Schmitz Park DadParticipantCan anyone recommend a good, affordable tree trimmer in West Seattle? Thanks

anonymeParticipantSorry, but I have to say this: trees should never be “trimmed”. They are not large bushes. Pruning should be done by a qualified arborist who will make only the necessary cuts. Most landscape companies, even the ones who advertise pruning as a service, are not qualified to work on trees. Pruning trees is a far cry from mowing lawns.
If the trees are not on your property, but on the planting strip, you cannot touch them without a permit. A new rule was passed last year which requires that a City qualified arborist also be on site to oversee any pruning of street trees. A neighbor recently hired a couple of chain saw yahoos to trim the street trees in front of his house. They carved off all of the outer branches of some beautiful maples, leaving stick lollipops behind. They will be receiving $500 fines. The cheap comes out expensive…
As for the trees, they will never recover from this butchery.
Our best West-Seattle based arborist retired recently, but you could try Kathy Holzer with Out on a Limb. Plant Amnesty also maintains a list of qualified arborists.

Schmitz Park DadParticipantAnyone else got a good tree trimmer?

jissyParticipantSchmitz: I don’t think he lives in West Seattle, but he has done work for me in West Seattle (and Tukwila) before. Excellent, excellent guy & arborist. Michael Bray of http://www.standingpeopletreecare.com

KatherineLParticipantI’ve seen Stonehedge recommended frequently here. I’ve never used them myself, but they’re certified arborists and West Seattle. They won’t butcher your trees.
I like Roger Brown, myself, from Apical Tree Service. He works a lot in West Seattle, although he’s from Ballard. Does excellent work at an affordable price. Also a certified arborist.
I would also suggest Plant Amnesty’s list if you’d like to look further.

anonymeParticipantKatherine, Mark Harmon (Stonehedge) retired last year. Sad, but true. I’ve heard good things about Apical as well.

The Velvet BulldogParticipantHi SPDad: I second the recommendation for Roger at Apical Tree Services: Phone number (206) 679-8253. He’s awesome–knows his Maples from his Madronas and will give you a free estimate. Just PUH-LEASE don’t do what my neighbors did which was let someone trim their parking strip Magnolia with a weed whacker! Gah! The poor tree now looks ridiculous and probably feels really embarrassed too.

anonymeParticipantVB, homeowners can’t touch a street tree (planting/parking strip) without a permit, and the work must be supervised by a City-approved arborist. Doesn’t matter who planted it – the City owns it. Please consider reporting this to the City Arborist, Nolan Rundquist. This rampant tree destruction is happening everywhere, and needs to stop.
