Does anyone know what’s happening, why a helicopter is flying around the Westwood neighborhood right now?

It’s 2:18 am and the helicopter is using a searchlight around what looks like Roxbury and somewhere between 8th and 16th.

Just saw this. I don’t monitor the forum every minute so I repeat the invitation for anyone with a time-sensitive question like this to please e-mail us … we monitor e-mail around the clock, editor@westseattleblog.com (or text, 2062936302@vtext.com, 24/7, if we’re away from the computer that will get us instantly).

But short answer, no, first I’ve heard of it. No one else has e-mailed to ask about it (multiple e-mails also tend to trigger us checking on things). I’ve turned on the scanner and will post if we hear anything obvious or if I can find anything out from law enforcers (afterhours contacts are spotty).

I have seen the King County Sheriff Department helicopter many times in the last sixteen years (I live near 9 SW & SW Trenton).

I have always wondered if it is effective.

It has a spotlight, but it continually orbits (I’m guessing to minimize effectiveness of potential groundfire) so the spotlight advantage would seem to be limited by its orbiting.

Maybe instead of paying for more of the same, we could pay for infra-red technology for the helicopter or at least for goggles for its pilot.

ScottB, the King Co. helicopter does have Forward Looking Infrared (FLIR). More about the helicopter’s capabilities and usefullness can be found here http://tinyurl.com/crdvyg

    Alcina,

Thanks for the link. The information at that link makes me feel good about the helicopter(s).

Orbiting at night is also probably easier than hovering at altitude at night, now that I think about it.
