JoBParticipanttsunaminw…
“I think animosity only begins to show itself when you have to say something for the tenth time. Even Ghandi and Jesus lost their cool after being annoyed for days. “
finally.. something we can both agree on ;-)

beachdrivegirlParticipantThis has nothing to do with the people living on Alki. It has to be with $20,000 of our tax dollars being spent, local business owners losing hundreds of dollars during one day during their busiest season, with employees of these local businesses loosing tips, with people driving more than they might have to make room for a nonsense event…should i go on?
June 9, 2009 at 4:44 am #667992
alki_2008ParticipantJoB what part of the point of this was to allow people unfettered access to the beach area… not the boardwalk area… which is pretty much where the businesses are?
how would closing the boardwalk area and opening the beach area to cars have facilitated this?
What are you talking about?
JoB Sorry, but I can’t take any of your ‘how to increase business’ comments seriously, as you clearly don’t own/run a retail business and don’t understand the economics of ‘seasonal’ businesses. I’m just ignoring all those comments. I just “don’t buy it”.

beachdrivegirlParticipantKudos to you alki_2008! You hit the bulls eye!

JoBParticipantalki_2008…
“Many people unload a ton of ‘supplies’ from their cars to set-up for a day on the beach.”
if they bring that much in the way of supplies.. they aren’t buying much from the local merchants.. are they?
June 9, 2009 at 4:47 am #667995
JoBParticipanttsunaminw..
to “Celebrate Summer Streets” you need to close them… and closing the street is what makes it a street fair.
otherwise.. it’s just another event.
June 9, 2009 at 4:48 am #667996
beachdrivegirlParticipantWell there arent many firewood shops, towl shops, volleyball shops, umbrella shops etc on Alki and typically that is what they are unloading but i guess you would actually have TO GO to Alki to know that and we all know @ this point that would be a stretch.

tsunaminwMemberJob continues to talk about how one day does not make or break a business, its easy all they need to do is…. etc.
Your assuming alot for not having a business here, and excuse my saying so but who the hell are you to act like doing these things is easy or something they should have to do at all if not for the event? Your talking theory but dont seem to have ever done any of these things, have any concept of actual cost, and continue to minimize the effects.
I see more of the class envy attitude here, assuming a business owner is lucky, has it easy, etc. Your arrogance is amazing.
If you agree with me on my comment about being annoyed, then stop. Pushing someone to a point where they get annoyed and then sitting back and pointing going “hey look how angry this person is” is button pushing manipulation and would annoy anyone after this much of it.

alki_2008ParticipantJoB if they bring that much in the way of supplies.. they aren’t buying much from the local merchants.. are they?
Yes – they do. A lot of the supplies are chairs, towels/blankets, tents/umbrellas, strollers/kid gear, radios, balls, and some food/drinks that inevitably run out. And when they want “hot” food, then they go to the local restaurants. Shall I take an inventory of the “stuff” this coming weekend so you can debate my ‘facts’ again?

JoBParticipantbeachdrivegirl…
“If you were not there, did not participate, and were not affected by it how do you have an opinion on it?”
are you sure you want to go there? Are you willing to have no opinion and make no comments about events you do not intend to attend or experiences you did not personally witness?
LOL… i’d really like to see that…
in the meantime… back to our regular programing.

GenHillOneParticipantThere’s a whole lot of the pot calling the kettle black all around in this little snarkfest, so perhaps a deep breath and cold beverage would be a good call ’bout now.
June 9, 2009 at 4:54 am #668001
tsunaminwMemberDont assume that just calling an event something makes it that, its just a name. You could hardly call this event a street fair(but im sure you will continue to try)
And as mentioned before, all this could be done the same way every single other event including the art show, car show, motorcycle show, pirates landing etc has done without a street closure. The day the pirates land brings in so many more people with less impact to locals, more business to the shops, and is only hated by those who think cars are evil.

tsunaminwMemberA person might have a comment about an event they do not attend in an area they do not live in, but that opinion has less value than those who do and are directly impacted by it, good or bad.
Id be happy to “go there” on that one.

WSBKeymasterThread closed. Event’s way past, same points being made over and over again. Have already had to delete half a dozen rule violations and that’s more than enough for one thread. Impasse declared. As we wrote in our original stories, even before the event, if you have opinions one way or another, make sure you have let the mayor, the city council, and probably mayoral and city council candidates (since some new folks will be in office before this is tried next year, if it’s tried next year), know.
