So out into the universe it goes…:

putting this out there….I have a doc appointment at the Polyclinic at 7th and Madison on Friday, 7/24/15 at 11:30am. My car is inoperable at the moment, and Metro doesn’t go there from here :(. The closest they can get me is 3rd and Senaca (great service, don’t you think?). I cannot walk the 6-7 blocks uphill that they want me to walk (going for a lower leg problem). Appt. will be approximately an hour, I think) Is anyone going in that direction who can maybe give me a lift? Thanks…am in the Admiral District !

JanS — if I still had a car, I’d be happy to help.

You might try the Hyde Shuttle; they might be able to pick you up in downtown and take you to the Polyclinic:

Access could also get you there from WS since your disability prevents you from taking the trip on Route 12, which serves the Polyclinic, as you can’t negotiate the slopes between the stops and to/from your destination.

Metrognome. I called Hyde Shuttle yesterday afternoon…they require a 3 day advance notice…the third day is cut off at noon. I called at 1pm…sigh. I no longer have an Access account. I seriously didn’t think I’d need it again…another sigh. And from the Admiral District, I tried every which way to connect with a #12 without going uphill (achilles tendon issue, which appt. is for) or walking more than a block.

It is so frustrating when one has to research and research when one needs a simply ride. Someone suggested Uber/Lyft, etc. I have used them in the past. Over 30 bucks round trip…nope, not gonna do it, even if it is door to door…

    I think I’ve found a ride…so all the better for me…

JanS – glad you’ve (hopefully) found a ride. As a manual wheelchair user, I know how difficult or impossible it can be to traverse even a block or two on a slope that (temporarily) able-bodied folks don’ even notice. when the ADA first came out, the feds invited my to USDOT conference in Orange County to explain to them what their own rules said. It delighted me to no end to watch their faces when I ‘splained that I tried for 3 hours to get across the 8 lane divided boulevard to the shopping mall and restaurants across from the hotel (because curb ramps were missing) that they got to in 60 seconds by jaywalking.

btw, if you were registered for Access under the ADA Paratransit Program (rather than the Options Program), I don’t think your eligibility expires; I think it goes ‘inactive’ unless you were temporarily eligible but I could be wrong. You still should be able to request a ride, but it would likely trigger a recertification process. But I could be wrong …

you might also want to see if you are eligible for the Taxi Scrip program and use them to shuttle you to/from downtown to the clinic.

    Jan,

I’m glad you’ve found a ride. I’ve faced the same problem in the past. For future reference, in case you’re really desperate…what Metro won’t tell you is that – with careful perusal of the route schedules – you can get the #21 to drop you off at Third and Madison. A few minutes later you can catch the #12. It loops around and will leave you off at Sixth and Madison. From there you just walk across the freeway to the Polyclinic.

The difficulty for you, of course, is getting to the #21. It doesn’t come over to the Junction where you could hook up with it. So you’d have to catch four buses to get to the Polyclinic. But in case you find the information useful somehow, there it is.

Vanessa…thanks for your post. Yes, I have found a ride. This doesn’t happen very often, but I will keep your information as a future reference.

and here I thought Metrognome was gonna let me ride on the back of his chair all the way downtown ;-)

Katherine..thanks for that info…yes…4 buses is daunting….and then there’s getting home again…I will keep that in mind , though….Metro sure has done a good job of cutting the Admiral District out…guess they figure we’re all rich down here, and have no need for public transportation during the day (yes, sarcasm, in case they’re reading)
