If you get a call from someone pretending to be a deputy who wants to confirm your address, be aware that it’s a scam. The guy will go on to explain that you have missed a jury summons and a warrant has been issued for your arrest and perhaps you’d like to pay the fine now, over the phone.

I have a friend call me yesterday about this type of call. She insisted she must contact the sheriff’s dept directly to confirm the veracity of the call. But that particular office closes at 4:30pm and the call was placed at 4:35pm. Next day she did confirm that it’s another scam, along the lines of the fake IRS calls. You can take it as a given that if anyone calls you claiming to be a government official and is happy to take a credit card over the phone, it’s a scam.

Seems like there’s a new scam every day. My home phone has become unusable; I may as well just have it disconnected. It’s a constant stream of spam & scam, despite the DNR registration. This morning I got a hangup call at 7 am from ‘Royal Bus Bank’. Filed a complaint with the FTC.

This might be a good time to mention that ‘Nomorobo’ the winner of the FCC (?) competition to end robo/telemarketing calls, is blocked locally by Century Link. Tells you a lot about why we have this problem when the company you’re paying for service is actually doing big business by selling your info against your will.
