CalaveRosaParticipantHey neighbors, I need some advice, I’m moving to LA and I’m wondering if you can suggest any moving company that would transport a pile of boxes for cheap, I’m not moving any furniture just boxes with clothes and personal items, any help would be appreciated, Thanks!

sbreParticipantI’d check out one of those portal storage containers that are delivered to your home, you fill it and then they pick-up & ship.
No personal history however seems like viable alternative.
Good luck.

Georgia MomMemberI had checked out Door to Door but never used them – they have containers of all sizes. I went with PODS, and it was not a good experience. Another option, if you are driving and can tow, a little uhaul trailer is not very expensive. They even install hitches if you need one. Good luck!

WSBKeymasterOne more thing to inquire about, depending on how many boxes: Amtrak. It’s how I made an on-the-cheap halfway-cross-the-country move more than a few years ago. Looks like they still offer this kind of shipping:

MargLMemberHaving done the move from WA to CA just a couple years ago, (has it been two years already?) with the husband moving down ahead of time I can say the POD-type box and ship option works pretty well for an apartment’s worth of stuff. We got one box from Atlas – they call them SmartVaults http://www.atlasvanlines.com/smart-move/moving-container/ You pack, they move. There’s options for storing it at a warehouse for awhile if you don’t want it delivered right away, too.

KevinParticipantTracy has a great idea about using Amtrak, but it looks like YOU have to get things to the train station, and it sort of sounds like you need to be there to pick it up at the other end. Appears to be a weight limit of 500# per shipment, and no breakable items are permitted.
.
Having been in the moving industry many years ago, I can tell you that all of the moving companies are going to charge you about the same amount, as they are ALL regulated by the state.
.
Arkansas Best Freight (ABF – green and silver color scheme) hauls not only freight but also has followed the lead of the self pack container industry and offers door to door pickup and delivery using what they call a “ReloCube.”
.
ABF may be more reasonable as they are a freight company first and container hauler second, where PODS and others specialize strictly in self packing moving containers.

.
I can’t say for sure, but full coverage insurance is probably not even available. In the past, moving and storage companies were only required to pay you sixty cents per pound for loss or damage if you did not buy extra insurance, and pay nothing for PBO boxes – packed by owner, except in the case of accident, or loss caused by the carrier.
.
If all you are shipping is clothes and misc small stuff like kitchen utensils etc, it is really not going to matter who hauls it as long as you are convinced that they can get it from point A to B.
.
The ABF website says you can save even more by bringing the boxes to one of their terminals.
.
ABF seems to be fairly highly rated by Yelp in many different cities.
.
Personal disclaimer :) – I’m not a mover, nor do I work for any moving company, just an individual who has seen the industry from the inside.

GAnativeParticipantI don’t know if they still do it or what the costs are but years ago I moved some boxes via Greyhound.

DroppleParticipantI’d probably just look into shipping the boxes if you’re not taking any furniture. I would imagine a moving company would charge more than Fedex UPS etc. but I don’t really know. As for a good LA moving company I would recommend, look into Three Movers who we used when we moved my parents to the area. No problems at all.

DroppleParticipantSorry I’m new here and didn’t catch the date on this as I was looking around. NM
