Took a trip to the Waterfront today and saw this guy using this adorable black lab puppy so people would give him money for weed.

While I agree that using a puppy for panhandling is manipulative and in bad taste, why does it matter if he uses it for weed money? As long as he wasn’t actively hunting people down and begging them for cash forcefully, I see no problem in his use for the money. I’d much rather know that a homeless guy would spend his money on weed than something far more destructive, like booze or other hard drugs. Many of those signs are jokes, anyway.

While I agree that a stoner can (and will) spend panhandling money any way he or she pleases, I do NOT agree that he has the right to use an innocent animal to do it. The bigger question is the welfare of the animal in question. It’s highly unlikely that the puppy – who has no choice in the matter – will receive adequate care, especially from someone whose stated priority is drugs.

    So.. i have to ask…

    did this panhandler’s sign say

give me money so i can buy weed?

and why do you assume that this panhandler was “using” his puppy to get money for weed?

    anonyme..

every day i see people whose dogs should be taken away from them and given to good homes… lonely dogs left in the yard all day who beg attention every time i pass… dogs who are jerked on leashes and yelled at and hit and kicked…

those dogs live in “nice” homes with “nice” people.

Maybe you should have offered to buy the dog from him.

And it’s not unheard of that once he made more money in a few hours then you and I do in an 8 hour day, he hopped in his car and drove home having the rest of the day to play with his puppy and enjoy time in the sun.

I think perhaps I will go sit in front of a store with a cup and have people hand me tax free cash.

    Pam…

i know a lady in Portland who does just that.

she panhandles in front of the downtown Whole Foods

and goes home to her apartment above it

the funny thing is that most of the people who hand her a buck or two know it

    and admire her resourcefulness

and ability to put up with abuse from those who aren’t so charmed

she and others like her are the exception

mostly those who panhandle do so to provide basic necessities like food

    i don’t think i could do it.

but you have a go if you think that would work for you

Some of the best loved and cared for dogs I’ve seen are owned by homeless people. Don’t assume that the homeless are inept at caring for animals just because they don’t have a wooden or concrete roof to call their own.

I generally don’t give money to panhandlers, regardless of what I think they’re going to do with it. Dropping a buck on a guy with a sign might make you feel good about yourself, but in most cases it actually hurts the guy.

Wait a minute! you say. How can it possibly hurt someone to give them free money?

    —Yeah.

Original idea. I was going toask the same question JoB.

I have never seen a homeless person’s dog that looked or acted as though neglected, or underfed. Usually well trained.I have talked to a few when out and about and they’l tell you if its ok to be friendly with their pet. Starting to train as a puppy is good.

I’ve heard comments like “What are they doing with a dog if homeless?” A best friend, protects them, keeps them warm. Its not left to fend for itself.

Funny that we are more concerned about the puppy than the fact that this guy is homeless.

See now I probably saw the same guy but I was more concerned with my 5 yro standing there trying to sound out the words…….

C’mon folks, where in the original post does it even say that the guy was homeless. For that matter, where are the details that supports the OP’s statement. And the waterfront? Like along the viaduct? What around here is referred to as the waterfront? Looks like a forum “dump & run.” Move along now, nuthin’ to see here, lol.

The Seattle Waterfront – downtown – never said the guy was homeless. I have great compassion for anyone being homeless.

    luckymom30..

how do you know he wasn’t homeless?

and what makes you think he was using his puppy to get people to give him money for weed?

maybe it was just his puppy

homeless people’s pets benefit from having an owner that spends all of their time with them

JoB – I did not say he was homeless and I do not know if he is homeless. The puppy was being yanked and pulled. I never said or even thought that homeless people mistreat their pets and that they do not benefit from having their companionship. I did offer the guy some food for the puppy but he declined he just wanted drug money.

JoB… The animal doesn’t deserve to be homeless, and it certainly didn’t ask to belong to a homeless person. They go on for days without food because its owner isn’t capable of taking care of it. I’ve seen it. One time this person brought his dog with him to eat under the freeway and it literally went biserk when it smelled food and tried to jump on the table it was so hungry. A very sad sight to see. I don’t see the benefit of an animal not being cared for properly regaardless if its owner is with it all the time. It has to battle the same elements as that homeless person does.

if the guy was yanking and pulling on the puppy then he wasn’t using it to actually obtain handouts, was he?

if you want to post about people treating their pets badly.. i am all with you. It really bothers me to see pets abused and i see it all too often on all sides of town.

    jiggers..

and i have seen people go hungry because they fed their pets first and themselves second.

neither homeless or housed people are all heroes.

Not really…JoB.. Just hang out at Westlake Park and watch the homeless teens treat their dogs. Disgusting to say the least. The dog is too tired to move and drops itself to rest, but they pull it by the neck until it is forced to move with them. Hey…I’m surprised that your dogs didn’t bite the crap out of the person who stole your personals.. They can be vicious little things but cute at the same time.

    jiggers..

    people are people.

i have seen teens who live in some very nice houses treat their pets just as badly and then curl them into their arms when they wanted/needed attention.

willingness to take care of anyone/anything at least as well as you take care of yourself isn’t limited to those who live in houses.

I want one… a weed dog. Send him out like a St. Bernard with a little cask under his neck… and he returns with a couple oz’z of Haze or Kush, or some such. How cool. But you are right as rain on this one JoB.. I have seen people with dogs that will feed them first or get medical attention. Ya gotta have something to love in this world … it may be the only connection they have. Jiggers. I am telling you it was an inside job… there was collusion between the dog and the thief. JoB your dogs sold you out for Jerky Treats.
