austinMemberThis place is surely interesting
It’s kinda weird, kind of a cross between a hostel and a duded up campground, but they have some quite decent trails and a killer bonfire pit. There was an unexpectedly international group of folks there who came out when the fire got going, which provided a good deal of friendly conversation. It’s a decent place to camp particularly to use as a sort of home-base for playing around on the island for a weekend. They also have a large rentable barn-structure with a kitchen, couches and stuff and a lot of sleeping space upstairs.. The time I visited there was a group having a family reunion in the barn and they made us eat their food and drink their beer. Probably one of my more bizarre “camping” experiences, I don’t know that I’ll ever go back but I’m glad I went.

JiggersMemberLincoln Park. Actually you’re not supposed to, but I have a sweeet undetected spot with a small tent and all right now.

MagpieParticipantMy family loves Salmon La Sac. There are lots of spots out in the woods up near there. Unfortunately, there are also new subdivisions popping up all around the area, in Roslyn, especially. There is not only the Salmon La Sac campground, but many off road spots on the river that are quite isolated. Not too far from civilization and visits to Liberty, Cle Elum and the Brick.

cruiserMemberHouse,
We went to Dash point a couple of weeks ago, really nice. Who’d have thought camping in Federal way could be so much fun:)

AnonymousInactiveBack when I thought camping was a good idea, we always liked Orcas Island in the San Juans. Multiple choices of public campgrounds and it doesn’t get more beautiful.

JimmyGMemberBecause we camp primarily at DNR campgrounds, in moderately “primitive” spots (as in bring your own water, pit toilets only, no other amenities) I don’t know if some of our favorites are what you’re looking for.
Closest to here is “Hamma Hamma” campground over on the other side of Hood Canal.
Then there’s Teanaway Ridge in Kittitas County.
Or “Mora” CG in the Olympic National Park (more developed).
“Saddle” CG in the Gifford Pinchot Nat’l Forest. Still closed by snow right now.

pamMemberManchester State Park is great. You take the Southworth ferry and it’s north a bit. Great view, beach, hiking. We haven’t camped there for a number of years but just went to visit there last Sunday.

FranciParticipantHow about Ohanapecosh Park in Rainier National Park system. I’ve not camped there, but I’ve been through there on day trips/hikes on the mountain. Great place!

thriftwaygirlParticipantGrowing up in Port Orchard I have explored all over the place on that side of the pond and there are some extremely beautiful and off the beaten path places in Shelton and Belfair (take Fauntleroy Ferry and about an hour drive).
Can’t remember the names right now, but I’ll do some Google-ing and get back!

rs261Memberits a long ways from here…but Cape Disappointment State Park is amazing. You can camp right on the ocean or in one of the numerous other camp sites inside the park. Theres a lake, the ocean, lighthouse, a Maya Lin installation, an interpretive center, and so much more. I highly recommend it for an extended weekend of camping fishing, crabbing.
I also would love to know about other Ocean/Sound camping favorites of people

westwoodMemberThere are too many to mention, but here is a quick survey of a few favorites:
North–Deception Pass SP, Bayview SP, all of the Whidbey Island state parks, Lynden KOA, Birch Bay SP, Moran SP and Doe Bay on Orcas Island.
West–Scenic Beach SP near Seabeck is great and only 23 miles plus a ferry ride–$4.00 gas each way! Fay Bainbridge SP is also close by, but not as nice. There is also good camping at Penrose Point SP on the Key Peninsula.
Olympics–going counter-clockwise from the elbow of Hood Canal–Dosewallips SP, Hamma Hamma, Fort Flagler, Fort Worden, Dungeness Spit, Salt Creek, Hobuck Beach, Lake Ozette, Hoh, Mora, Kalaloch.
South–any campground in Mt. Rainier, Millersylvania just south of Olympia, American Spirit RV in Westport, state parks in Westport, Skamakowa Vista Park,
East–any camp on Icicle Creek near Leavenworth, Lake Wenatchee, Lincoln Rock, Wenatchee Confluence, Riverside in Spokane, Hood Park in the Tri-Cities.
These are just a few favorites in Washington. As you can tell we like state parks or national forest camps. Now if you want to talk about Oregon and BC the list would be much longer. Happy Trails!

angelescrestParticipantOur three favs from Westwood’s list:
1. Moran State Park on Orcas Island
2. Lake Ozette–That hike/walk on planks out to the Pacific Ocean…
3. Dungeness Spit: immaculate campground; another beach walk for miles on the Spit…
