For Labor Day weekend, I went from Seattle->Boise->Craters of the Moon->West Yellowstone route. I hadn’t ever driven on I-84 or through the TriCities area before so it was a lot of fun. If you are into geology, I’d at least stop by Craters of the Moon outside of Arco, Idaho, or if you are into nuclear energy history, there are a few places outside of Arco as well.

Overall I-84 okay drive, not a whole lot to do. A friend mentioned to me that for an adventure to go on the John Day Highway as it’s full of twist and turns.

Jim, as drives go it is not exactly the most picturesque or stimulating. There is one cool overlook in Pendleton, Oregon:

Just beyond that, Baker City is a somewhat interesting little town to stop in for a meal or to stretch your legs:

After that it is a lot of rolling hills and then farmland…grazing cattle and potato farms:

If you don’t want to do the whole drive in one day, I find that there are some good basic hotels close to the Interstate in either Boise or Twin Falls:

Closer to Jackson Hole, there are some really pretty farms in Idaho’s Swan Valley:

The last part of the drive, as you cross over from Idaho to Wyoming, the roads are really twisty and mountainous.

I highly recommend Hotel Terra in Jackson Hole. It’s a really great hotel. And you can often get a good deal in the off season:

Have fun! The Tetons are stunning.

When you’re in the corner of Oregon, I recall going up a plateau and then coming across a vista and I captured this:

Other than that, I have the rest of mine located here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/colbyp/collections/72157624895271052/
