kootchmanMemberBut I said it before … Obama is doing a measured approach with Iran. But that’s what happens. When POTUS gets his first security briefing… Gitmo stayed open, rendition fell off the radar screen, enhance interrogations got Bin Laden… and his whiz bang drones were programs started under Dubya. I am thinking if a community organizer can be brought to heel by the JCS, CIA, State Department, et al… a former governor who commanded a state National Guard, yes they do.. had four years of executive experience, and years of international travel, as an adult… I think he can handle the job.. he certainly will catch on faster. Economics… the measure of a global superpower. That’s what RR did.. he broke the Soviet Union… and liberated millions.

NFiorentiniMember“…cannot transit super tankers… they are too big. The Suez canal was designed to transport British cargo ships to India.”
Here’s copy pasta AND a working link…
“Capacity & Operation of the canal
The capacity of Suez Canal is that it can entertain upto 1,50,000 tonnes of displacement. It permits ships upto 16 m draft to transit through. The maximum size of the vessel which can make a safe transit through the canal is called Suezmax. The limiting factor for the ship’s size is the draft of the ship alone, and the lenght & beam are made irrelevant because of the absence of the locks and lock chambers. The air draft of the ship is restricted because of the Suez Canal bridge. The Supertankers, in order to avoid a round-trip via Cape of Good Hope,(Africa), discharge a part of their cargo, to the terminals, or “tranship” to smaller vessels, which enlightens the chances of the Supertankers to pass through the Suez canal. After crossing the canal, these ships again load the cargo and then start their sea voyage. As this becomes a main constrain, The Suez Canal authorities, have planned to dredge the canal up to 22 metres, which enable vessels bigger than Suezmax to be engaged in the convoy.
Dimensions of the SuezMax vessel:
deadweight: 150000 tonnes.
width(beam): 46 metres.
air draft: 68 metres”

Please tell us the story of how Ronald the Great singlehandedly brought down the Berlin Wall, broke the Soviet Union and libertated the masses. I can hardly wait to hear you tell it.

miwsParticipantYou sound downright cranky this evening, kootch!
Upset because your buddies at Fox News have a reader poll that has been showing that Obama won?
Quoth Fox News:
Who Won the Final Presidential Debate?
President Barack Obama 59.31%
Governor Mitt Romney 40.69%

JoBParticipant365stairs..
when Obama acted professionally he was labeled milk toast…
what he learned from the first debate was that America didn’t want him to be so polite…
what he didn’t learn from the second debate was that America wants to know more than why Romney is wrong.. they also want to know why he is right.
we are letting one side of this political discourse control the conversation .. again.
The politicians aren’t going to change the sideshow.. it’s getting ratings.
we will have to do that ourselves if we want political discourse that contains content.
October 24, 2012 at 2:36 pm #774979
JoBParticipantDBP..
You would think that we would have learned from the two term President who was geographically challenged that this is not a good thing in a President. Details like borders matter.
Has misspeaking become the new nomenclature for “he doesn’t know what the h… he is talking about”?
I liked NFiorentini’s quote from Isaac Asimov better…
even if it doesn’t make us all warm and fuzzy inside.
the notion that one person’s opinion based on ignorance is as valid as an informed opinion has been carried way too far.

365StairsParticipantWonder if we can get DBP’s Uncle from Texas to weigh in with his pearls before the election?
Why? One, I need the laugh. Two, outside input can be helpful sometimes..

dobroParticipant“Benghazi… Wag the Dog…”
Funny, Mittsy didn’t have anything to say about it at the “foriegn policy” debate. He was too busy agreeing with the POTUS.
October 24, 2012 at 5:06 pm #774983
DBPMemberRomney’s hardly an anti-intellectual, though he will certainly be picking up a few votes from that quarter. Obama is counting on his share of the stoopid bloc, too. Trust me on this.
If you get a call saying President Obama wants to help pay your utility bills, don’t believe it. —Unless you’re stoopid.

Clinton! Now there was a wonk for ya. That didn’t keep him from making a few really bad calls, though, did it? I’ve known a few so-called intellectuals in my own time and lemme tell ya, I would NOT trust any of them to run the country.
I’ll take horse sense over book smarts any day.

JoBParticipantDBP..
it doesn’t take an intellectual to pass middle school geography.
don’t you think knowing your world ought to be a per-requisite to ruling it?
October 24, 2012 at 5:20 pm #774985
365StairsParticipantJoB – sure you are just trying to make a point…but last I checked…the President isn’t a ruler…and certainly lacks any such world power.
It was an oops moment at best…he flubbed a talking point that he was trained on.
It has happened to every candidate.
That said…I would hope he knows the difference between North and South Dakota (not much except where Mt. Rushmore is concerned)…and which one is Alabama down south (it gets confusing). He already knows you can see Russia from Alaska…he has a friend up there…
October 24, 2012 at 5:56 pm #774986
dobroParticipant“he flubbed a talking point that he was trained on.”
Not really. He has said that same thing at least 4 other times in the past couple of months.

