guidosmomMemberFor the past 2 years I had a wonderful organic delivery (Pioneer Organics). I got notice a few months ago that they were going to be sold to (or something?) SPUD. I had four awful deliveries from SPUD, moldy produce, etc… I contacted them on several occasions, and never got a response back, so I discontinued my delivery. Does anyone have any recommendations for other organic produce companies that deliver to West Seattle? I thought I’d be fine without it but really miss the convenience. Any recommendations?

jMemberAmazonFresh.com is great. Their produce has always been beautiful for us.

SueParticipantThanks for the warning about spud.com – I used to use Pioneer Organics for a few years and was thinking of starting it up again when I heard they merged. Never got around to ordering from them, but now glad I didn’t.

JanSParticipantYes…thanks for that info. I have been on hiatus from Pioneer Organics for a few months, and in the meantime were absorbed by Spud.com. My first delivery back on schedule is tomorrow. I’m hoping now that things are OK. If not, cancelled right away for sure. Another service that I’ve heard of, about the same price, and have had good reports about is New Roots Organic.

I may or may not try them next.
It’s very sad to hear this about Pioneer Organics. They’ve been around for years, and I’ve always gotten great stuff from them, and excellent service..loved my delivery guy. What a shame to be bought out by a service that may not care as much.

guidosmomMemberI was SO sad about Pioneer organics. Let me share my experience. The first “SPUD” delivery arrived, several items had mold on them. I contacted customer service and never heard back. Since it was the first week, I gave them the benefit of the doubt. The second delivery arrived and even more items were bad. Again, I contacted customer service and never heard back. Third week same thing, this time I suspended my account with an explanation as to why. I said I would resume if they would make changes, no response back. I gave them a couple weeks and then canceled my account. A week later I got an email back apologizing and letting me know they credited my account $40. Uh… Ok, but what am I supposed to do since I canceled my account? :) Even the SPUD newsletter was much smaller than the Pioneer organics one. I miss them. :(

KayleighMemberBummed to hear that about Spud—I was thinking about trying them. :-(

jMemberAs I said earlier, I use Amazonfresh for my organic produce, but most of my friends who live in Bellevue use Full Circle Farms. http://www.fullcirclefarm.com/ They will deliver to WS too, but you have to go pick them up from a drop off location. Their produce is beautiful and during the summer month, comes straight from their farm.

MCMMemberLast year I purchased the Chinook book at PCC and it had 3 different coupons for home delivery. I think it was Tiny’s, Pioneer and New Roots. I tried Tiny’s and New Roots and was happy with the quality. Too bad about Pioneer.

mellaw6565MemberWe have to 2nd the complaint about Pioneer. We have been receiving deliveries from them for over a year and have absolutely loved the quality. However, when SPUD took over we had the same problems – moldy items, things left in the sun (even though delivery instructions say to leave on our shaded porch) and late deliveries. We complained and received a partial credit of a few bucks for the moldy items, but not much else in the way of customer service. We have also cancelled our service as of last week and are looking for something else.
Does/has anyone use Tiny’s? We’d like to stay away from the corporate giants (i.e. Amazon Fresh) and support a smaller company if possible.
Also, years ago we “bought into” an organic farm over on Beacon Hill where we paid a small price for the summer ($150) and picked up veggie’s every two weeks from the farm. Not sure if that’s still done around here but it may be another option.

JanSParticipantcheck out the Tiny’s website…if nothing else, the guys who operate the place are easy on the eyes ;-)

they divide the seasons into two…early and late..and they want you to pay up front. $561 for 11 weeks of veggies and fruit…works out to $51 per week, and you pick up at Youngstown Art Center on Delridge on Wednesdays…

mellaw6565MemberThanks Jan for the info. However, my girl & I don’t want to look at boys:)Now if they had cute girls….. LOL! Then again, we think all women are beautiful on the outside – it’s the insides that can be so ugly on some.

RobindianneParticipantWe use Eden Organics although I always want more berries than they give me (who doesn’t) I’m happy with their service. West Seattle delivery is Friday (at least by Thistle and Delridge).

