kParticipantI think we can all rave about the stunner of a day we had today. My rant is that Alki was already overrun with riff raff today. Between nearly being run down by motorcycles doing wheelies and low riders cruising back and forth, it was just a reminder that I still prefer Alki when it’s cloudy and raining and it belongs to all of us who live here.

alki_2008ParticipantI think that “belongs to all of us who live here” is a bit pretentious and absurd. The entire city/county/state pay to maintain the beach and the streets that Alki residents use. Do you really think that Alki beach is only for those that live here? Do you think it would be as great a place as it is if only residents were here? If Alki residents were the only people patronizing the shops and restaurants, then they wouldn’t survive and would close…or maybe they’d just have to charge a whole lot more than they already do.
That being said, non-residents of Alki that come here should be considerate enough to not disturb the enjoyment of others. They should follow the laws and drive safely.

kParticipantalki_2008-i didn’t mean to say no one else could enoy alki. i just wish others would respect it and respect those who do happen to live there year round. i have learned, yet again, that someone will always take what you write to the extreme.

ToddinWestwoodMemberBeing a West Seattle motorcyclist, I avoid Alki like the plague on nice days, because of the wheelie crowd and “loud pipes save lives” American made crowd.
Everyone who goes down there is there to be seen or heard. A bit more police would be nice as a bit more consideration from visitors from outside W.S.

HammertreeMemberIf you live here, go early!

jellyfishMemberI agree, Alki can become really ghetto when the weather warms up.

alki_2008Participantsorry K — but your statement that “and it belongs to all of us who live here” sounded like we (alki residents) OWN the beach and the area.
I do know what you mean about comments being taken to the extreme. :-(

SueParticipantIt’s always interesting how people read something differently on message boards. I read k’s comments as meaning “when the crowds die down and only the WS residents show up” – not that it “belongs” only to alki residents. I rarely go to Alki in good weather just because it’s too crowded and I don’t want to fight for parking. I work a few blocks from Pike Place Market and feel the same way about it – I love going in winter when the crowds are gone.

JiggersMemberI moved to West Seattle fifteen years ago. I used to love to hit Alki Beach on the weekends. I haven’t been there during summertime in the last three years. It is way too crowded with punk kids and thugs hanging out spewing their no-common sense attitude. If I go, it is during the early afternoon on a weekday when it’s empty. Traffic on a Saturday afternoon is the pits driving thru Alki. I know why you want to live there because it’s a status symbol. Forget that. I prefer to live somewhere simple.

JoBParticipantHammertree is right…

i miss Alki in the summer when it is clogged with people…

velo_nutParticipantBefore you posted your rant did you voice your complaint to the management of Alki?
Don’t look at me… forum rules ;-)
