Jerry WhitingParticipantI’m looking for a group to sit with on a regular basis here in West Seattle.
If there isn’t a group already established I’d be interested in helping start one.
FYI: I’m a Tibetan Buddhist but am opening to sit with any and all practicioners. I looking for meditation buddies and fellow sangha/householders not dharma clones.

elgregoMemberWhen I lived in Florida, I attended a Thai wat. I moved here about six months ago and have had NO luck in finding a meditation group I can live with. The local Thai wat here (in Federal Way) doesn’t have an English medidation/service, and all the other ones I’ve found are too hippy-touchy-feely for me.
I take my meditation pretty seriously, and I like to meditate with other people that do too. All too often I’ve found meditation groups that just embarrass me. Patchouli and paisley and crystal necklasses, etc. Ugh.

ChessaMemberI would love to find a group to sit with regularly in WS! I’ve been interested in buddhism for years and have attended a couple of formal sits back in MI, mostly zen. I also just started taking a beginners vipassana meditation course from the Seattle Insight Meditation Society which meets once a week for six weeks on Monday evenings (you can still join if you start next week!). I love it, and will finish the course, but it’s kind of too far for my taste once the class is over to keep meeting with them (in Fremont area). So I would definitely be interested in finding or forming something closer!
I know there is some kind of buddhist meditation at Sound Yoga on Monday nights from 7:30-9 – but I can’t find a lot of info about it. I’m not sure if it’s a class or just a sitting group/dharma group (the website is several months out of date). I’m going to email the folks to ask what the deal is, and if I get a response I’ll let you know.

B-squaredParticipanthey! i’m in that class too!
i could have sworn that i saw where a Seattle Insight Meditation Society associated sitting group was starting up in WS – i read it in their newsletter i believe (back in january).

ChessaMemberCool, B-squared! Are you getting all your homework done? I’m doing alright with sitting, but I kind of suck at doing my markers – I chose washing dishes, and I just totally blew it today. Oh well, it’s a process. ;)
That would be awesome if IMS would start a sitting group here! I really dig their teachings/style. I particularly like Sharon Salzberg and Sylvia Boorstein.

MellyMelParticipantThis is very timely for me as I have been meditating on my own (well after reading a few books) for a short while and would like to try and sit in a group. Please let me know if a local group forms/wants to get together.

ChessaMemberI got an email back from the person in charge of meditation at Sound Yoga. It looks like it is a twice a month (drop-in) class rather than simply a sitting group. Maybe what you are looking for, maybe not. Me, I’m already in a meditation class and would rather have a regular sitting group with maybe a dharma talk thrown in at the end or a reading or something. Not sure what you guys were looking for.
In any case, you can find more information about the Sound Yoga class here: http://nkt-kmc-washington.org/courses/west-seattle

LenaParticipantSeattle Insight Meditation has a West Seattle sitting group on Thursday evenings. The organizers are Deborah Capwell (deborahflora@gmail.com) and Nancy Brett (nancybrett@comcast.net). I’ve been meditating with SIMS for about five years and it is a simple vipassana style that can work for most meditation traditions. I’ve yet to be to the West Seattle group but am a facilitator for a small parenting group through SIMS. http://www.seattleinsight.org/

ChessaMemberLenamegan, that is so great! Thanks so much for the info on the WS Insight group. I will contact them soon.
I know that the SIMS small groups max out for members, but if you have openings at all in the parenting group, I would love to join. I’ve got a 2-year-old and would love to discuss mindful parenting with other parents.

lindafaneMemberHello I just discovered this forum. I am the teacher for the Buddhist Meditation classes that are held at Sound Yoga. We have been meeting almost every Monday night for 4 years. Everyone is welcome. We have monthly series organized around a dharma topic and it is very accessible. You can drop in for one class or do a whole series, whatever you like. Starting on March 9th, we are offering a series called “Free From “Fear”. For more information, visit http://nkt-kmc-washington.org/courses/west-seattle

voodooMemberlindafane – I used to attend Kadampa dharma classes at the Friends meeting center in the U-District, and really enjoyed them!
I am happy to know that there are classes in my “new” neighborhood. Perhaps I will drop in one Monday evening.

DMParticipantI found it encouraging that the meditation sitting topic was brought up again. Thank you. I’m also a Seattle Insight Meditation member, but I’ve never joined the group that sits at the Kenney in West Seattle on Thursdays. It’s time for me to do that.

ellenaterMemberI am also very interested in sitting with a group and am also totally repulsed by new age crap. I do like Astrology when done right, however. I’m not attached to any particular brand of Buddhism ;) I like Thich Nhat Hanh, Tibetan, Jack Kornfield. I listen to some Rodney podcasts, too from SIMS but I don’t feel like that is the right fit for me. So if anyone spearheads a group, PM me please!
