AlkiDogMommyParticipantRumor has it that business is down at Kokoras Greek Grill and they might be going out of business. Has anyone else heard about this? It would be a real shame: my family and I love that place!

swimcatMemberWhat?!?!?! I hope this isn’t true- I’ll be going there for a gyro and bottle of salad dressing this weekend. I LOVE this restaurant!!!

flowerpetalMemberPerhaps someone could ask them? I’ve been there but not as often as some of you have I’m guessing. I think they would be upfront about their situation if they knew that the enquirer was going to tell others to rush to Kokora’s.

WSBKeymasterI have called and left a message asking them to call back as soon as they can.

WSBKeymasterJust got a call back. Here’s what this boils down to:
NO, there is no current plan to close.
But yes, business is not as strong as they would like it to be.
(My takeaway – and this is from talking to other proprietors elsewhere, as per the independent bookstore discussion here in the Forums earlier this week – if you are a fan of this or any other local restaurant/business and want to be sure it continues to be available to you, SUPPORT IT and make sure your friends/family know about it too.)

celeste17ParticipantNext time we go out for food we will go there.

inactiveMemberI sure am hoping that isn’t so. I love the fresh baklava! But in the few times I’ve been there in the past 2 1/2 months or so, I have seen three people in there at dinner. Not good.

MrJTMemberFlashmob! And let’s keep in mind NOT to get all bent out of shape when they run out of food the first couple of days of mobbing.

KimberleyParticipantThey’re definitely not going out of business. Currently, Spiros’ father is very sick, and therefore he is going back to Greece for a few months, and his wife will stay here to keep the business open.

west seattle golferMemberWe almost always get takeout from Kokoras. The last few times though, they’ve either gotten the order wrong or overcharged us. When I’ve called to complain about a wrong order (Falafel sandwich instead of an Gyro e.g.), they’ve been very rude and not accommodating – basically saying too bad we won’t replace it. That and the overcharging (they once rang us up for $30+ for 2 sandwiches!) has meant my wife and I take our Greek food dollars elsewhere (Zaina in PioSq e.g.)
Sorry Kokoras, we tried to like you, but for us, it isn’t meant to be.

AlkiDogMommyParticipantYes, it’s true that Spiros’ father is sick and he is going back to Greece, but I have heard that notwithstanding their business is suffering and his being gone will probably be an additional strain.

ellenaterMemberMy son had his first Baklava there. I just want to say that it was one of the most touching experiences I have ever had. When they found out it was his first Baklava, the whole family crowded around the table to watch him take his first bite. When his eyes lit up they all cheered. I have literally never felt so welcome anywhere in my life. They also gave him a sucker and treated him and I like family.
I will go definitely go there more!!! This is a business that we cannot afford to lose in our community!

JenVMemberBIG UPS to Kokoras. Not only is it a great place to dine in, it’s great for takeout AND they deliver to Beverage Place Pub! The food is delicious, and it’s always so nice when you see the owners out taking an interest in if the customers are enjoying their meals – every time I have been there one of the owners is usually circulating the tables, talking to customers. It’s always so warm and welcoming and the food is to die for. best dolmades in town, IMHO.

HuindekmiParticipantIt seems like the downturn coincided with the opening of Zekes and the Feedback Lounge. I don’t think it’s the competition so much as the lack of parking (or more precisely, greater competition for the limited parking in the neighborhood).
We love Kokoras and hate to see them suffer.

KimberleyParticipantI hadn’t heard that at all AlkiDogMommy and I was just literally in there the other night talking to the wife and one of the long-time waiters, she talked about how hard it would be for her to be apart from her husband (they’ve never been apart) but never mentioned that they may go out of business. It’d be a true shame, I love supporting small, family-run businesses like theirs in West Seattle.