JanSParticipantmellaw6565…’tis true of everyone sometimes, huh :)
OK..so I’ll report in on my delivery today by Spud.com
When I had pioneer organics, they rang my bell, and delivered right to my apartment. My profile stated that if I wasn’t here to leave the box on the front stoop, and I would leave the empty container for pickup. Well, they never rang my bell, just left it…a neighbor told me it was here…so now I have 2 containers…live and learn. The produce was fine, though…so I’ll give them another chance for now.

JanSParticipantrobindianne…thanks for that info..I’ve never heard of Eden Organics…the website reminds me of an early Pioneer Org. website…

RainyDay1235MemberItoo used SPUD for about 6 months, and was pretty happy despite some defrosted foods and some wilty lettuce. But I found myself spending more than I needed, hence I stopped service.
New Roots Organic just won the \’Best Produce Delivery\’ from \”Seattle Metropolitan Magazine\” (far superior to \”Seattle Magazine\” IMHO).
>>Long before the word \”locovore\” entered the American lexicon, Seattle-area shoppers regularly sought out all-natural produce grown nearby, and Carolyn Boyle\’s NEW ROOTS ORGANIC brought it to them. Since 1999, she has delivered luscious bundles of organic, recently picked produce to doorsteps all over the city, providing ingredients for countless low-impact, highly tasty meals. We\’re just happy the rest of the world has caught on.\”

JanSParticipantthey’re tops on my list for my next service, for sure..
July 7, 2008 at 12:18 am #630203
theriedlerMemberI’ve had the same problems with spud except the customer service. I called them itemized every one of my complaints and they credited me for everything. I also made it clear that I was disappointed in the transition and did not want this kind of thing repeatedly happening. The guy said that they were having some trouble merging the operations, and in addition they had a few new people come on. He said every time I complained the supervisor would be notified about the specific incident. Things have gotten better. My only standing complaint is that they appear to be more expensive than pioneer by selling things in pairs (or threes) or by the pound, instead of individually. I want to buy one lemon damnit!
July 7, 2008 at 4:21 am #630204
JanSParticipantinteresting..part of my order this past week was “garlic scapes”…they are the green stems of the garlic before the bulbs mature…are mildly garlicky , great in stir-fries, salad, pasta sauce, etc. etc Price was 2.91 for 3 of the suckers tied together. I’m havin’ a problem with that…organic or not, that’s really expensive…hmmm…
July 7, 2008 at 6:39 am #630205
guidosmomMemberJanS – Those “garlic scapes” are yummy! The farmer’s market usually has them for much cheaper. We got a bag of them a few weeks ago for maybe $1.50.
Also, my partner ended up ordering from Amazon fresh yesterday so we could give it a try. We got it today and I have to admit it was pretty good and convenient. Initially I had an issue with ordering from them because I like to support local farmers, etc… but it sure was convenient. I’ll still go to the farmer’s market for most produce though.
July 7, 2008 at 6:55 am #630206
JanSParticipantI’ve ordered from AmazonFresh in the past…great produce, good meat, great customer service. And they do have organic, and I bet some of it is local. Also, looks like I need to ditch Spud.com and maybe start getting my arse out of bed on Sunday morn, and go to the farmers market…
July 7, 2008 at 5:58 pm #630207
guidosmomMemberI don’t eat meat, but the farmer’s market does have local meat and my carnivore friends say it’s wonderful. We get DELICIOUS local cheeses, breads, fruits, veggies, and beautiful cheap flowers. It’s worth it. My favorite is the roasted peppers I haven’t seen yet this year. Fingers crossed they’ll be back soon.
July 7, 2008 at 6:09 pm #630208
BayouMemberI’ve also had great results from Amazon Fresh. I’ve heard good things about Full Circle Farm too but haven’t tried them out.

RainyDay1235MemberI might try this – talk about LOCAL…
http://seattlemarketgardens.org
Half Share (feeds 2-3 adults) $310 = about $14 per week

July 7, 2008 at 9:26 pm #630210
RSMemberWe’re big farmers market fans, but have ordered from Amazon Fresh in the past as well. They do let you search using “local” and “organic” as criteria.
July 7, 2008 at 9:37 pm #630211
mellaw6565MemberRainyday – that’s the one we used a few summers ago. It was a great experience and I loved visiting the garden every week to see what I would get. They are a little pricy up front, but I thought the quality was excellent.
I’m going to check out the New Roots site as well.