JoBParticipant365stairs
i understand the position of president and whether we like our imperialistic nature or not our president too often does more than lead on the world stage….. lets just say he carries a mighty big stick.
but…if you want to substitute leads in your literal interpretation of the world .. be my guest .
when he makes snap decisions about someplace halfway around the world that will eventually affect me i want him to know exactly where and what he is deciding.. not just take someone elses word for it because it sounds ok to him .
Been there done that don’t want to pay for it again.
October 24, 2012 at 11:44 pm #774988
365StairsParticipantAh…JoB…I know you understand…likely better than most…certainly me.
I can read into statements as good as anyone…and rarely take anything as gospel here.
My only hope is for whomever continues on or is newly elected…they focus their “mighty big stick” homeward…where it counts.
DBP – since you like Bill Clinton so much…you must refrain from any comment towards phrase used in quotes above….

oddrealityParticipantHow is it possible for anyone to be undecided at this point in the election cycle? These two men are polar opposites..Either you agree with one or you do not..
October 25, 2012 at 1:13 am #774990
365StairsParticipantWell oddreality… Judging by this last foreign affairs debate. They ain’t that far off. Indus like me have some of each party’s blood in our veins. Tough to please I guess. It was reluctant in 2008 for me. It is tougher now. My vote counts for beans but its my vote. Best part about this country. Perhaps I want something that neither has. Common sense.
October 25, 2012 at 1:29 am #774991
kootchmanMemberI suspect that in foreign relations, there is a certain consistancy that transfers from president to president. I don’t blame Obama for not closing Gitmo… a silly statement from a community organizer. I imagine his first CIA/FBI/DoD briefing was sobering. There are sometimes, bad choices and worse choices. Iran is one of them. If this President can get us out of this quagmire with an embargo.. great! The stress on the Iranian economy is crushing… but, we are talking with people who share none of our values and are not likely to RSVP like a western European country… Obama tried to be super statesman and was Isreal hostile for his first two years… he “evolved”…. when the Jewish vote started going south. With some modifications, most presidents carry the same international trajectory… RR built on Carter, Ford, Nixon, Kennedy, et al. What he threw into the equation was an up armored US military and was a direct challenge to the Soviets ability to pay for a continued arms build up. They couldn’t do it. Not with the economy they had. We use it too damn frequently… though. I am headed towards the traditional isolationist roots of the republican party. Putin shrugged… he says he can work with Romney. He recognizes “campaign speak”:…
October 25, 2012 at 2:04 am #774992
JoBParticipantkootch..
the problem is that either Romney’s comments leading up to the last debate or his performance in the last debate was campaign speak..
and who is to know which version is true?
what scares me is that i don’t think he knows any more than Bush Jr did… he thought Cheney knew :(
i want someone who knows what the issues are, exactly where they are located and what the implications of all actions are.. before he asks his foreign policy team for advice…
it’s so much easier to make a decision when you are already up to speed on the issues.
October 25, 2012 at 2:21 am #774993
oddrealityParticipantThe reason they looked the same in the last debate ,365Stairs , is because Romney has no plan and no experience or expertise in foreign policy, indeed he has no idea about geography so sidled up to Obama’s ideas. Obama has a plan. Romney is going with whichever way the wind blows. Pick for crying out loud. I do not care WHO you pick it really is not that hard.Just pick They are complete opposites.
I wish to goodness we would quit caring and catering to how the “undecideds” will vote. They are mucking up the entire process with each candidate trying to cater to them.If they cannot make up their minds after all the info that is out there then maybe neither candidate would do it for them…vote for an alternate but for crying out loud make a freakin’ choice.
Maybe next time I’ll be undecided so someone will pay attention to how I will vote.No ones cares about the rest of us that do pay attention and decide based on issues that matter to us. Do the undecided have no issues?? I do not get it. I’ve voted since 1972 and always been passionate about my vote.
Sorry but I am passionate about this..
October 25, 2012 at 3:29 am #774994
365StairsParticipantOf course you care who I pick. If I pick our president again I am your forum pal for a thread and we have something in common. If I pick mitt I will get a wtf from you and you will judge me.
I just can’t take that kind of pressure! ;(. Kidding….
The lesser of two evils …
October 25, 2012 at 3:48 am #774995
oddrealityParticipantActually,365Stairs, I have couple of friends/family members that picked Mitt and I have not said one word..saving that for when the country goes into the tank thanks to his irresponsible policies..heh..Sorry but I am just tired of the whole system being geared twords people that can’t seem to make up their minds…really..just pick one. I honestly do not care which one you pick..our votes in Washington hardly count anyway.
You will always be my forum pal..don’t worry ..even Kootch is…LOL If I picked friends on how they voted I wouldn’t have many friends..I honestly rarely know how anyone votes.I don’t ask just like I am not asking you how you vote only that you pick who to vote for. That is all.Vote for the one YOU like the best, not the one anyone else likes ..even me …darn it all!!! LOL Just pick then VOTE!
