really sorry this happened to you, so scary. I’m your neighbor a few doors down and there was a lot of activity today related to this same guy. I can’t find anything anywhere about what happened today and if this guy is off the streets. Do you have any information? Please feel free to stop by (blue house w/ big front windows- would love to meet more of our neighbors anyway) or email me. taylorl387@gmail.com.

What color hair did he have? Any distinguishable features?

I swear I’m thinking about buying a taser or something. Even going thru an area of the Seattle Center recently, there was a man jumping and yelling at someone in his head, and stopping and looking up at the people around him. What would I do, if he became physically aggressive to me or my friends? So here in W.S. we have someone, who sounds like a ticking time bomb ready to explode. It is a shame, that we have become so politically paranoid, that we/they can’t describe this person in a little more detail. TonyPosse, you’re being so polite in trying to ask, what the heck does this guy look like? Black white blue green, old, young, I don’t care, but he needs a description. I frequent this area many times thru the week. And what DO the police do? Does he physically have to do personal or property damage before he is picked up and assessed?

    Hi CJPH,

I believe this man lives in one of the houses that face 41st. I sometimes hear him in the yard yelling during the summer. I also had an encounter with him by myself for the first time recently and he was non-confrontational. But this Sunday I was with my family and he was screaming as you described it and we just hurried away. Not sure what else to do but to talk to his caretaker…

I’m just curious, why is no one actually giving a description of the man besides his behavior on this post? My children attend Holy Rosary and they have sent a letter simply stating that he is a middle aged man. My children walk to and from school by themselves as we are only 2 blocks away. We have told them to switch up their paths and we have talked to them about safety, but we both work and can not be there to always walk them.
Also, if this man is mentally disturbed, has a care taker, aren’t there laws that should keep him from living so close to several schools? Are the police not aware of where he lives if people already know this much? Does he actually have to physically threaten, harm, assault, expose to our children??

It does sound like the middle-aged guy that lives with his elderly mother on 41st. I wonder if the police know about him?

Hello all! My apologies, I didn’t see these replies!!!

The man appears to be in his 50’s, maybe 60’s, but I can’t tell if this is because he’s had a rough life or really is older. Looks like he has scraggly, grey hair coming down under the ball cap he’s usually wearing. He’s caucasian. Most distinguishable ‘feature’ would be his raspy, sometimes deep (seems to get more pronounced the more worked up he is) aggressive voice/tone. He also has a very specific ‘schlep’ or cadence, quick but with one foot sometimes really dragging. His face has an aggressive, upset scowl to it.

As for who specifically it is, I’ve heard from another neighbor that he thinks he lives down on 41st, but since I run around here all the time, I can’t really envision which house that would be, I guess I’ll have to pay more attention next time I circle down there. I’ve also never seen him close or lingering near a house enough to even think he could belong there.

The police said there was nothing they could do if he didn’t have a weapon, which I’ve since learned I should have just said that yes, he indeed did have a weapon when he came at me: he was using the metal end of my security sign as the object he seemingly was going to ‘shred’ me with. In shock, when the police asked if he had a weapon on the phone, I didn’t see a gun or knife or anything, but in hindsight, a weapon could be anything and I should have said yes, then they could have responded.

Since this has happened (Friday, October 26th) he returned for rounds later that evening as I mentioned, and apparently was around the following week (this past week) quite a bit, specifically Monday and Tuesday. In fact, my neighbor who I ran to when it happened (lives across the way from me) called me on Tuesday morning to let me know that the man was out and about being pretty active and to be careful. He also said that while he was out keeping an eye on him, he got pretty aggressive so he took a video of him. Then, one of the mom’s sitting in her car which was parked right in front of our houses rolled down her window and said she and some of the other moms were really nervous because they’d seen him around and were getting worried and wanted to know who he was. Also, that she was calling the police to report him since he’s lingering around a school so much. My neighbor called me again to know that police were finally scouting the area looking for him so I should find some comfort in the fact that they’re aware and acting.

Around 2pm on that Tuesday, October 30th, I was coming down Dakota and saw a police car turn from 41st, left onto Dakota, then left down the/my alley where the Holy Rosary drop off happens, then back down Dakota and back down 41st. I paused at the top of 41st and Dakota and saw 3-4 officers near the end of street, so I drove down. Got long looks from them as I drove by and saw the man handcuffed and sitting on the ground. He was talking to the cops the cops looked humored/annoyed. I thought about pulling over, or just rolling down the window recount what happened with me and him, but I didn’t. Wish now that I had.

Anyhow, I don’t know what came of that, if they arrested him or what. And I haven’t seen him around. Anyone else know more?

Also, I’m sure I’ve dropped enough info for you to figure out where I’m at, so if you see me, please say hello or don’t hesitate to even come knock to introduce (most the HR kids don’t even knock anymore to go retrieve their balls from the backyard, ;). I was going to go chat with Dave the playground attendant, and also the HR principle on Monday just share my experience and see if there’s any news as well.

Hoping we can keep our neighborhood as safe as possible, all! Thanks for all your responses and please update if you know more.

Mentally ill people have the same rights as anyone else, KVK. This man can live where he wants and walk the street just like you. He can live near a school and walk by it with no fear of legal repercussion unless he’s a sex offender with restrictions attached to his release.

West Seattle Crime Watch: About the Holy Rosary-area harassment situation

What I don’t know and will attempt to find out tomorrow (though without a name, it’s almost impossible) is whether there is a warrant out for the man as a result of his walkaway. – TR
