This morning while pulling up to a stop sign at 49th SW and Hudson, a black and white tuxedo cat ran directly under the wheels of our moving vehicle, being chased by another cat. We stopped as did others on the road to see if we could do something, but the kitten died quickly. We were unable to locate an owner in the area and the cat had no collar.

We can only say to the owners how awful we feel about this, being pet people ourselves, but can let them know that their pet did not die alone. Some wonderful women petted and soothed the kitten as it was passing. Another woman came out of her house and provided a box and cover.

We reported the incident to Animal control and they are on the way to pick up the box. Many thanks to the wonderful women who took the time to stop and offer aid and comfort. The West Seattle community really is extraordinary.

This is an all-too-familiar scenario. Often the driver is blamed when, in fact, it is solely the owner who is at fault. I have no sympathy for the humans who allowed and enabled this senseless waste of life. It’s the animal that suffers, the animal that dies a violent and unnecessary death. Cats need to be indoor only.

Maybe no humans “allowed and enabled this senseless waste of life.” For the Pets page, we get multiple reports weekly of cats getting out, and while I have had indoor cats all my life, also believing personally that they should live inside, a couple of them got out because of somebody’s unintentional mistake (at least once, it was mine, 25 years ago, when I forgot to slide the window closed before going out for a bit, and my beloved cat Ariel tore through the screen, something I’d never seen her even try to do – we looked around for hours, finally took a tearful break, and she came back in through the screen hole with a “present” for me, a bug).

Our current cat shows no interest in even trying to so much as approach the door, but I have seen others that are relentless in their attempts.

Please, after such a kind and caring post, don’t throw in angry assumptions. Thanks – TR
