AnonymousInactiveJoB – I can’t believe that you were able to tolerate second hand smoke for 16 years when second hand smoke results in you having to go to the emergency room.
Maybe that’s a recent development, but it seems like a dangerous possibility your husband’s habit made you subject to.
I think the biggest problem that smokers have is, not so much that they are not allowed to smoke anywhere anymore, but the attitudes they have to deal with when they are smoking where it is perfectly legal.
Just walking downtown to go have lunch the other day, my guy (who doesn’t smoke) and a colleague (who doesn’t smoke) were walking behind a smoker. They were outside on the sidewalk and the colleague was having a fit! He couldn’t have made a bigger deal about this person ahead of him on the sidewalk smoking. This colleagues reaction and behavior humiliated my guy, he was completely embarrassed.
Smokers don’t smoke inside ANYWHERE any longer. If a smoker wants to go outside and smoke (where it is still, last I checked, legal to do so), don’t throw a fit because you can smell it when they come back inside.
If something that minute is so troubling, offensive and health risky for you, perhaps you should stay indoors. Smoking is still a legal thing to do.
Back to the OP, you’re right, no one was there but you. Only you know the exact degree of smoke inside that barber shop. I agree that if it was full of smoke (as in, smoking was most certainly taking place WITHIN that shop), then, yes, you should never return.

acemotelParticipantPeople, do not go to China. You may have a problem in much of Europe, too, although that’s changing. Just last year I enjoyed an elevator ride in Amsterdam with two smokers in flagrante.
The point is, appreciate the protections you enjoy in the USA. The tobacco industry and lobby dominated this country for many years, subjecting innocent people to one of the most highly-addictive substances known to man. To change the culture of smoking to a culture of healthy breathing was/is akin to moving mountains. It’s one (of the very few IMO) area the US is ahead of many other countries.
Demonizing smokers, and everything they do, serves no purpose. It will not make smokers stop, and it will just annoy you even more than you already are.

TammiWSMemberFor those of you who are trying to quit – it’s tough! Probably the toughest thing you’ll ever do. Try this site – the state offers phone coaching support and medications if you’re considering quitting. The WA Quitline is based here in Seattle.

JanSParticipantTootie…I think that, as a new person on this forum, it’s good to hear a different perspective, but what the OP said is not hogwash. It truly doesn’t matter if she’s the owner or not, she was still smoking inside, according to him, and lied about it.
Also..we are a great bunch of people on here. We always welcome more. We try to not bring anger into the conversations (although it DOES get a little contentious in the political threads – lol). Also, we try to not get nasty in our comments. As the editors of the blog and forum have said, discuss the opinions, but we leave personal jabs out of it.
Again…hope you enjoy your stay here..

JoBParticipantI am about to be sorely tested.
hubby didn’t make it through the most stressful weekend of his life without smoking.
he didn’t smoke much.. and certainly not around me.
but i struggled for air last night and don’t know what i will do if he can’t stop again.
You have no idea what it is like to know that the hug you need will be accompanied by a struggle just to breathe.
I am not anti-smokers… and i am not angry with hubby… he had a really tough weekend.. tougher than me and i was moving us…
but at some time smokers have to get that their habit makes life absolutely miserable for some of us.. and is deadly for others.
and i do an immediate about face any place that believes you have to make a bold statement with e aromatherapy… so it’s not just smoke..
When i hear people complain about how the the rights of others are being abused… i want to ask them if my right to breathe trumps their right to wear to wear enough scent to be smelled as they enter the room.. or smoke in my face…
or my right to be pain free in public trumps their right to argue with someone in public on their cellphone while i sit trapped at the next table trying to finish my meal.. or play their music so loudly through their headphones that I don’t need to stand near them to share their beat.. or the same thing with the car stereo that thumps and shakes me in the car ahead.. or…
The same people who complain about others infringing on rights whine loudly when someone impacts them..
but respond with indignation when they think that you might be infringing on their rights.. even on rights they don’t really want to exercise..
What happened to old fashioned courtesy?
oh, yeah, that’s right.. it’s old fashioned.
