How Washington State ranks nationally on Forbes Index:

Rank 28th – Business Cost – Index based on cost of labor, energy and taxes.

Rank 2nd – Labor – Measures educational attainment, net migration and projected population growth.

Rank 6th – Regulatory Environment – Measures regulatory and tort climate, incentives, transportation and bond ratings.

Rank 7th – Economic Climate – Reflects job, income and gross state product growth as well as unemployment and presence of big companies.

Rank 2nd – Growth Prospects – Reflects projected job, income and gross state product growth as well as business openings/closings and venture capital investments.

Rank 25th – Quality of Life – Index of schools, health, crime, cost of living and poverty rates.

It’s disappointing that Washington has a favorable environment for business and economic growth, and yet we rank 25th (right in the middle) for basic education and quality of life.

What does this say about our priorities.

WSMom – My guess would be that the cost of living here is what is pushing Washington down the “Quality of Life” list.

Before we moved here a year ago, we researched cost of living compared to Arizona (where we moved from) and there was a huge difference. It’s very expensive to live here, in our opinion. Of course, we would never live anywhere else.

But we are in the bottom three for human services and needs for the needy. There’s money available to get the help they need, but there’s corruption and people in higher government who don’t give a damm about the less fortunate.
