oh, good grief…Baby Charlie? Seriously? Poor child, sad for the family. How much medical experiments did you want that baby to go through?

Sorry…attention was diverted there. Back to EBT cards. I am 70, have paid taxes all my life…so yes, I have contributed to my government, and I am not receiving a gift because I get help back in the form of an EBT card, so I can eat healthier. There are many restrictions on what you can and cannot buy with it. JoB is right. You can’t buy pre-made hot food from the deli. You can’t buy a sandwich from the deli that they make while you wait. You CAN buy the makings for that sandwich…bread, deli meat, deli cheese, and make it yourself. You can’t buy alcohol, or TP, or kleenex, or soap, or shampoo, or personal items for a younger woman…yeah, no tampax. No trash bags, no cleaning solutions for your household cleaning. Pet food? Nope, as far as I know. A nice treat of prepared chinese food from Safeway? Nope…no fried chicken, or jojos . Yes, you can buy a candy bar, if you wish. Or ice cream, if it’s in your budget. And why not? I can buy a roast, if they are on sale, or a steak, if I wish. I periodically buy a piece of salmon for myself, when on sale. It’s good for me. One state wanted to restrict seafood. One wanted to restrict potatoes. Image that. Why? I have no damned idea. Yes, I can buy coffee and tea. No I can’t buy that potato salad behind the glass at the deli, that others think nothing of buying. But..lets throw some more regulations and restrictions in there. You’re poor, so you should suffer a little, and let those who have more (our well paid congress critters, for instance_), make it even more difficult to have a bit of respect. Damn! Guess we’d better know our place, huh !

Considering that you use an EBT JanS and I only know people that do I defer to your knowledge regarding what can or can’t be purchased. Let me be clear I’m not against them in principle. My point is that there is a lot of abuse and not enough oversight. I wish those running the program listened to people like you.

I think you missed my point about the child in England. It’s not about “How much medical experiments did you want that baby to go through?” or what the doctors or healthcare bureaucrats think. It’s that the parents were not allowed to decide what was best for their son. I believe for a nefarious reason. Yes we all pay taxes in some form, even the homeless. I think it’s better for society to appreciate that when we receive from the government (especially when it’s more than what we paid for in taxes) the loss of autonomy is the price paid.

BTW, I did go to the encampment and the gentleman wasn’t “home”. Without detail what I found made me more sympathetic to him. I wish I could have spoken to him. I’ll try again sometime.

Camping in our city parks is illegal and not ok, duh, come on, they dont even let the boy scouts spend the night in Whisky Woods. Get them out of there, yuck, I cant camp there why should anyone else?

I didn’t think I’d be commenting more on this. There is no “them”, it’s one man. The last time I spoke with the church in White Center they had 5 empty beds for him to choose from plus freshly cooked meals on site. This is where I wanted to take him. JoB on August 8th you wrote “I didn’t say that the campers should be allowed to stay”. Which is it? Stop imagining camping there and contaminating the salmon stream is the only option.

is the shelter a 24 hour shelter?
is there secure storage for belongings?

    because here’s the reality..
unless a shelter is a 24 hour shelter it is nearly impossible for anyone to work a job and comply with the shelter hours…

i am not in favor of campers in the woods
but i am in favor of any housing alternatives that allow the homeless the opportunity to break the cycle of homelessness…

if we don’t want people living in our woods we will have to provide alternatives…

I think everyone that got kicked out of Lincoln Park recently went to Fauntleroy.
