WSBKeymasterIf you see a pet in danger, hotline to Seattle Animal Shelter:
(206) 386-PETS
Info on what else they handle:

HMC RichParticipantEven if they have a license, dogs shouldn’t be allowed to drive either. :) Oh sorry, I agree with Hammerhead and the others.

JoBParticipantPets in distress should be reported to the Seattle Animal Shelter.
If they are in distress from heat, their tongues will be hanging out and they will be panting.
I mention this because i once returned to my car in Minnesota to find a woman phoning the authorities about my pets who had been left in the car while i stopped at the grocery.
she did apologize when i opened the car door and invited both wet dogs to say hello to her.. they hadn’t been in the car long enough to dry out from their swim.
It’s not a good idea to jump to conclusions without checking further…
There are plenty of options for those of us who want to take our pets with us this summer. In the junction there is a lower level parking area under the safeway store that is perfect for those who want to take their pets and keep them in the shade… it’s not free.. but it’s safe… we used it this weekend.

beachdrivegirlParticipantAfter the home page article last week about the dog being stolen from the man’s car i would not recommend even leaving your dogs in the car for a minute. that last story was a happy ending but we can only have soo many. Keep your dogs safe & healthy!
Also, thank you hammerhead for the reminder! we would have thought the theft would have been enough….

vincentMemberSo for the record WSB opinions on dogs are the following:
no dogs off leash in parks
dog parks are bad
no dog poop in trash cans
dogs in cars are in distress and need rescue
no dogs in bars
no dogs pooping on grass strips
April 6, 2009 at 6:29 pm #663457
austinMemberOr the opposite of those things, depending on your opinion. Mileage may vary.

KBearParticipantNo dogs off leash in parks, except dog parks.
Dog parks are good. Some dog park users are bad.
Poop in trash cans is better than poop on sidewalks or lawns. Pick your battles, folks.
Dogs in parked cars for short periods on cool days only.
Dogs in bars!
No dogs in Husky Deli.
No kids pooping on grass strips at Ercolini Park.

alki_2008ParticipantI see it more like this:
— no dogs off leash in parks — Unless it’s an off-leash park
— dog parks are bad — As long as it’s not in a sensitive habitat area
— no dog poop in trash cans — Unless it’s the dog owner’s trash can
— dogs in cars are in distress and need rescue — Depends on the temp/conditions
— no dogs in bars — ???
— no dogs pooping on grass strips — As long as the grass is not on someone else’s private property

JoBParticipantThere is one good thing about having a rescue dog who is not people friendly…
i don’t think anyone is going to try to steal my car or either of my dogs as long as he is in the car:)
if they open the door my little cujo is unlikely to try to leave the car.. and i doubt they would get that far…he gets a little vocal when anyone approaches the car… and not in a friendly way.

littlebrowndogParticipantWe modified our dogs/car behavior this past fall once we got a puppy. Two of our dogs are service dogs, but our puppy is not. We had thought we could leave him alone in the car, but he is uber-cute and sweet as can be and I became nervous about his safety as soon as we got him. He now is as big as an adult but still a very handsome dog and with the friendly personality of a lab or golden retriever. So now he stays home with a peanut butter-filled Kong or else one of us stays in the car (with the windows wide open in warm weather) with him and whichever service dog belongs to that person. It has changed our lifestyle a bit, but having a dog always does. I would be devastated to return to our car and find him missing. And of course now that the weather is warm we can’t leave him anyway even if we were not worried about theft.

Lucile 2Member@ alki_2008. YES!
Just out of curiosity, since I am not a property owner, is the grass strip between the sidewalk and street public property? Didn’t a home owner get really upset when the city tried to plant a tree in one last year? I’m confused…
April 7, 2009 at 4:38 pm #663463
WSBKeymasterIt’s usually city right-of-way BUT it is the adjacent property owner’s responsibility to maintain.

gambaruParticipantI think the rule of thumb for calling Animal Control about a dog in a car is 65 degrees… just an FYI.

mrhinehMemberAnd:
*assume all owners of dogs in cars are in the closest bar.
*be sure to smile when the local paparazzi posts the dog in car picture in the local rag.
*be upset when the nice man doesn’t say hello to your child http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/localnews/2009000368_webkidnap07m.html

Lucile 2MemberMaybe the above post is an argument for leashing your kids. Or only having 2, one for each hand. My mom made us wear those dumb wrist straps with “leashes” in public because my brothers would run into traffic (autism). It worked until they figured out how to take them off.
Sad story, child left in car 7 hours while mom was at work. http://www.nwcn.com/statenews/washington/stories/NW_040609WAB-baby-dead-in-car-TP.acbd51c7.html
Leave nothing in the car. Even some yoga mats can deteriorate in the direct sun!
