Politics aside, how is this not considered a hate crime?

It did raise the ire of the Secret Service and the Mayor and the person agreed to take it down, but there are several cases (think Jena, LA just one of the top of my head) where people were charged by the Feds for hate crimes.

It does not rise to the level of hate crime IMO, because it does not actually harm or threaten to harm a person or their property. It is part of a really tasteless and offensive Halloween display (on private property) depicting a public figure. I personally find it deplorable, however that does not equate to a crime. Substitute Nancy Pelosi for Palin. Would you find that funny, offensive, or a hate crime?

A hate crime is generally defined as a threat or action against some one based on their race, gender, religion, and in more progressive areas, sexual orientation. In most cases burning an effigy, or in this case, hanging and effigy is considered an act of protest, however tasteless. It is this thing called free speech. I think this one was in poor taste, but the McCain one was a bit humorous. This would be a little different if rich white woman where once the victims of nation wide lynchings. Luckily, everyone loves rich white women.

JT, I asked you to put politics aside. Asking if it was Nancy Pelosi is interjecting partisan politics.

And no, I would not find it funny. I haven’t found the Obama ones funny. Despite the fact that I might disagree with Pelosi, Obama or Biden, I would never advocate their death.

I think another distinction has to be made – in the case of the Jena, LA effigy and others like it, the racial implications were clear since the effigy’s identity was non-descript with the exception of the color of the “skin”.

Here there are no racial overtones since she is white (hangings of whites has never been racially motivated) and a public figure running for government. It’s more like a political cartoon or parody. But I am NOT condoning it – it left me feeling queasy.

Interestingly, it WOULD be considered racist if someone had hung Obama’s effigy instead, because the hangings of blacks in this country have been, and always will be, blatant acts of racism.

I’m disturbed that anyone would demonstrate the hanging of anything at any time except witches, ghosts and goblins at Halloween.

Yes, but their hanging is not supernaturally motivated:)

TheHouse, because you never choose to clarify intentions until someone mis-interprets you, politics aside, refers to you, putting your politics, ASIDE. What you DID ask, is how is that not considered a hate crime? Which I answered.

I don’t know who you’re confusing me with, but you always used to be a gentleman and engaged with me politely and reasonably. I have asked you specific questions in the last week, all of which you’ve chosen to not answer. So please don’t insist that I follow an apparently implied, order.
