HunterGParticipantWhat happened to all of them? I hope the city isn’t exterminating them…(though I know some refer to them as “tree rats”) I love those little guys!
I used to see up to 15+ on a nice sunny day like today around 6pm. Today, and the last handful of times I was lucky to see two of them.
Anyone have any insider information?

CaitParticipantAnd to borrow a question from David Sedaris – why is it that you never see baby squirrels?
I think they may be scared off those off leash dogs *starts the fire and then backs out of the forum slowly* Just kidding.
No honestly, could it be the time of year?

hollyplaceParticipantone helped itself to our pirate’s booty the other day.

guidosmomMemberMaybe it’s because my Jack Russell Terriers live closer to Lincoln Park now. They are always on leash, and of course have never caught any, but do show too much interest. I have noticed more squirrels at Camp Long, so maybe they moved.

flowerpetalMemberBaby squirrels stay in the nest for 7-10 weeks until they are weaned. As weaning proceeds you might see them hanging out near the nest if you know where the nest is. By the time they are fully weaned they look so similar to adults that we don’t know the difference.
Pretty much the same reason we don’t see young pigeons. They stay close to home until they look like adults.

transplantellaParticipantThey all moved down the block to the Kenney!
Squirrel heaven there. Multiple feeders, walnut trees across the street, little old ladies sporting bags of peanuts.
They’re all at the Kenney, see them there. :)

HunterGParticipantI hope they move from there before construction begins! :)

miwsParticipantI’m heading down to Lincoln Park in a few minutes.
I’ll try to look for squirrels while there, and report back.
I walk through there a few times a month, and recall seeing one squirrel on a fairly recent vist.

JoBParticipantThe shiba kids never fail to find squirrels at Lincoln Park.
I swear those squirrels are educated. they know what a leash is and exactly how long it is. They tease the dogs out to the end of the leash and then sit there and chitter at them..
everyone seems to enjoy the game.

miwsParticipantOkay, I just got back.
Thought I was going to end up reporting negative on the squirrel sightings, but towards the end of the Lincoln Park portion of the walk, I literally almost tripped over one zipping across the path in the west side of the upper park, that is along the cliff, overlooking the water.
I was towards the north end of the trail in the area near the northernmost picnic shelter, almost to the Parks Dept maintenance area.
I was looking a bit off to one side, and redirected my gaze to back ahead of me, just in time to see in my lower periphereal vision, the little guy zipping across in front of me, kind of at an angle, so he was actually getting closer to me as he ran across. I stopped dead for a second or two, because I was a bit startled and didn’t want to kick him!
Now considering he was trying to trip me, and kill me, I didn’t tell him about the little old ladies and their bags of peanuts at the Kenney. ;-)
Of course, I’m sure he went back and told all of his buddies about this big human scary guy that was trying to kick him and kill him.;-)
Another cool thing I saw, was as I was taking a quick catch the breath break, on one of the benches in the upper park near the south end, overlooking the water, a little bird zipped by. It took me a moment to relize it had to be a hummingbird. Of course I know what they look like, but this was so quick, all that registered in my brain, was the quick movement, and a little “chirp”.
I didn’t hear the hum of the wings, or see the long beak. My first thought was “dang that bird moved fast!” Then it dawned on me that it had to be a hummingbird.

JiggersMemberWhat construction Hunter?: All the off leash dogs run after them and scare them away. The squirrels are very tame at Lincoln Park. I had several approach me and I fed them some bread from my sandwhich right out of my hands. Don’t blame me for theme not being scared of humans. If they come up to me then a lot of other folks feed them too.

flowerpetalMemberIf they have moved to the Kenney, that would be the upcoming construction that Hunter is referring to.
Squirrel tastes good and makes a good brown gravy; but don’t blame me if they are scared of humans.

miwsParticipantflowerpetal, I had a similar thought come to mind.
Perhaps those sweet little old ladies, with their bags of peanuts, have some kind of ulterior motive! ;-)

flowerpetalMemberI was sorta serious. Squirrel is good eating… really! Of course I wouldn’t go a-hunting for squirrel on park property.
It is a disturbing picture; a lady with a bag-o-peanuts scooping up squirrels and bonking them on their head. I don’t want to carry that into dreamland tonight.
May 23, 2009 at 5:20 am #667335
JoBParticipantlast time i was there it was a little old man who was feeding the squirrels:)

JeannieParticipantThanks for your squirrel report, Mike! I saw one yesterday in Lincoln Park. Hope you also checked out the ducky Memorial Day tribute.

HunterGParticipantThanks everyone for your reports, it eases my mind! I was worried!!!
May 23, 2009 at 11:33 pm #667338
miwsParticipantJeannie, I certainly did!
The Duckie Reserve is one of my big incentives for taking these walks, besides the natural beauty of the park itself. :-)
