yikesMemberI just wanted to give a shout out to our very own Derby Brats, who performed last night at the Rat City Roller Girls half time at Key Arena.
The Derby Brats were formed from a group of girls at Pathfinder School in West Seattle. They are incredibly dedicated to this difficult and challenging sport. The girls are between 11 and 17 and fully support themselves through donations and fund raising. They had a 50/50 raffle last night that raised $1,000 for the team and $1,000 for the lucky winner at the Key Arena.
If anyone is interested in supporting the team, they are having a Spaghetti feed later this month… this money will go towards setting up Derby bouts with other teams in the Northwest.

soclwrkrinmotnMemberKeep us in the loop! I have co-workers who are in the adult leagues, so….

AimParticipantThis is AWESOME. I would love to support something like this that helps girls grow up confident and strong. Please keep us posted.

WSBKeymasterI thought we had pretty good contacts at Pathfinder but didn’t know about that one – would have covered it :( if anyone has a photo (or if you’ve uploaded video to YouTube or something), please share!

rockhillsMemberMissed the Derby Brats last night but saw the Tootsie Rollers (the younger kids) and learned about a new sport: ‘flag derby.’ What a great opportunity for the girls!

HMC RichParticipantMy wife and I were curious about how appropriate the Rat City Roller Girls bouts were. I wanted to take my son last night (that was my excuse. I just wanted to go) but she was uncertain.
I watched Roller Derby on TV as a kid living in Wisconsin and loved it.
Since there is involvement through Pathfinder I am thinking it is OK?
Let me know please, and what night is the Spaghetti feed?
March 9, 2009 at 3:53 am #659882
AimParticipantRich I have a friend who is a roller girl. Do you want me to find out what she thinks? How old is your son?
March 9, 2009 at 4:15 am #659883
AnonymousInactiveShout out to Derby Brat Audrey headburn!
Rich, there are lots of families there. There is even a younger group of skaters, the Tootsie Rollers, age 6-10. I don’t know about the set up in Key Arena but in the past, at their last venue, there was an adult only section were you could purchase alcohol. And of course it’s kind of a loud sport, but I don’t think offensive or inappropriate for kids at all.

HMC RichParticipantAIM and JT, Thanks for the info and for checking it out. Our little guy is 2.5 years old.
March 9, 2009 at 4:28 pm #659885
squareeyesParticipant2.5 years old might be a bit young for the derby just from an attention standpoint. The whole event runs from 5:30-9:30pm. There are two 60-minute matches with a half-time show (last month belly dancers, this month Tootsie Rollers/Derby Brats) in each match and a warm-up period between matches for the second skaters. We found that staying for one match was just about right.
There isn’t any inappropriate language, the costumes/uniforms could be considered slightly risque by some.
This isn’t your 1970’s roller derby. It’s a flat track, and many 70’s style moves are off limits for safety reasons.
Key Arena was woefully unprepared last month for their first hosting of the derby from a ticket sales and concessions standpoint, but really came to the party this month with increased staff and several concession stands open. Kudos to the Key for the improvements. Tickets are cheaper if bought in advance – $20 advance/$25ish at the door.
It’s a great time!

JoBParticipantyikes…

i am all for any sport that gets girls moving… and derby skating is a lot safer than some…
March 10, 2009 at 3:00 am #659887
yikesMemberThanks everyone for the support of our Derby Brats. I’ve been trying to attach some pics and I can’t figure out how! I can copy, but it won’t paste. I know it’s the operator LOL!
I remember derby when I was young.. it was kind of like WWF… and now it’s far more focussed on the skill of the sport than the antics. But it is still really exciting because it’s real.
Our spaghetti feed is on the 27th and I’ll send the details when I get them. My daughter and derby girl, Kelly Kim Reaper, will be selling them. Thanks!
March 10, 2009 at 3:28 am #659888
yikesMemberUpdate! The Spaghetti feed is on March 28, not 27. It will be at St John the Baptist hall on 3050 Califonia Ave SW at 5pm. It’s $8 for a great feed!
If you would like tickets, Kelly Kim Reaper is selling and you can let me know through the forum. Thanks
March 28, 2009 at 3:40 pm #659889
JoBParticipantYikes…

March 28, 2009 at 9:37 pm #659890

charlabobParticipantI’m really sorry I missed it — still trying to get granddaughter involved. Sorry for the meta message: If you’re trying to get in touch with me, phone please. My laptop died and my connectivity is erratic. For once, I’m not the flake — my computer is. (Ken, I need you!) “-_
