Considering a refinance and curious if anyone that has done so recently has found a reputable good deal, i.e., low interest rate and low closing costs from a firm that can be trusted for a 30-year fixed. Thanks!

I’ve been in touch with most of the major refi institutions and am getting information that’s about the same. Discover seems to have a pretty good deal for 30 year fixed. Rates in the 3% area, fixed closing costs that you can add on and you only pay out of pocket for an appraisal.

I’d be interested in hearing about better deals if anyone has run across them.

We have had major issues with our lender in the loan to value area – even though we have excellent credit and a perfect payment history… The foreclosures and short sales in the area have affected our current value. Anyone else getting turned away – after paying application fees?

Susan, Have you looked into doing a HARP loan (when you owe more than your home is valued at)? We’re in the processing of a HARP refi with Umpqua Bank. A 3.5% rate, fees under $1000 (can be rolled into loan), no appraisal needed. The person we’re using is Matt Mallory, out of Portland. 503.601.6742. My parents in OR refinanced with him and that’s how I connected with him.

Here’s info about the HARP program: http://www.harpprogram.org/about.php

PenFed – a web company did an excellent job for us.

You might check the local credit unions. I moved my mortgage to BECU last year at 3.65%, no fees. Anyone can join BECU. No complaints so far and it got me out of BoA!

Also wanted to mention Rhonda Porter, she’s a WSB sponsor. Here’s an older thread, but she talks a bit about herself on it. https://westseattleblog.com/forum/topic/mortgage-brokers

I contacted her to do our refi, but we have Lender Paid Mortgage Insurance (LPMI) on our current loan and she’s not working with any banks that will do a loan like that. She was very helpful and I wish we could have worked with her. Her website is VERY informative and educational. http://www.mortgageporter.com/
